Great price! Cheapest on Aliexpress is $679 and BG is $664 USD, paired with the favourable exchange rate from GB, looks like a killer deal.

    • NFC - Yes!
I played this last month, pretty good overall. However, no dual camera for phone this price is the deal breaker for me.

      • dual camera?

        • +2

Common trend for smartphones this year (maybe a bit last year too?) is to have two cameras on the rear. Exactly what the second camera does varies a lot between phones and phone companies - it might be a zoomed in lens, a wide angle lens, a black and white lens to try and enhance detail in your shots… lots of things.

        • @Alzori: thanks. I didn't know what it was for.

      • Exactly! It also has the front camera positioned in the worst spot possible at the bottom! How strange, now everyone will think you have lazy eyes when you video call them.

No s pen, no dual camera, no external storage, low screen resolution. High risk of getting adware/Google play services issues built into the rom. Might as well get the Note 8.

        • I've gotta agree with camera position.. but s pen, kmon. What makes this phone a high risk of adware?

        • -1

@PR0r: Bought a redmi 3 prime for my wife, it came loaded with adware, took quite a while to figure out what I needed to disable, even malware bytes couldn't delete it. The biggest problem is that she is constantly getting the Google play requires authentication issue and there's no easy way to fix it. This makes it impossible to access any Google play service app and I also can't use Cerberus in it. This is a nightmare and really makes me never want to buy another xiaomi phone ever again no matter how good for value it seems let alone this one which is full of flaws. Not having access to Google play services apps is the biggest killer, you might as well not have a working android, it's crippled.

        • +1

@supersabroso: Xiaomi phones don't come with adware. You've made a mistake when purchasing the phone from a reseller who has modified the phone. It is quite a simple fix if your up for it.
It's as easy as: Download Stable Global ROM, follow Flashing Guide.
If you want a hand, send me a message.

    Here's the 64G model USD559.99

Posted for those looking for the 64G model.

Im still waiting on the damn Pixel 2 XL :(

        • +1

Sweet…I was having a look at one of those today, very nice looking phone ;)

        • @urbancartel:

Glad I waited out the Pixel 1 for the 2 thats for sure. And not having to wait for OS/Security updates, dealbreaker.

Just wish the process of buying it wasnt the same as being poked in the eye. Not to mention the extreme price yikes

  • +2

If only 6.3" or longer. Ups I meant bigger.

    • Yup, want it to be the same as Mi Max.

      • +1

As my current is 6" I won't upgrade to something smaller doesn't matter the phone can fly or what.

        • +1

I understand that. Smaller never feels like an upgrade to be, no matter what else is better.

          It's like buying a slower motorbike…

    • I prefer the opposite. I'd like a high-end phone with a 4.5" screen, so I can fit it in my pocket.

Samsung has cancelled the S7 mini and S8 mini, and the Sony Z5/Z3 Compact is getting a bit old.

      • depends. i use my phone 80% for musics, games and movies, so bigger is better

  • If I wasn’t locked into iOS I would seriously look into this one, saw a guy on the train using one, it was a thing of beauty

    • Locked or not locked?

    • -4

Speaking of which, I've never seen so many vids/articles trashing an Iphone e v e r . Amazing! Maybe u shld make the jump :)

Wonder how the heck the numnut u saw using a new Pixel so quick?!

      • +3

At ms, meaning I’m stuck in the Apple eco system…

X3, train comment was referring to the xiaomi phone posted here not the pixel, and I don’t think I’ve read a bad professional iPhone 8 review yet so not sure what your on about :p

        • -3

          Meh!

      • Where are these articles? I'm not a big fan of Apple but the iPhone 8 looks to be quite decent. A lot of people will probably go for iPhone x which will make demand for the iPhone 8 go down hopefully reducing prices.

It's processor is faster than the s8, it's got some nifty features and it is set to put iPhone back as the king of battery life

        • I just seem to come across what seems like a lot of articles in my Google feed saying how bad the sales are for the Ip8. Big bezels issue. Then theres the splitting issue. The most scathing ones are on youtube, I just never noticed it before. In any case, the Android v Apple debate is futile, didnt mean to go down that route.

