  • Will give it a go. Thanks op.

Looks like a No-name Chinese Grinder.
But still a good price if you value the grinder at $10.

  • +28

Nice looking deal but I refuse to buy from companies who place fake reviews on their website.
Look at the 109 reviews for killer coffee. Every one is grammatically correct.
You have to pay a pretty sum for such quality reviews.

    • +5

I think I saw 1 legit review. There's no bad reviews either.. You'd expect at least 1 or 2.

    • +12

Hmm, for the hell of it, I checked the first page of reviews and almost every single post has grammatical errors. Commas in place of full stops, inappropriate use of capitals and missing words, to name a few. Back to grammar school for you, my friend.

To me, the fact it's 5-star reviews all around is a better sign that the reviews might be suspect.

      • Most of Australia doesn't know grammar (or how to spell for that matter) but it doesn't help that most books, magazines and newspapers use incorrect grammar as well.

        • +1

Waiting on free udemy course/ebook on grammar

        • +1

          @SilentReckoning:

I'll pass it on after grammpar's finished it.

        • lol why the downvote? The list of 109 reviews just proves I'm right

        • +4

@mit: I suspect you might have been downvoted for "Most of Australia doesn't know grammar". It wasn't me.

        • "Most of Australia doesn't know grammar" case in point

    • +3

Yes… some of those reviews sound like customer testimonials from a bad, late night infomercial.

    • +8

Good pick up Birdyzone. Looks a bit dodgy indeed.

      I like this quote…

I had anticipated a bitterness to the coffee once drawn but colour me surprised when that expectation did come true.

    • I'm a little suspicious of the OP on this post too. "This coffee is fantastic" doesn't sound genuine to me. A good way to turn away potential buyers really.
      You can't polish a turd!

      • +3

Actually, there was an episode on Myth Busters where they did polish a turd.

    • +1

"As a miner I have to have my whits about me all the time and with another cuppa under my belt I was like superman crossed with a meercat on speed. Dirt was flying left right and centre, tones were being shifted and the machines hadn't even started. "

      Impeccable spelling and grammar indeed…

  • High caffeine but what about the taste?

    • +1

Tastes pretty good. I use the Nespresso pods and I often compare it to the Nespresso brand Dharkan or Kazaar pods, in terms of strength and flavour, but with none of the associated bitterness.

I also bought their Aeropress kit and the manual grinder is… a lot of work. It's like 10 minutes of solid grinding to get one coffee.

Edit: also I highly doubt their "5 times the caffeine" claims cajbheb substantiated.

      • +1

It's like 10 minutes of solid grinding to get one coffee.

Are you doing it wrong? It only takes about 45 seconds with a porlex or a cera hand grinder.

        • Yeah, may need to adjust the grind to be a bit coarser.. depends on your extraction of course
Takes me around 60 seconds of solid turning to grind my double shot through my Porlex Mini each morning.

        • Even on a fine espresso grind on the porlex it probably only adds about 10 seconds of grind time.

      • +2

        cajbheb

        covfefe

      • Comparing it to…. pods?

        Thats not a comparison.

        • Why? His taste buds are just as subjective as yours.

      • Nespresso pods caffeine content doesn't actually vary that much, the taste is more the bean and even more likely how much it's been baked

    • Probably slightly better than International Roast!

  • Does this code work with their aerepress deal?

    • +1

Yep, brings it to $49inc shipping which makes it a pretty good deal (depending on how much coffee you actually get as I can't actually see that.)

      • +2

I have confirmed previously it is only the 200gm unfortunately, otherwise would have been all over it

        • +1

Nothing special with only that amount of coffee then. The original deal is pretty good if you need a hand grinder, but I already have one.

  • +13

Pro tip: if you take the handle off the hand grinder and attach a power drill, you now have an electric grinder.

    • Looks like I am packing my drill for camping now, it actually takes quite a while to grind by hand.

      • School holidays, better keep the kids busy…. ozb tip: Electric grinder only $13 from Kmart http://www.kmart.com.au/product/coffee-grinder/128170

        • At home, my coffee machine does it for me, when camping, I don't have 240v. Conical Burr grinders are said to be a better style of grinder over the blade style, how much difference it makes to the end product however, I don't know.

