        • @katz: That's good then; so RockMeLoOn's comment is wrong?

Guys does kogan/DS provide an invoice with GST listed?

    • +1

I highly doubt GST is paid on these imports.

    • +1

I guess not as these items are shipped from overseas… but $361 is really a good price for the iPad 2017 though.

    Nice try Kogan!!!

      Apple iPhone 6

They would say that nothing really has changes since iPhone 6 :D

  • Too bad no 8 Plus 256GB but netherless good price.

    • +2

if it was the 8+, it would be over $1k AUD, which would trigger GST due to the threshold…

  • Do u have to pay import tax on these?

    • generally speaking, if sub $1k AUD, then "no".

  • -1

Does the MacBook sold by DickSmith have Australian warranty?

  • +2

good price for the brand new phone but I would rather spend bit extra to get 2 years local warranty. My phone last at least 4 years so I think its worth buying in AU

Since it's from HK, are we'll be slapped with GST by custom for iPhone 8 256Gb even though DS/Kogan is Australia retailer?

    • So only this model under $1000

      • +1

If I buy iPhone 8 256gb for example, is the invoice from DS will showing $999.20 (after discount) or before discount price which will attract GST since it's above$1k?

  • can I claim this for salary sacrifice?

    • +1

no GST so no i reckon

  • Now we talking…

  • Guys is 64GB enough and is Plus too big or should one go for standard 8 with 256GB?

    • Plus is too big for me, couldn't use with one hand and very easy to drop. I dropped mine few months ago and ended with cracked screen.

Regret buying 5.5".. should have just go for 4.7" or even considering going back to SE 4"

    • I don't know but I found the black iPhone 6 plus too big. It is definitely easier to handle a white one.

  • GST May be Applied

anything under $999AUD cannot have GST applied

      • 999 is after discount. the full price may show up on the invoice.

        • Exactly what I'm concerned about… 🤔

        • @widzz: If they try to charge you GST on it, I would just show them what you paid for it. Hopefully that should work. Back in the old days before the $1,000 threshold was implemented, I had a package declared incorrectly and they wanted to charge duties and GST on it. I showed them a copy of my paypal transaction, and they cleared it without imposing any duties and GST.

        • they dont have time for that, they charged you pay

        • To clarity regarding import tax this is from DS via message

'When you purchase from Dick Smith, you will not be required to pay additional taxes and duties.

Your delivery will come with an invoice that reflects the amount you have paid. If you have applied the eBay discount code at the checkout, your order will fall below the GST threshold and you will not be required to pay any additional duties or fees.'

      • So above that we can claim GST?

        • No, need to pay 10% GST on top of sale price.

Is it confirmed now that iPhone comes with international warranty as under apple warranty terms, they still have this disclaimers.

"IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR iPHONE, iPAD AND APPLE TV SERVICE.

Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device."

    • iPhones, iPads and Apple TVs have never had international warranty officially and probably never will.

      • Thanks. That's what I thought but seen post about people mentioning about international warranty and also DSE auction having written "To view Apple’s International Warranty Details, click here." where there's no link to the details. A bit misleading.

  • Pretty good discount for the 8 considering it's not even released yet! Maybe their pre-orders are down on expected due to IphoneX popularity?

  • Z0mg come with band 28, so worth!!! All serious good deal, pair with the cheap Kogan sim plan and you easily have a cheap iPhone 8 Plan!

  • Dick Smith & Kogan would be loving the cash in their interest account right now….

  • +1

I would probably grab the last iPhone 7 deal posted here for $729 for a 128gb. The difference between phones is basically just wireless charging.

I would also wonder how accurate that delivery date is. A Kogan phone I ordered a while ago was delayed by months.

  • Just wondering if the Customs will charge GST on this phone? The value of the phone is >$1,000 if based on pre-coupon price.

  • Genuine question, not trolling. Can someone please explain to me the benefit of spending $1000 on a phone? I only browse the web, send sms/mms, take photos and make phone calls. Do I really need to spend this much or will a cheap phone do?

