Galax GTX1080 EXOC $669 (+ $20- $35 Shipping to Brisbane or Free Pickup in Store) @ PLE Computers

420

I came across this deal a little earlier today after securing stock for myself figured some others might be interested. With the inflated prices of the graphics card market finally coming back down to a reasonable level, this is the cheapest 1080 in Australian stock that i could find. In terms of cost it comes in roughly at the same cost as the cheapest reference(blower cooler) 1080 from amazon. the reviews look pretty decent provided you can tolerate a red led that cannot be turned off(or just pull the heat sinks off entirely like i will be doing).

Here is a little review i came across. Galax 1080 review

Mods do your thing if you need to change any thing.

Side note. looks like the latest purchase deal of a bonus copy of "shadow of War" from nvidia expired a few days ago. I have talked to the staff at PLE a few times in the past and they are always very accommodating so might be worth sending them a email and asking if they would be willing to edit the receipt to the 12th?

  • I had 2 of them, both running quiet and Can OC quite well. Now sold one and one is kept.

    • The youtube review says that the fans are always running. Did you find this and if so did you find that it wasn't too noisy? I am after a quiet card.

      • +1

I have this card and it's great my case is well vented and i can hardly hear the card .

        • I have the 1070 version of this card. Run pretty quiet in my bedroom while downloading something overnight. Not sure about the 1080 but the fan on mine will always run at %50 percent minimum and even at 100% fanspeed imho gets a bit louder but very tolerable. The fan noise generating from it is a deep wooshing sound at 100%

      • Wasn’t noisy at all at low speed.

      • +1

ill find out for sure when i get my two cards but im sure the fan curves can be manually controlled with afterburner or precision x. that way you should be able to set the fan to very low speeds when idle and ramp them up under load. but that said normally with these types of fans they should be able to run silently up to about 50-60%, and start becoming a jet engine at around 75% and over.

  • Good price for local stock.
My only issue is the 2 year warranty with galax cards, not 3 years like msi/gigabyte etc

  • Anyone have any experience with PLE customer service before? Once bitten, twice shy with places like MSY and shoppingexpress.

In all my experience they have been great. Quick to answer emails and always willing to help. Specifically I dealt with a guy called Robert mostly but they were more than willing to order in specific parts for my newest water loop and checked the radiators for damage before posting them out to me.

I don't think I've dealt with a better computer company than PLE. Had no issues with warranties. For a further 2 examples - I couldn't find a 5m displayport cable anywhere that worked since at 1440p 144hz the cables are only rated to make it to 3m at that high bandwidth. PLE's cables magically worked at 5m. Second example was a PSU power cable, melted some ebay items, the PLE cable is happy drawing 1200watts down it 24/7.

    • PLE are great. Galax, not so much… Unresponsive, slow RMA service. You'd think they'd think of a better name (used to be Galaxy) when they re-branded the low-tier company.

PLE are worlds apart from MSY and SE in terms of customer service.

When was the last time you dealt with MSY? I believe they have improved quiet a bit in the past couple of years.

Just last week I had some RAM that was riddle with errors. Took it in and to my surprise no questions asked, replaced them with a new pair of the rack. Thanks for coming!!

      • Two weeks ago actually. Needed to get a purchase record looked up and emailed through for tax records seeing as it wasn’t sent with a online order I made. 3 phone calls and a email later they still plan to email it through by the end of the day. Also part of the same order came used ( seals broken on the packaging and minor surface scratches that come from use).

Over all they have their place in the market but customer service defiantly not what you will go to msy for.

As for your ram issue almost every store ( I can’t think of any that don’t do this) will just take it back if it’s within a month of purchase they just send it back to the distributor and get a credit on the defective sticks. Some stores will do it out to about 6 months it’s when the item is older does the stores true nature come out.

        • My RAm was almost a year old, but again I was expecting them to take it back and snd it off. Not give me a new kit then and there on th spot.

Anyway, not only related to MSY, as most places will try and get out of return if they can, but I believe MSY are on the improve with the RMA service, and probably varies from store to store.

As for answering the phone, well that really needs improving.

  • I've bought from PLE ages ago in Perth. Always been reasonable.

  • Dimensions(with Bracket): 296 x 144 x 43mm
    Dimensions(without Bracket): 282 x 128 x 43mm

Which bracket are they talking about?

    • No idea about the bracket, card is as long as my 970 was and no problem fitting in my case.

Also i purchased this as an upgrade for my Oculus rift and the image quality increase over my 970 was quite a bit , images were much much clearer and smoother " i had assumed that the slight blurryness to images was my eyesight turns out it was my gtx 970 graphics card ymmv .

    • The one that you screw to your case? No idea why you wouldn't have it though.. Useless info.

      • You want width without bracket to know how much clearance you will have inside of your case.

  • Im a complete 'noob' at gaming pc's but have been interested for a long time now.
    I have ps4 pro xbox one s. 4k tv (just a cheap Hisense) .
About how much cost-wise, would I have to add to the cost of this good graphics card, to make a gaming pc that would be much much better than my ps4 pro ? Like something that would blow my ps4 pro away (besides a larger and much noisier fan😃 lol) .
ie. Say I buy this card today, what do I need to spend then on the rest ? For something say, at least 150% better than my ps4 pro .
I know this is probably quite complicated in variables, but just a rough idea of a total cost, on top of this card, would be great .
    Thanks.