        • I've seen a few comparison videos on YouTube where the s8 beats the iPhone 8 in battery life. Though those videos don't represent real life usage well and since then the iPhone 8 has recieved updates. The difference in performance is largely unnoticed for most people's use, because it comes down to the type of applications that you use.

At this stage most applications aren't that resource heavy for any flagship phone, and will even run more than fast enough even on a Snapdragon 625 mid tier phone. Popular Social media apps that most people use these devices for like Facebook aren't going to trouble any Android flagships phone. Unless you're a big mobile gamer or running niche applications that are resource heavy then the benefits of the faster processor are less noticeable.

Features are indeed important and there are features on Android phone you'll never find on iPhone. If you wanted features like the s pen, DeX, wide angle camera, better DAC, small bezels on a more affordable phone, expandable storage etc then Android will be your only option.

    • +1

How can someone be "locked" into IOS?

      • well not literally :p
but after years of buying apps and crap like accessories for my iphone, I can't bring myself to leave and just dump everything aside…I considered it though when apple released the BS prices on the iphone X…but that lasted for about 5 minutes lol

        • +19

So basically you are doing exactly what apple wants and stay spending insane amounts on everything apple.

          BREAK THE CYCLE!

I did type about how i could switch easily since google books, music and moves are all available on apple but then i remembered exactly why i hated apple, you can't access apple books etc on android.

Seriously if you cant break the cycle now you you are basically saying no matter if they released dog crap with a screen (aka iphone 7/8/X) that you would continue to buy it.

I do see how you feel i'd feel the same way if i left android and couldn't access my books music and movies on my new phone.

        • I know how you feel re: switching OS but - for me - when it came to getting something more contemporary (better specs) than my current iPhone 6s, the choice was easy. It was either shelling out a ridiculous amount of $$$ for phones with no headphone jack and ok specs or give Android another go with a phone that meets all my reqs ( oneplus 5). I went with the latter.

Yes, I will prob have to reinvest $30-40 for the apps i want to keep, but the choice was easy for me.

        • CAST IT INTO THE FIRE!

          DESTROY IT!

      • -3

If you have invested heavily into an ecosystem, it makes a lot of sense to stick with it. Over the years, you would have bought apps from the app store. It wouldn't be wise to jump on to another platform and be forced to pay for those apps again.

        • +9

Might be worth considering How much has been paid in total for all those apps vs. Any price difference being paid for a phone every 2/3yrs (?)

We get fooled by our frame of reference sometimes and feel reluctant to pay $5 for an app that we might get for free but then be ok paying $50 more for a phone to get it a month earlier. Sometimes worth remembering $1=$1

    • +1

I get it. The one thing people don't consider is that you just might not like Android. I know a hell of a lot of people love it to bits but everyone is different.

I have Android products (tablets, Android TV - MiBox3) and they just aren't delightful to use.

If you are happy with iOS there is a cost to switching that isn't monetary. The mental effort required to learn a new OS (I'm sure you can do it, but it isn't zero cost) as well as the risk of being disappointed with it. If you keep your phone for 2 years then that's 2 years of a daily driver that reminds you whenever you pull it out that you made the wrong decision.

There is also a consideration if you have other Apple products. Android phones and Macbooks can work ok. Airplay to AppleTV is only really good with Apple products. If you have an Apple Watch then that also goes out the window with any other phone.

And Airpods are the jam. Especially if you use them with iPhone and Macbook, switching between the devices is great.

Lots of thing to consider, not just price of Apps.

(And this goes the other way too, from Android to iOS)

      • My initial comment was just to say how nice this phone was, not to kick off a phone os debate :)

but yeah, i'm too far gone, its not just apps, its the apple accessories. sigh…i would miss my zeppelin air …

To tell you the truth, I had an android for work years ago for work, HATED it. But that was in the old froyo days, sure things are better now, but urgh the memories things not working.

Anyways, $1579 is too much for a phone, but the Samsung note 8 rrp is $1499 so it pretty bad from both camps. But yeah screw them, I'll just skip this cycle. Fingers crossed this isn't the new norm, but I said the same thing when phones flew past the $1K mark.

    • yeah man get out. the feeling out not locked ie freedom is priceless

  • Better than Samsung s8?