        • +4

When I worked at Kmart, those little coffee grinders were one of the most shoplifted items - because you can use them for chopping small quantities of 'other products'.

        • +1

Those are not 'coffee grinders', they are spice grinders. The cheaper hand grinders would do a better job.

        • @mrderrickc:

Isnt the deal posted also a bladed spice grinder?

        • @tryagain:

Blade is for general spice grinding, fairly poor for coffee. Flat burr grinders are the next step up and then conical just a notch above due to consistency of grind. Both pretty easy to find but probably a minimum of $100. Commercial conical cost more than there flat counterparts.

        • @mrderrickc: Well, it mention on the page "Coffee grinder"… Although, you can always use that on different purpose, like the drill on hand grinder… IMO might be easier to get a cheap grinder and leave the tip to the Pro.

        • +1

@abuch47: Yes, I was replying to @dlovep comment about the kmart grinder.

        • @dlovep: Yeah although it says that it isn't really ideal as @abuch47 has mentioned. Those blade grinders is just like a blender, it doesn't give any consistency required for coffee.

        • +1

          @abuch47:

He who controls the spice controls the universe…

      • I take my Porlex grinder and Aeropress camping. I enjoy doing it manually. It's part of the lure of camping for me - roughing it a bit, doing things a bit old school and not having every mod con known to man available at your fingertips. To each their own.

        • Almost exactly the same except I use my Vesubio as I like my coffee white. I enjoy "crafting" a coffee as opposed to my auto machine just making one. Grinding just for me isn't too bad, its when I am making for a few others it gets laborious, maybe I should just make them grind their own if they want one.

        • @tryagain:

Yeah, that's true. Our kids seem to love doing it so always have plenty of volunteers. I think it's perfectly reasonable to make people work for their coffee when camping so your suggestion of each grinding their own is on the money.

        • +4

It's part of the lure of camping for me - roughing it a bit

International roast instant coffee is roughing it. Hand grinder and pressed/drip coffee sounds more like glamping :p

        • +1

          @Gandalf the Thrifty:

Ha ha! Yeah, fair call. Ya gotta have your standards.

      • Plus the drill can be used for doing tent pegs

    • I thought i was really clever and did this. F* the threads on the spindle, had to chase them with a die.

      • Mine has a hex head on the spindle, so it works fine for me. I've put a few kilo through my grinder with a drill.

  • +1

Thank you, went with the free mug instead of the grinder.

    • Same here. With the two bag and the free cup, it came to about $22 after discount.

  • Nice, ordered great deal just for the coffee let alone the perfect camping coffee making companion.

    great work!

    • +1

If you drink enough coffee there's far better deals to be had,
      http://www.baybeans.com.au/ozbargain

      • Nice deal indeed, probably too much coffee for me to handle a month I might get a bit Jittery

  • Ah, i just got this deal delivered! Im going to use it in my cold brew setup!

    • What setup do you use?

      • Simplest setup I can (because I have no 240v). 3 scoops (30ml ones) to 750ml water and let it rest for at least 12 hours (optimally around 2 days).

For me it's about getting the drug in my system so I cut a lot of corners. Any cold brew hipsters want to weigh in?

        • I do about the same, in a French press. Haven't tried for more than 16 hours. I love it. Been looking around at other methods too, all fairly similar concepts.

        • @simmy: I think because your not boiling it, the water plays a part. Don't drink it unrefrigerated after like 3-4 days though, it start to sprout life.

        • @simmy:

yeah, I use a french press too.

      • I make mine a bit more potent, fill up a passata jar 1/4 with coarse ground coffee, top with filtered water and put lid on with as little head space as possible. Steep for 12-24 hours then strain through a sieve then through a moist paper towel rolled and forced into the neck of my Bodum pebo. I can't stand any sediment. It's still been good after about a week in the fridge and I mix that half/half with milk

    • I can't imagine hand grinding for cold brew. Would take a long time?

