Comprehensive Car Insurance for Inexperienced Drivers

Okay so long story short:

I'm 21. Have not had full license for longer than 2 years. Recently purchased a 2010 FG XR6.

I'm looking for a reasonably priced Comprehensive car insurer and would like people opinions.
I know I'll be paying extra because of my age, car and "inexperienced" licence, but would love some opinions on reasonably priced car insurance as every quote I've seen so far is $1200-$1500 P.A. Which is WAY out of my budget.

In b4 sell car or put in parents name.

Cheers :)

If you put it in your parents names, and have yourself as one of the nominated driver, it is still going to be in the similar premium bracket. If you are interested in AAMI, they discount your policy if you do their nominated 'Safe Driver Course'. It is free for existing members and their families. Although, must say AAMI could still work out very expensive.

  • Maybe try woolworths drive less pay less option if you don't drive much. Or try progressive car insurance, they're quite cheap.

  • Do you need to have comprehensive?

At your age comprehensive will always be pricey and you have to weigh up likelihood/cost of repairs if you crash your car.

My approach was to do a defensive driving course and buy a dashcam to reduce my chance of out of pocket expenses.

Inexperienced drivers are more likely to have an at-fault crash, hence the need for comprehensive insurance and hence the higher premiums.

Have you read the 'Help me…I don't have comprehensive insurance threads'?

      • haha I'm waiting for the no insurance on the $80,000 investment post

although most seemed to not have any insurance at all (Comprehensive or Third Party Property)

    • Well, I don't really plan on crashing my car but in the event that something happens, having comprehensive would save* my ass.

      *T&C Apply

definitely true. I was implying you could also look at Third Party but that won't fix your car, only the other driver's vehicle

you're doing better than a lot of Ozbargain members in knowing you need insurance!

  • The quotes your getting seem rather reasonable for comprehensive given your circumstance

what happens to your quote when you change it to "experienced" driver?

  • I pay $400 for my 2011 under my parents name with Coles

You're going to get screwed. Best option if you can is to insure it in your parents name until you hit 25.
This came from the aami girl when I was looking at insurance for my son, as it what she had done.

    • I did this, except kept it in my parents name until I hit 30 as they were still trying to rip me.

  • Honestly I switched to budget direct when I was 20-21 and even had a turbo'd car and was the cheapest quote by a fair bit. You can set your excess levels to higher or lower and your premiums then go higher or lower accordingly. Do a quote on their website usually only takes a couple minutes.

Have you tried adding yourself as the primary driver(and named policy holder) and adding an older man/woman as a named driver? this can take off a couple hundred dollars even if they don't drive.

  • Just went through this with our son. We ended up getting a policy in both his ans his mother's name. As she was on the policy (not merely as a listed driver) that brought the price way down. We also got it through a car dealer (believe it or not), the same Suncorp policy that was around $1200 online came out to about $750 (with roadside assist).

  • Mistake buy a sports model and expecting insurance to be reasonably priced. Should have bought a cheap/plain/boring car to own for a few years while you build up a no claim record.

Still, shop around. I found budget direct to be the cheapest last year, for a mature driver with a good record though.

    • Budget direct wont insure my car for any persons under the age of 30 :/

      • That's why they're cheap I guess.