    • +2

That's a matter of preference. Some people like Samsung's software. Some people can't stand it. Some people find MIUI repulsive and prefer stock Android. Samsung Pay, iris scanning (if that appeals to you), water-resistance, expandable storage and a gorgeous hi-res display are a few of the things you don't get with Xiaomi's Mi Mix 2.
If Bixby (and its dedicated button), Samsung Knox, battery capacity and memory/onboard storage size bother you, the Mi Mix certainly wins.

      • Agreed. I had my mi max about 18 months ago. There are only 2 things I dislike the phone. No NFC in the phone and some apps do not recognize the operation system such as my blackberry UEM work mail system. I might consider Samsung next time as I use my phone a lot for my work.

    • +1

Almost definitely not. For the same price, which they are, I'd be going the S8 hands down. Better phone to start with and will actually have some amount of resale down the track… good luck selling an old Xiaomi.

    • +1

Better than two cans and a wire.

    • +1

Definitely a matter of personal preference. I genuinely strongly disliked my last two Samsung phones (s6 Edge and s7 Edge), though know people who really like them (including love my discarded s7 Edge). I feel similar about Samsung phones as many people feel about Apple phones, and if the choice ever came down to only Samsung and Apple, I'd probably switch OSs again. FYI, the phone I replaced the s7 Edge with is the Moto Z Force Droid (eBay, Verizon US exclusive), and I couldn't be happier. I'm hoping they fix the Z2 Force issues, so that more mods become viable.

      • I'm loving my s7e as its size is so handy and I like screen aspect ratio better than 2x1.

Recently got s8+ and it's very awkward to use, even I have large hands I still need 2 hands to operate the screen.

I might be loving s8, but I think it might not be that big of an upgrade over s7e.

If I wouldn't care the resale value later on I might choose Mix 2 over S8, but I have to say that the Samsung UI has improved a lot and it is very nice to use. I jumped the HTC ship after S3 but now I'm back :)

        • +3

Yep, it is definitely a matter of personal preference.

That is why I think the 'anti-iPhone' comments are somewhat annoying (as above, not in your comment datafellows).

People value different things in their phones, and one person's dream phone can be another's trash.

In regards to why I didn't like the s7 Edge (for those interested): it didn't have one handed mode despite earlier phones having it, the battery life was only ok (given that was one of the main selling points over non-edge variant), the Samsung UI at that time was annoying (though easily fixed with an app), "OK Google" rarely worked and the Samsung voice assistant was not great IMHO at the time, the wait times for OS updates were annoying, the push by Samsung to use their other services and apps rather than the Android standards and for their complimentary products to try and lock out other non-samsung Android devices was a pain, and that the screen was so brittle (mine shattered in a bag with some apricots/ peaches and an iPhone, with no damage to the fruit or iPhone).

I'm glad I stuck with Android, but am also very happy not to be using a Samsung phone any more.

Again, I have nothing but love for the replacement Android phone and it should last a number of years given the shatterproof screen and modular capacity (battery life is insane with mods, my phone now rarely dips below 90% even when I forget to charge it at night, and it doesn't drop below 100% when I do, even with a lot of phone gaming). I also think some of the other mods are great, and until getting a Nvidia Shield, the projector mod was how I usually streamed Netflix and similar content.

I can understand that to some people the mods and shatterproof screen are unnecessary, though I wouldn't trade my phone for the latest Samsung or iPhone, despite those phones having significantly higher price tags.

        • @tolchok:

Ok so obviously your comments are directed at me.

I'll start by saying I'm not 'anti' any particular brand of phone, I've had plenty, from nexus devices through to sony's, LG's, samsung's and even an iPhone (albeit work supplied).

My comment was just an honest evaluation of reality, for the same price, which both options (s8 and mi mix 2) are, you'd be hard pressed to find a reason to choose the Xiaomi over the samsung if you are looking for the "better" phone. Sure if you just 'want something different' or whatever then that's a completely different question and not one that can really be answered.

