nüvi 2789LMT features Garmin traffic to help you spend more time on the move. With Garmin traffic, your driving map remains onscreen at all times. Traffic alerts appear to the side of your map and messages are spoken, too. Garmin traffic can give details about the situation, such as how many minutes of delay to expect and if there are any possible detours. It can even confirm whether or not you are on the fastest route. Lifetime traffic² entitles your nüvi 2789LMT to receive free traffic information for its useful life, with no ads and no subscription fees. Garmin traffic is delivered straight to your nüvi – no smartphone needed.

Find Exactly Where You Need to Go
The Direct Access feature simplifies navigating to select complex destinations, like airports and shopping malls, by finding a place within a larger location. When navigating to the mall, Direct Access gives additional location information for specific retail stores inside. For example, "Arriving at Woodfield Mall. Anthropologie is inside, on the upper level." Direct Access even navigates through parking lots to find the entrance nearest your destination.

Easily Navigate Complex Interchanges
Active Lane Guidance with voice prompts prepares you to drive through an exit or interchange with confidence. As you approach, an animated model uses brightly colored arrows to indicate the proper lane needed for your route; a friendly voice offers additional help. Bird’s Eye junction view offers a detailed view of interchanges, looking down as if from overhead. photoReal Junction View realistically displays junctions and interchanges along your route, including the surrounding landscape. Brightly colored arrows indicate the proper lane to drive. nüvi 2789LMT also depicts real road signs as they appear along your route.

  • Are these GPO unit any good? The reason I am asking is that a relative has asked me to look into a new replacement GPS.

    • +3

My experience with Garmin is theyre easy to use. 7" is definitely big too

I'm sure people will chime in about using phone with GPS, but sometimes it's just nicer/easier to have a standalone GPS on the windscreen for longer trips

      • +2

I can understand having a "separate" GPS unit but with the price of phones these days, I'd imagine getting an additional phone (or even a cheap Chinese Android 7" tablet) as your separate GPS unit would make more sense?

        • I don't think this relative will be using the phone functionality - they are more looking at the lifetime map updates as they have had a bad experience with their current GPS (which come to think about it I think is a Garmin as well - possibly once bitten twice shy.

        • +7

Phones seem to heat up and freeze/act up with alot more due to the heat from sitting on the car dashboard.

Turning on location services, constantly having the sun on your phone also kills battery life.

GPS units are the better option for GPS usage.

        • +1

or even a cheap Chinese Android 7" tablet

Certainly wouldn't want one of those sitting on the dash on a Summer's day.

        • @DavidBrookes:

Yea I can totally get it especially for an older relative. I'd imagine they'd find a dedicated GPS unit easier to use.

          @bao28:

Turning on location services, constantly having the sun on your phone also kills battery life.

Yes but with a GPS unit you'd also have it constantly plugged in, so you could do the same with a phone.

Wait - does being exposed to sun actually take more battery life??

          @Spackbace:

Certainly wouldn't want one of those sitting on the dash on a Summer's day.

Call me paranoid but I wouldn't generally leave a GPS mounted either

        • @illumination:

I wouldn't worry too much about heat if our experience is anything to go by. We have 3 Nuvi 310s and a European model Nuvi 360. All are between 6/10 years old and apart from a crackly speaker in one unit they all still work fine.

3 of the 4 are semi-permanently mounted on top of the dashboards and get full sun all day and there's never been a problem. They power up with the ignition so are basically worked hard… Oh, and the batteries still hold charge for at least several minutes.

        • @freddofrog42: Oh I'm thinking more from a safety point of view. I don't like leaving stuff of more than a few tens of dollars of value visible in the car..

hmmmmmmmm what should I do with a dashcam then lol

        • @illumination: i agree that standalone GPS has its uses. I personally just use my mi max and chuck it in the storage bin beneath my stereo in the car - the screen is hidden away but volume full blast and works very well.

        • @illumination: he meant the heat from the sun reduces battery life. Just like how fast chargers hurt batteries due to more heat generated

Great for p-platers who need a GPS unit (considering that mobile devices are banned now, even using it for navigation only)

  • Already use Garmin 65 but have grabbed this one,

these have bluetooth to connect to smartphone for stuff

    https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/111441

    PS code is generic :}

  • I've got this one, it's got a glass screen which can get a bit reflective, but its heaps easier to use for touch/pinch to zoom. great price for it also.

  • Wouldn't something for a similar price, like this current model be better?

It's listed as 6.95", but surely that 0.05" is not that important ;-)

    • +2

Smaller screen, and $279, plus you need the traffic receiver cable for traffic if you don't want to bluetooth your phone and use its data. Has some nice integrated features though that the older model does not offer.

IMO after having used Garmin GPS and other brands in the past, for car, handheld and aviation tasks, Garmin is pretty hard to beat.

      Go for it!

      • Yeah I bought two Garmins today… This one for my 4x4 and a DriveSmart 50LMT for my FoG Wagon with the 20% off code from Ryda!!

Both were a deliberate choice as the older models retain the antenna in the cable and "apparently" are more receptive to 3rd party speed camera updates etc.

With you re map choice. It's Garmin all the way.

      • So this advertised model 2789LMT is the older model that doesn't need bluetooth to the phone?

      • @PCAviator
        Smaller screen, and $279

Click on the first link, or the box next to 5" on the second link, and it's virtually the same screen size, hence my comment about it only being 0.05" less ;-)

It's also on sale for $249 in the first link, and could possibly even be found cheaper than the JB offer in the main post, since it's RRP is lower.

I take your point about requiring an extra cable, or the phone, for traffic data - I hadn't considered that…

  • If I were to purchase it in store, would I just present the code to the staff at the counter?

    • +2

If you PM me your email, I can forward the email with the barcode, so you can scan it instore.

      • Went into JB today and the staff member discouraged me from buying it, saying that the size would obstruct the view and that there were unnecessary features that I was paying for…. And the reason for the sale is because no one wanted to buy it… thoughts?

        • Personally, I use use my phone as a GPS, so don't really have any input for a Standalone GPS.

I only posted the deal, as I received the email, and 50% off seem cheap. As for input for the device, you might have better luck messaging other user in this post.

      • Can you email me a copy with the barcode

        • +1

          Sent you an email.