      • Takes me forever with a Hario Burr Grinder unless I have it on the wrong setting. I do use the Kmart one every now and then

        • +1

takes me less than 2 mins to grind 1 shot with my Hario grinder..

      • I'll go pick up my package and report back

        • With the included grinder it takes maximum 5 minutes

      • I hand grind for cold brew! It is a pita and does take a long time…I usually just sit in front of the TV and grind while I'm watching something.

        • +1

I used to use expensive coffee for cold brew, but then found out even cheap coffee tastes pretty good. I get pre ground from costco and it turns out great.

        • +1

@shamowfski: aldi coffee works a treat for cold brewing

  • +1

Have had a nutrininja for two years it grinds coffee pretty decently and get coles coffee beans for $10 a bag, this isn't exactly value for money but each to their own

    • I can't imagine that tasting any good?

      • Not worse than using $13 Kmart grinder for sure.

      • I had a friend rave about the medium-dark roast coles coffee that's $12, it's fairtrade as well so thought I'd give it a try and bought a kilo. Its the most bitter coffee I have ever tasted, some of the beans are actually black. I hate waste but two cups in I pulled the pin, maybe I just got a bad batch but it was unbelievably bitter.

        • Stale coffee (Month or older after roast) does not compare to fresh beans (5-20 days)

        • +1

@abuch47: I know, the thing that got me across the line to buy them was I could tell by their use by date that they were actually fresh, don't often find that at the supermarket.

        • @tryagain:

thanks might give it a go when I get through this kilo

      • If you cold brew the beans they actually come out nicely. Though cold brewing is forgiving on bad quality beans.

        • Yeah cold brewing could work, it doesn't grab all the bitterness from the beans. But I can't imagine a good grind consistency with a nurininja. You'll probably get half powder and half coarse.

        • @nereus: I don't overfill the cup, I process it in the smoothie cups with the smaller blades. Yeah you must have good a badly batch that sucks. I use a moka pot to brew my coffee

        • @nereus:
I don't find it makes to much of a difference, I strain the final result so I'm left with something fairly clear. If I grind it too fine it does make the end result darker but I think a proper grinder might be my next purchase :)

        • I'd recommend getting a consistent grind size, as in all the one size particle. It sounds finicky, but the results speak for themselves.

  • +3

I'll stick to the Aldi coffee for $12/kg. :D

    • any good ?

      • I don't remember it being awful! The worst coffee I've ever had is in a white and red packet, very cheap and on special lots, it just always comes out weak and the bean form isn't much better. Still was better than instant though

        • worst coffee I had was Woolworths own brand ground coffee beans.. was very undrinkable..

      • Its good value thats for sure. I tried it but thought it lacked a bit of punch.

      • +1

darkage - certainly not the best by any means but they seem to be fairly fresh and I can get an acceptable crema out of them. I use the medium roast. They are called Lazzio.

      • i'm usually a big advocate for aldi, but I just can't do their coffee. the 'Lazzio' is better than coles and woolies home brand, but the aftertaste in your mouth hangs around longer than the hangover breath from the night before. may an extra 20 bucks and get something decent lol

  • +1

For me, the shipping cost kills the deal.

Tried to add multiple items in the cart, and the total delivery cost came up to be the sum of each individual item.

    • +1

The above deal is free shipping

  • Good timing. Needed another kg of coffee. Was hoping a sensory lab deal would come back as I love their coffees but this will do. Love trying something different.
Hand grinder going straight into the camping kit. Use a percolator on a hotplate over the fire and usually grind some beans up at home before going and vacuum seal them. This will be good to just bring the beans.

    • +1

I think you mean glamping. :)

  • I find their coffee weak and bland. Needs to be 10 times stronger (in flavour) and certainly doesn't pack that caffeine hit that it promises.

    • …referring to their nespresso compatible pods. Have not tried the beans/ground yet.

  • +1

I've been using this coffee for some time, its actually great, its punchy/robust but not bitter. The beans are a little oily so not really suited to my Jura F9 but I just do a cleaning cycle after running 1kg through it and its happy days; I've had family/friends say its quite strong, I have a huge tolerance to caffeine though so don't really notice any effects from it.

Thanks OP, I will be ordering.