          Samsung pro's

          • Better screen (higher resolution, higher brightness)
          • Better camera
          • Better aftermarket support
          • Less "bugs" (I can almost guarantee it)
          • Better 3rd party support (local tv services/foxtel apps will actually work, same with better quality options from netflix youtube (HDR)
          • Better security features, from iris scanner through to not having to 'worry' about backdoors and shit that's been put in Xiaomi phones before. You'll see in most ozbargain threads with xiaomi phones about making sure you flash the generic rom before you use the phone to make sure no vendor roms have been installed.
          • Waterproof (IP68 vs none)
          • Better spec glass (S8 is gorilla glass 5 front and back, Xiaomi is gorilla glass 4)
          • Headphone jack
          • Better sports tracking, built in heart rate sensor etc.
          • Samsung pay
          • Better resale value

          Equal

          • Software, though personally I'd still give the edge to samsung here, I accept that's a personal choice. They are both heavily skinned and aren't known for having the quickest android version updates.

          • CPU both have pretty similar processing power and efficiency

          • Battery, both similar battery capacities, will be
interesting to see if the mi mix 2 can get the great battery life of the S8/S8+ though, S8+ people are regularly getting more than 6hrs SOT.

          • Flash memory, Both are using UFS 2.1 and available in different capacities with SD for extra storage.

          Xiaomi Pros

          • More ram, 6GB vs 4GB hopefully allowing for more applications to be open without reloading.

… Happy for you to add to the list?

As I said, I'm not trying to push Samsung's to everyone, I couldn't care less, purely just a honest opinion on the comparison between two phones of similar value.

        • +1

          @brad1601:
          Hello Brad,
Not actually aimed at you. The 'personal preference' was in relation to the initial question, with the ranty part in relation to the anti-iPhone comments further up annoying me, followed by me setting out what I haven't liked in my previous Samsung phones (which has influenced my preferences).

        • @brad1601: The Mi Mix 2, like its predecessor, doesn't support expandable storage. It appears all Xiaomi's flagship devices don't have mSD slots.

  • +3

I'm sorry but MIX2SEV mistaken as MIX2SEX is really bothering me.

  • +3

FYI there's NO headphone jack for those that care

    • -1

So does it have FM tuner and antennae? Lol iPhone 8 edition?

  • +1

Like the Ram and the 256GB storage. Just wondering how this compares to the one plus 5 I've been looking at. That has 8GB and 128GB Storage and same processor for A$699.

    • Only differences would be down to personal preference: storage, cost, warranty, delivery time, looks. Ram doesn't make much of a difference, it may in a few years time.

  • +1

Will wait for it to be $500 AUD. Another 6 months if at all I'm guessing…?

    • me toooooo

  • +4

    Hmm band 28…

    Has NFC to…

Not sure what to complain about now. Might need to rethink my life

    • +1

Rotten sods are now complaining it only has one rear camera ffs always something to complain about!

    • +1

      No headphone jack

  • Does this phone have an IR blaster?

    • +1

      No I don't believe so

      • Thanks. A lot of the Xiaomi phones have it, a pity they didn't include it in this one.

        • Yeah I have to agree there… It's in the Mi A1 that i've been looking at for $270, you'd think for this price it would be on this model too!

        • I am curious what people actually use the IR blaster for these days, surely not to control tv/audio gear??

        • @REDRUM: Why not? Audio gear from the 90s (or even 70s) still works fine and doesn't have Network/Bluetooth/etc control…

Also TVs at the pub ;)

  • I visited a Xiaomi Store in China yesterday and saw this phone. The design and the build quality is absolutely amazing. Philippe Starck (French designer) really nailed this. I'd give it 10/10 purely on look and feel alone. If it wasn't for the average camera quality, I'd buy one at the store instantly.

    • I was really looking at getting this phone, but your comment about camera concerns me. Is it just low light performance that is below average, or are there any other things to note as well?

      • The camera sensor is fine. Optical image stabilisation as well. Xiaomi camera app and software post producing of pics taken is average. However you can install Google's pixel camera app and photos will be much better

        • Thanks for your response. Will keep an eye out for any decent deals then :)

    • Luckily you didn’t . The rom is Chinese version, almost useless in OZ.

  • Any drop tests on this one yet? I was put off the mi mix 1 when I saw it crack like an egg from a few feet. One of the draw backs of ceramic phones I guess.
