What's your HECS debt and what's your degree?

Master of Industrial and Organisational Psychology
Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours)
Bachelor of Arts - Psychology

Most recent indexation brings it to a lovely total of $93,746. I try not to think about it.

Flying. The management guys would only have around 30k surely :P

        • Zing!

        • who are you flying for? Did the degree help out much?

Ex BBJ captain here but often get asked for advice whether to do degree or not.

  • B.Eng/B.Comm (double major - meaning more subjects —> higher debt)

racked up ~50k HECS at the time of graduation, and somehow only paid off $10k after working for 4.5 years..
despite the indexation is low, it still adds quite abit to it over time, once again prove the power of compounding.

  • Undergrad - Business (Marketing) - 26k
    Postgrad - MBA (completing end 2018) - 80k. $30k paid so far.

Paid off the undergrad already. MBA will take much longer.

    • Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) - $0 (Parents paid upfront to make use of 25% discount. Yes I am very lucky and extremely grateful)
    • Masters in Engineering - $0 (100% sponsored by my company)
    • MOOC MBA - $0 (Pursuing MBA-like education via MOOCs. Surprisingly good - if you take the time to apply and want to learn. Subject certificates (when available) covered by company).
    • Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) - $0 (Parents paid upfront to make use of 25% discount. Yes I am very lucky and extremely grateful)

      Damn!

      • Probably even if they didn't pay for it then, his birthright would pay for it 100 times over at least, probably some Saudi prince. Meanwhile my parents tell me not to use their good coffee when I come over to visit :/

  • MBBS (4 years 2007-2010) + ? 3rd year of Bachelor of Science only for me was approximately 32K at end of my degree.

Was on the old HECS thing. It was way cheaper doing medicine back in those days.

  • At the end of this semester - $91k

    Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical)
    Master of Accounting

I felt queasy thinking about how much I was spending for the second degree but I feel the improved lifestyle (staying near my home city) of accounting offsets the huge cost of the masters and less interesting work vs engineering.

Thankfully I'm about done and will start work next year on a decent salary, finally!

    • +2

Curious, what kind of accounting job are you going into (professional services or industry?), and what's your salary like?

I ask because I did my first bachelor degree in commerce, went into accounting and absolutely hated the work and the salary was arse.

      • I understand where you're coming from - the internships I did at the Big 4 were painfully boring and the pay is terrible. It's only a stepping stone onto a decent industry job for most I believe.

I've actually opted into the state public sector grad program in a role that sounds like management accounting for the most part. Starting salary is $70k but I may keep applying for industry grad positions in case this doesn't go too well (bit dubious about how the public sector is run).

Did you end up swapping away from accounting then?

        • Oh wow, definitely surprised that state govt has a 70k starting salary, that's fantastic
I ended up in a mid-tier accounting firm doing audit, the salary was 50k with super (so 45k base). I kept telling myself that I was in it for the experience but at the end of the day the salary was pretty demotivating to me, not to mention that audit is the biggest snoozefest

I quit that after 4 months and now I'm back at uni studying computer science and enjoying it a lot more :)

        • @portard:

Yeah, I was surprised it was that high too!

Glad you're onto something you enjoy more, it can be difficult haven't to start over from scratch. That sounds about right, I could've lived with the low salary (Big 4 base was 50k) if the audit work was more tolerable. It would've been a real struggle to do that day in day out.

  • Was told by my parents that it was university or the highway when I finished year 12, and that they were willing to pay for half my HECS if I chose the former.
Now have a Bachelor of Management and Bachelor of Business Administration. Still owe around $10k.

  • Bachelor of Electronic and Communication Engineering (finished in 2012) $34K
PhD (Electrical & Electronic Engineering) (Government fee waiver)

  • Did a Bachelor of Computing from 1998 - 2003 (was a 3 year degree that took me 4.5 years to do… I was a dumb kid at the time).

Not sure how much I racked up for this degree on HECS as I then went overseas and came back and studied law from 2007-2009 and then a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice.

I think when I started paying my HECS back, my balance was approx 65-70k. I started paying back HECS in 2012.

I believe my law degree was $24k (24 x $1000 per course) and my graduate diploma in legal practice cost me about $15k for the 6 month course.

    Have 49k left to pay.

too scared to check. been at uni for 10 years full and part time mixed up with a fair few fails and repeats at different unis.

  • Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education. Debt was about $20K from memory. Paid it off years ago.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Systems/Networking; $45k

  • Bachelor of Commerce, HECS was around 24k finishing in '08. Took 7 years to pay off working as an Auditor/Accountant.

    Bachelor software eng - $35k~

  • +1

I'm in the process of completing a Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching). Last time with the ATO my debt was sitting at $27,000 excluding the fees for this semester and 1 final theory unit after that.
Maybe the ATO system will get a bug and wipe off all out debts :). Just kidding.

  • $180k — Medicine

    $60k degree
$120k bond to be paid back after specialising lest i want to live and work for 6 years regionally/rurally (I don't)

At least I'm not one of the poor sods who are about to pay $256,000 for a degree at the new and ridiculously poorly thought out Macquarie Uni med school

    • +4

At least I'm not one of the poor sods who are about to pay $256,000 for a degree at the new and ridiculously poorly thought out Macquarie Uni med school

It's version 2 of Bond Uni and is geared towards the rich. Macq uni fees are normally reasonable for postgrad but this is just a cash grab. They've stooped so low.

Students who apply for med should be accepted based on academic merit and life experience, not whoever has the fattest wallet.

      • Sounds like the University system in America lol

  • Double degree. Accounting / IT - total doubt around $35k

  • Bachelor of Actuarial Studies. About $25k in 2010, now all gone!

  • +1

not a single post about utas… I was hoping someone made good with a Fitbit and zero debt.

