Buffalo Ezy Stainless Steel Pot Small Rice Cooker (5 Cups) - $89.95 - Instore - BCA (Buffalo Cookware Australia?) Highpoint VIC

90

We decided to get a stainless steel pot rice cooker due to concerns with our current rice cookers flaking/scratched non-stick surface. There are only a few vendors in AU that do stainless steel pots.

Previous deal was $129 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/289329 .

The Highpoint Kiosk store (Level 2 - Near to Best & Less) has a 50% off sale (didn't take a picture unfortunately) on selected items including the Buffalo Ezy Stainless Steel Pot Small Rice Cooker (5 Cups) - the price I paid was 89.01; which isn't 50% off $129.95 but I wasn't in the mood to push for the $75 as I had been going in there to pick it up for $129 - still a 31% discount from what's online - copy of receipt: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/174123/52758/img_20171…

While the singer brand can be had for $69 + $15 shipping (https://singerco.com.au/product/5-cup-stainless-steel-rice-cooker/) I felt that it doesn't have the support (they directed me to Harris Scarfe, those of which I called indicated that they don't have the Singer product) network that the Buffalo brand does. Would have loved to get a Tatung but our cooking needs are simple (white and brown rice only) and I thus couldn't justify $240 on one to myself or, more importantly, my partner.

  • I love my Bufalo thermal magic pot. I also have the bufalo wok but never used it as I prefer teflon woks

Would recommend a well seasoned carbon steel wok over Teflon.

    • or diamond wok from woll

I have this one, purchased few months back and very happy with it.

    • Any advice on white or brown rice cooking beyond what in in the instruction guide?

I'd say it's best suited to jasmine (chinese) rice but we have also cooked medium grain (korean/japanese) in it. We used to have a cuckoo pressure rice cooker which is very popular in korea and admittedly the buffalo won't give you same result with medium grain as it's just a rice boiler.

We mostly cook jasmine though and I prefer to have a cooker with no coatings.

  • Wish they have it in sydney. Looking for this for a long time!

  • I've also been looking at buffalo, singer and tatung too! Thanks to your post, I grabbed one from highpoint. A big thanks to you.

    • No worries, glad to hear it helped you out! I've got some brown rice currently cooking away to see if 1 cup rice to 1.5 cup water works (used to with our old kambrook express rice cooker). Just out of interest what price did you pick it up for?

      • Eager to know how your brown rice goes. I paid $89.
The 50% discount was for the stainless steel pots/pans.

        • Brown rice worked out well. With the ratio of 1/1.5 it was more on the firm side and not gluggy at all. A bit more water perhaps as it was a about to catch/burn (could have been due to being left on warm on a relatively dry ration) but not too much more.

  • Just a word of caution for those researching on Buffalo - their refund policy is quite strict, and only defects are allowed for exchange/refunds. Extra care is required if you are thinking of buying it as a gift to someone else. I made a mistake purchasing extra after I got one for myself. I bought the extras as gifts for friends and family but I found out later that they already bought higher-end models from Buffalo. I'm left with these extra units with no way of returning them. The salesperson who had been bubbly and helpful at the time of sale, was not ready to entertain any returns/refunds in the name of "company's policy", which is printed on the payment receipt. To be fair, they accept exchanges for another product. I didn't need another product and will have to keep these till i find another way to get rid of them.

I like the quality of the stainless steel bowl. The cooking method is through direct heating of the bottom of the bowl like most other basic ricecooker. I presume this direct heating method cooks the rice in a shorter period of time (10-15 minutes), but it leaves a layer of slight burnt rice that gets stuck to the bottom, even if the power is switched off immediately the moment it jumps from cooking to keeping warm, and keeping the lid on for 10-20 minutes. (From memory, Tatung uses the steaming/double boiling method, which may reduce the chance of having burnt rice). With rice, merely soaking the dried layer with water for a short while solves the problem. The layer comes off easily with a sponge. Cooking porridge/congee was also possible, but it leaves a much thicker layer of burnt starch/porridge to the base making it harder to remove. A good 5-10 minutes scrub with a sponge usually gets the job done.

Overall, with this deal, it was one of the cheaper stainless steel rice cooker available. I would love to try the Tatung ones if it ever goes on sale. Do NOT ever buy Buffalo cookware as gifts as my experience tells me that you will not be able to return them for a refund, unless they are damaged, or unless you bought it full price from the Buffalo cookware website, which allows a 14-day change of mind refund, postage at your own cost).
