50% off Philips LED Downlights (MR16 or GU10, Cool or Warm White): 1pk $5, 4pk $17.50 @ Woolworths

80

Full credit to savas for his post on this week's specials at Woolworths.

In addition to the "Philips LED 1400 Lumen Cool Daylight bulb" listed in the post/catalogue, I noticed in store that the Philips LED downlights were also on sale for half price. This includes the Mr16 and GU10 lights, with single lights for $5 and a pack of 4 for $17.50. Both warm and cool versions are available.

Mr16 single
Mr16 4-pack

GU10 single
GU10 4-pack

I'm not sure when the deal finishes but I presume it is part of this week's catalogue. I think these are pretty good value at 50% off.

  • for anyone want to buy, 430lm is not bright enough.

These are usually used in an array, they are fine.

I'd be more concerned about the beam angle than the lumens, doesn't seem to mention it.

I think they were 60 degrees, which for many application isn't good.

I know I went looking for some with more than 60 degrees and they were either really expensive or a brand I would prefer to avoid.

  • Looks like its not just down light either, a few other standard fitting globes on half price.

  • Has anyone seen a little plastic socket or similar to put on a broom handle to remove/insert these on a high ceiling?

I will have to use a pool pole though.

    • Isn't it always safest to replace these using a ladder? A lot of the cords from the transformers aren't that long.

      • These halogen/LED are in a fixture screwed into the ceiling.

Some of these are 5m up with no wall to lean a ladder against, so a ladder definitely isn't the safest way to change them.

    • You mean like this: https://goo.gl/44mUQU

You can do a search on Googly or eBay for "light bulb changer" or "light bulb changer extension pole" or similar.

      • Thanks, that search did find some others, but I couldn't see any there to suit Mr16 and GU10 lights.

        • I think as long as the suction cup diameter is smaller than the globe it will work fine, as long as it can stick.

Don't think they actually make them to suit a particular globe.

    • It's a 2-handed operation to change MR16/GU10 globes. Don't think you can use those light bulb changer poles.

      • In this case the globe are exposed in a fixture mounted to the ceiling. They are not in a recessed fixture.

  • We purchased some to replace out Halogens and there is a bit of Glare from these LEDs. Don't want to have to place a dimmer in each room.

  • I find the Osram bulbs that Woolworths sell to be better, with nicer and wider light.

    • They are a bit more expensive buddy. What is the beam angle of the Osram? :(

      • Can't remember, but the Osram do go on sale as well from time to time

  • I got a few of these. Thanks OP :)

  • These are garbage and priced appropriately

    • I don't know much about LEDs so I'm curious as to why you think this. Also, what would you recommend as a good alternative?

430 lumens is very low and a 60 degree spread is quite narrow. This makes for a dim narrow beam and you would have to use more of them closer together to get enough coverage at benchtop. They would struggle to hit the floor with much force.

Try SAL Sunny Lighting, Domus, Melec brands. 10w+, 700lm+. Beam angle will depend on coverage and if you are replacing halogens or doing a new install. Also ceiling height. The higher the ceiling, the less beam angle you need.

I use 13w for kitchen and 12-10w dimmable for living areas, bedrooms. 2.7m ceilings with 90-100 degree beam angle.

    • Didn't realise beam angle would make such a big difference. Thanks for the detailed advice! Much appreciated.

  • 400lm at 60d angle and 2.5m ceiling are good enough to cover 4m2 area.
My studio are approx 20m2 with broken white colour and tbh they are quite bright when I run 4 of this bulbs.

Kitchen or any utility area might need brighter bulbs or you can stack more.
My kitchen approx 32m2 currently runs 16 of these bulbs and it is like a kitchen display showroom!