    • See my post above. I went to UTAS.

  • My Bachelor of Commerce cost me $12k HECS from memory and that included repeating some subjects. The cost of these degrees have really increased. Madness.

Was it a good investment? Probably. Would I do it again if I could turn back time? Probably not.

  • B Law
    B Eco
    Masters Law

0 debt( first course was around 24k which I paid that off and work paid for the last 2 degrees.)

  • +1

BE/BCOM from Unimelb, supposed to be 5 year degree but thanks to Vanilla world of warcraft took 6 years.

Ended up with around 50k HECs debt, graduating in 2008.

All paid off a few years ago.

  • +1

    -Cert IV nursing
    they paid me to learn

    -Bachelor of Nursing
paid up front to save 20% off fees

-Post graduate certificate in critical care nursing
    HECS debt $8k

paid it all off the year after, as it appeared to have an interest rate slugged on top and I refuse to owe money to anyone except the mortage/bank

  • If anyone is doing a Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Science at griffith university.. close to 150k hecs for the 5 year degree lol

  • Bachelor of Computer Science around 26k.

  • Double Degree Engineering (Mechanical) and Business (Economics) with Diploma in Engineering Practice

Total damage: around $48k. Business subjects more expensive than engineering subjects. Either that is subsidies or teaching quality

  • Around 50k.
Bachelor of Engineering Honors in Robotics and Mechatronics…
Not working directly in field, doing building automation.

  • Nice OP. Mine is somewhere in the $90k as well. B.Eng(hons) 2010 and an MBA 2016. I saw mine as a long term investment.

As a comment to the general discussion, a degree should not be seen as a lever to salary wealth. Wealth and success is earned not given. Degrees are tools to help you understand the basic nature of the industry you are going into to, the rest is up to you!

  • +1

    $49k -ish .

Started in Business/IT, then dropped out half way, then changed to Education(secondary), dropped out half way, went back to finish Business(HRM).

Am now doing something completely unrelated. Good times.

  • Bachelor of Medical Science - 35k debt.

  • +1

bachelor of IT. mine is around 40K. that because i took multiple summer classes to finsih early and those classes do not have the cheaper commonwealth supported place so it's full fee

  • Bachelor of Trolling.

    35 dank memes and pepes.

  • +1

Bachelor of Civil Engineering (hons) and $0 HECS debt. I saved up in my part time job, lived away from home with no help, and paid the uni fees upfront every semester.

  • +2

B.Eng (Mechanical) - $0 HECS Debt. I worked my arse off while at uni doing 2-4 shifts per week in hospitality to pay off all my uni fees upfront and get the 20% off discount.

  • Bsc psychology, $20,400 in total

    • Which uni?

      • Macq

  • Approx 55k
    Bachelor medicine/bachelor surgery
    Bachelor of medical science

Just started a masters in surgery, which costs approx 6k per year for 3 years. So be 70k all up

  • Bachelor of Science (Honours)
    Doctor of Philosophy

The Bachelors cost me about $16k (I think) but was years ago.
Worked for a couple of years before going back for the Ph.D.
I cleared my HECS debt about 15 years ago.
    The Ph.D was free.

No debt other than a couple of mortgages.
No contracts, no plans, no worries :)

  • Cert III in Information Technology. $573.50

  • If you added up all the fees Australians paid to become personal trainers, would the figure exceed the national HECS/HELP debt?

    • At personal trainers get to look hot doing what they do.

  • Bachelor of Media Studies
    Master of Teaching

    Roughly $40k debt

  • $110k

2 Year B. Medicine (dropped out) [Griffith University]
4 Year B. Commerce (Majors Finance / Property Development) [Griffith University]
    2 Year MBA [AGSM]

    • Isn't the MBA 80k alone?

      • Yep, 78 to be specific.

It was about 5 years between undergrad and post grad, so i had paid off some of my undergrad degree. So some of it had already been paid off! I think i was at about 45k at the end of my 6 years of undergrad

  • +1

I believe around $30k now that I've been working for almost two years.

Bachelor degree in information systems, Masters degree in Computer Science. Currently working as a security consultant on $93,000

  • graduated close to 12 years ago, was about 17k or 22k in total,.. ended up paying it off 6 years ago or so, comp sci degree.

was recently thinking of doing another degree, looked at it and it said $34,000 and i thought that was too expensive, then i realized it awas per year rather htan the full thing, so no thanks cant imagine how people are being saddled with 100k debt.

also comped to the average wage its about 1:1 back when i did mine, it was closer to like 1:2 so was much better value. the prices have gone up alot but not our wages, so yeah think very strongly about higher (priced) education.

    • 34k per year, at which uni and what degree?

      • Adelaide uni. Can't rember the exact degree. Was checking out double degrees and masters. Lost inter st after the $$$ shock.

  • Just checked:

    Balance: $180,980.30 DR

Science degree and Veterinary Science degree

  • went to a private uni and have a debt of $76k in hers for a business management degree with a major in events.

i wish i had someone in my life tell me not to go to that uni. wasn't worth the money i now owe.

  • 37k, two undergraduate degrees, Bachelor of Science, and a Bachelor of Behavioural Science. No regrets, there's a lot of stupidity in this world and if 37k makes me even slightly less stupid then I'll be better for it. I didn't even have a high school education before the degrees, so I saw it as once and for all making up for that as well. Well some regrets, I wish I studied law or something where you get paid to read and write reports, something that feels a bit more vocational and can lead to some kind of job if you are dedicated, instead of just the straight science I did.

  • Where are all the BA graduates? Afraid of being called "would you like that with fries?"? Bachelor of Arts student here. :)

  • i have a degree and 0 hecs debt.

  • Set to finish B.Eng (Civil) with honours next year. Will roughly be $36K.
