I got the expensive Braun equivalent of this (they sell for around $100) and it was dangerously inaccurate. A cheap digital under tongue type was much better. I compared both to a hospital one. So if you do get this one make sure to compare it to a known good one.

  • So is this good or not and is this the best price available

The big reason to get a non contact one is to take temperatures of sick kids. That’s the way they sell them, but if this one is as inaccurate as the Braun one I got (which you’d think would be excellent given the brand and price) it’s not only useless, it is actually very dangerous. Maybe Xiaomi know something Braun don’t and it’s ok, but when a $20 digital under tongue one works fine and won’t be responsible for your death why bother?

Here’s the one I got which is rubbish:

Something like this is all you need and very accurate. It does take about a minute to take a reading, but at least it’s correct. $6.50

      • Firstly thank you very much for your advice / input and secondly I won't be buying this as accuracy will be the key point here for me

    • I'd be interested in knowing the accuracy as well, I have two kids.

In the meantime do yourself a favour and buy this…measures temp quickly (important with wiggly kids) and accurately. Put on to it by a nurse.

      • Our midwife also recommended this model so this will be my next purchase as I already have the omron one above ^^

Doctor here - did a quick read of literature and the evidence is a bit sketchy on how accurate these are. Hospitals and GP's use tympanic membrane thermometers (your ear drum) which are the most accurate. These appear to use IR sensors to test skin temperature over the forehead which will not be as accurate as mouth/rectal/axillary temps.

    • The last two times a gp took my temperature was with a touchless forehead style one. Same for my two kids. That was 4 occasions across 3 different doctors. So they seem to be gaining popularity. I have been keen to get one but the reviews of the retail ones have been pretty rough. I assume doctors get a better quality product. It's been a couple of years since I have been in a hospital scenario but the nurses were all using the ear ones then.

      • Sorry to be cynical but they use it as its fast enough to facilitate their 5 minute appointments and they don't have to pay for disposables.

Accuracy has nothing to do with it…

      • I could imagine an advantage for a GP is not having to clean it or keep a supply of tips (which they use in hospital for the ear ones) which they’d have to pay for and are a pain to keep on hand. Add to that the incredibly dodgy freebies system in the medical biz. Also a GP is just as susceptible to BS advertising as we are, unless they take the time to research it like the one above did.

      • There may be reasons for using these - they're quick and non-invasive. If you were doing stacks of kids in a day then you might accept the inaccuracy for the convenience.

  • One serious flaw in these is that the normal evaporative cooling of the body could potentially cause very inaccurate readings. As the sweat on a forehead vaporises the skin can be chilled by several degrees. The tympanic ones are not that expensive (I can see cheap ones for under $20), and the basic oral ones are more accurate. This would best be used as a VERY quick and dirty approximation.

  • With these IR Thermometers, I tend to take multiple readings around the head:
ie forehead, between the eyes, behind and under the ear to look for the highest reading.