Ok depending on where you want to sit in the future you have two real options. intel just released their new coffee lake line up which is looking very very good for gaming but costs are pretty high as the cpu it’s self the i7 range is 470$ - 550$ and the i5 range is around 280$ - 390$. For gaming alone intel is king and with the new 8th generation they have bumped up their core count on the full line up so this is a good place to start.

Edit. I forgot to mention coffee lake runs abit hot so you want to water cool the cpu, so add a AIO cooler which will do the job well and keep things quiet. Around 100-200$ will get you a good one, corsair make good budget orientated coolers that work well or nzxt make very good ones coolers that also look very nice ( I use the nzxt x62 on my non custom loop builds).

Motherboards are specific to this cpu generation and naturally they cost around 300-350$ for some thing around middle of the line up.

Ram wise you need some ddr4. 16 gig is the minimum you want for gaming which is around the 250-300$ area or go for 32 gig which naturally is about 2x what I just mentioned.

Power supply you would want a good and reliable one ( there are cheap ones but I see no point in putting your whole system at risk just to save 50$). With a 1080 graphics card you will need a 650watt or higher power supply and as a suggestion you should get one out of the gold efficiency range. I generally recommend either corsair or evga they start at about 150$ for what you will need.

A case for it all and this comes down to personal taste. My own personal cases I have been using lately are corsair and nzxt cases which are pretty nice but it’s all about personal preference and will cost about 100$ and upwards.

And the graphics card to go with it would complete the tower. The rest like keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers/ headphones is all personal taste and budget you can get cheap or go high end but it’s pretty simple to work out.

All up this would run rings around any console and not have any issues playing games.

If you need help with specific parts or a proper guide I can help you out later on. But this is a rough idea of what you would be looking at.

      • Thanks very much for the detailed advice Kiato.
So, looking at the lower numbers there for parts, I see I would be looking at about another $1,300 investment, on top of the price of this graphics card in deal .
Wow , I did not realise such high costs compared to ps4 pro (I think cost me about $349 total) .
A possibly controversial question, is it worth it ?
Like for 4 times cost of ps4 pro, amd I goin to be getting a system 4 times as good (would be for gaming only) . Or would you guys estimate that it would be about 150% better than ps4 pro ?
Sorry for the questions which probably seem very noobish . But there are probably many anothers in the same boat as me and thinking along the same lines.
Ie. What makes it worth such a higher investment of funds compared to just buying ps4 pro ?? Obviously, some of you have spent much more than ps4 pro, and it must seem 'worth it' to you all . I haven't experienced proper gaming pc gaming, Im assuming it must be much much better in many respects .

The computer is a much higher cost than a console yes, the thing about it is that the mass production and bulk purchase of parts bring the price down for buying. Is it worth buying a pc, in short yes. The little ng answer is there is a huge quality difference between the two gaming quality aswell as variety and productivity software. Games can be modded and games can be purchased for much cheaper on pc eg. I just purchased destiny 2 on pc it cost just under 49$ aus, On console I believe they are at about 89$ for standard at release and like 129$ for deluxe? . So games are cheaper on this platform and they look much better.

The initial cost of the computer components is high but buying a good i7 system right now 3-4 years down the road if the games you play start feeling slow just upgrade the graphics card and the system will run everything at top teir speeds again . So the longevity is with the pc aswell as long as you find good quality parts to put in it.

Back to your question of if you think a pc is 4 x better than a console well that’s subjective for pure processing power yes easily 4x greater. Games wise well it depends on what you play. Just keep in mind the numbers I gave you are for a high end system where costs come out to about 2000-2500$, this is in the vicinity of top teir for a pc. You could easily cut costs down by going for some thing around the middle teir and cut about 500-1000$ from that number and still play games well.

Ultimately it’s subjective I find computers over consoles worth the extra costs but other might not. Have a look around check out twitch etc see what’s out there and decide if it’s worth it. ( check out “ escape from Tarkov “ if you are into god based games)

Ps. I own a ps4 pro aswell , I think I have turned it on 3-4 tines total.

        • +1

you cant really multiply the improvement imo. It will look better if you spend the money…but for me the gain is more the entire format. fps or rts with a mouse and keyboard is something you learn to really appreciate and enjoy. even sport games or racers with a low end controller can be tweaked and feel amazing. it is more the entire usability and the satisfaction you've put it together. It isn't for everyone…but pc gaming is something that pc enthusiasts will claim is far superior…not only because of the gpu limitations of consoles, but all the other aspects that a pc brings to a game.

        • @Kiato:
Thanks very much for the advice and info.
I did have the idea that the graphics card like whats in the OP post was the main component. However from what you have explained, its more that a new graphics card can get an older system back up to speed, to play games well again .
Certainly better to futureproof though and I guess it will save in the long run.
          Thanks