    • Try the Honor 9, One Plus 5, Xiaomi Mi 6, or even the Huawei P10. The first 3 are mid range priced phones with near top of the line specs. (Not completely top of the line, but close). They should be around $400-500.

The Apple price isn't too bad when you compare it to other top of the line androids like the Samsung S8. I think the biggest issue with buying an Apple iPhone is getting the feeling you're locked in to buying another iPhone when you need to upgrade.

An iPhone 8 for 20% off ($860) would be a no brainer in any other year except now there's an iPhone 8 Plus and an iPhone X.

  • wow! This is an excellent deal! Bough the iPhone 8 Plus 64gb for $985 + Cashback.

I was waiting for the iPhone X which I am sure wont ever get discounted like this any time soon. The 8 Plus was $600 cheaper than what I was planning to pay for the X which seriously is a excellent deal!

    • +1

Looks good on paper but then not so much when you start thinking of potentially ~$120 GST to Customs and loss of local warranty and possibility of months of delay.

        • So I wont get taxed right, if my phone is under $1000?

        • @2her0ck: Nah you won't. This is why they don't list the 256GB model i reckon cause they'll be over $1000.

        • Bloody awesome! Thanks for checking mate!

        • @2her0ck:

I believe there is a risk of paying GST. Invoiced amount will be the full amount not after 20% off price. Iphone 8 plus listing price is $1200 something so over $1000.

        • @dingdong3000:

Nonsense. with that logic DSE/Kogan would never sell anything (cameras, macbooks etc) above $1000.

        • @Sharp: I was saying specifically for that model. Of course they'll have things over $1000.

        • @Sharp: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/267204#comment-4026561

^ This should be in OP regarding import tax.

        • @dingdong3000: From memory, Customs don't want proof they just send you the bill to pay to clear the item. I don't know what the process is if you want to challenge the bill.

    • Has your cashback tracked yet?

      • No, I have not received a confirmation of my cashback being tracked. Maybe it is taking a while.

        • For me Ebay normally takes about 2 days.

        • @dingdong3000: Yeah I will wait to receive the confirmation. I feel so tempted to cancel this order and buy from shopmonk instead.

        • @2her0ck: I won't be surprised if DS ship these around the same time as Shopmonk. They were also early with their estimated delivery last year with the iPhone 7 when they had this sale too.

        • @dingdong3000: I guess I should just stick with DS then.

        • @2her0ck: Yay my Cashrewards has tracked! Expected cashback is $15.35 meaning total cost for iPhone 8 Plus 64GB is $967.05 or there abouts

        • @dingdong3000: Same! Got a email confirmation as well. Very cheap price to pay.

  • Expected delivery between Nov 2 to 23!!! That's a long wait.. lol

  • Seriously considering the base model 64gb iPhone 8.

Have been a long time android user.

Any difference between this iPhone 8 vs the cheaper iPhone 7.

I presume the camera is slightly better. Would never bother using wireless charging.

    • -1

      iPhone 8
      True Tone screen
      A11 CPU

I would definitely get the iPhone 8 as its only $150ish more over the model that is already one year old. However the iPhone 8 only has 2gb Ram which I personally think is getting on a bit considering the 6s also has 2gb ram too. The 8 Plus has a dual lens camera plus 3gb ram.

      • What??? That is stupid.. why can't they just use 3GB ram in both models? :S

        • +2

          Hit different price points.

          The iPhone 8 is US$699
          iPhone 8 Plus is US$850
          iPhone X is US$999

At first the iPhone 8 is a great deal, then you decide you want a better camera, better screen, more storage. Before you know it you've bought the top of the line iPhone X 256gb for $1800 and spent $800 more than you thought you were going to spend. Think of all the other things you could have got with $800.

As an aside - the best Apple deal right now is the $469 ($360 at Dick Smith Kogan now) Apple iPad, unless you need the pencil and keyboard, this version of the iPad does just about everything and should last a couple more years. I feel like everything else is not really worth the extra "Apple Tax".

        • @arbok: As you may know, iPhone X has Samsung OLED screen. I guess the screen is much more expensive than Samsung screen. It requires much more manufacturing cost than normal Samsung OLED.
So, if someone needs the screen repairs, it may cost more than $400. OLED screen price usually never drop unlike normal other iphone LCD screen. If someone wants to buy iPhone X, insurance will be mandatory.

        • Yep it will be really expensive to fix! I don't think many people will factor that into their cost though. :)

Still even a regular iPhone LCD is not cheap to fix.

        • +1

@arbok: Due to 3D touch, iPhone X OLED requires more cost to manufacture, so the screen repair cost by Apple store would be double for normal LCD screen. Some suppliers said it will be similar to Samsung S7 Edge screen repair cost. Many people bought S7 Edge but there are too many S7 Edge with cracked screen in eBay and Gumtree becuase the repair cost is too hgh. When they purchased it, they didn't consider it. After they smashed, they find it is crazy. I don't like OLED. No one solved burn in problem. According to Apple Store, iPhone 8 screen repair cost is same as iPhone 7. I saw iphone 8 screen and it is almost same as iPhone 7 screen.

  • Nevermind got it sorted.

  • +1

    Delivery timeframe is concerning.

Sometimes time is more valuable than money. Even for Ozbargainers. Right?

  • thinking of getting the new ipad pro 12.9. does anyone own one and have any feedback on it

  • Didn't read through comments, but did they list all the HK stock at RRP AU prices?

    • They listed a dollar cheaper than AU RRP lol

  • +1

so how does the warranty work? on the apple site it says its one year global warranty but the comments here are making me confused

    • Its 1 year international warranty. You wont be eligible for Au consumer warranty through which normally starts after your warranty expires ;)

    • on the apple site it says its one year global warranty but the comments here are making me confused

No, the Apple site says iPhones do not have an international warranty. But if you're lucky, the Apple store will fix it for you anyway.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/330266#comment-5086463

Here are some people on WP talking about it.

      • Oh, i was looking to get one of the ipads haha

  • +2

iPhone HK model has different model number. iPhone 6 HK had same model number as Australian model. So, warranty might be possible in Australia.
But, since iPhone 7, HK model has different model number. Apple usually refuses any warranty for different model number.
So, any warranty for iPhone 8/X may be not apply in Austrtalia. Diffent model number means that it has different technical specification.
My friend who from America had iphone 5 american model before. He visited Sydney and his phone was broken. He went to Sydney Apple Store.
Apple store said they can't help because it has different model number.

    • +1

      thanks for sharing

    • +2

You are correct about the difference in model numbers for HK iPhone 6 & iPhone 7. I just had a check and according to this page, it appears that Apple has changed it again and Hong Kong iPhone 8/8 Plus bear the same model number as Australian stock. So they should accept warranty service for HK iPhone 8 & 8 Plus in Australia.

    • Bought my Dad an iPhone 7 plus here in Sydney last year and gave it to my Dd as a present. He lives in California, he took the phone at an Apple Store 3 weeks ago for warranty service, no issue whatsoever.

  • so cheap, and it's not always need to wait that long, maybe earlier

    • +1

Initially at first I thought the 256GB was a good price, but after factoring in a chance of being hit with GST on import, no 2 year Australia warranty and possible chance you also won't get the Apple 1 year international warranty, it doesn't look like a good buy anymore.

The 64GB versions is definitely not worth it if you are travelling and able to claim the GST back.

If you can wait, probably better to wait for eBay code to use on local stock iPhone 8 once it comes out.

  • +15

I tabulate the listing for iPhone 8/8 Plus for easy comparison and navigation. Enjoy!

Model Storage Colour RRP Discounted Price Discount
    iPhone 8 64GB Space Grey Gold Silver $1,079 $862.40 20.07%
    iPhone 8 256GB Space Grey Gold Silver $1,329 $999.20 24.82%
    iPhone 8 Plus 64GB Space Grey Gold Silver $1,229 $982.40 20.07%
    • thank you sir!

    • Seem's like the Space Grey Plus 64GB is most popular out the lot

      • $400k in sales for that phone alone!

  • Did they use the wrong photo for the 8 Plus? Looks like an 8 (no dual camera?)
