My wife needs a new phone. I'm now trying to decide whether or not to get her this or an Oppo A57.

    • +3

I haven't used the Oppo A57, but my experience of this is:
      1. Bluetooth sound is glitchy - it frequently double-plays the first few seconds of a track, and clips voice responses etc on bluetooth
      2. It has weirdly random lags - I'll be doing something and it will just choke up for 3-8 seconds.
      3. Battery life is poor.

That's going from a Redmi Note 3 Special Edition (kate) to the SGS7. My wife has exactly the same problems on the same model.
Never had these problems either on a Sony Xperia Z2, Xperia Z, Nexus 5, or Nexus 5x.

      • +3

I've enjoyed my s7 since launch, it's still up to date and built well..

S7 lense kit still available, got mine today… genuine Samsung

        • +2

Ok - can I get you to test a few things for me? Just to check if they only affect me. (If not, that's fine)
          1. If you hold down home button to activate Google Assistant, then use voice to add a reminder, then turn off screen and turn it back on does the "Reminder set" message play again each time you turn the screen on?
          2. If you have a bluetooth headset connected and start playing music (e.g. through Google Play Music) does the start of the track regularly play for a moment, then glitch and start at the start of the song again?
          3. If you have a bluetooth headset connected and you try to use a voice command to send a message with the phone screen on (for example: Send a message to xxx, dictate the text, etc) does it tell you after each step that it has lost the connection to Google and you have to click the microphone again?
          4. If you attempt to use a voice command via the headset using Google Assistant, does it often clip the first bit of the response from Google Assistant?
          5. If you try to send a message using Google Assistant where there are multiple send options (e.g. send a message to xxx and it asks you what application to use: SMS, WhatsApp, etc) does it ever correctly detect when you say SMS or does it just keep asking again and again?

Honestly, my main bugbear with this phone is bluetooth behaviour. I can tolerate mediocre battery (I bought a battery case, although now I can't use Android Pay because of the case), and random lags (annoying, but it always recovers). However, the really flakey behaviour of the bluetooth drives me crazy. I've never had bluetooth problems like this with any other device I've owned - not even with custom ROMs. I'd try a custom ROM on the SGS7, but because it has an e-fuse I'd never be able to go back to the original state.

@2be8: Have those problems been widely reported, or they're just things you were experiencing with your phone? I don't own S7 and am still rocking S5, but I haven't heard other people saying they had those issues with their devices. Probably you got unlucky and ended up with a bad unit.

        • +1

          @2be8:

My S7 does number 2 aswell. I think it may be an issue with google play music? i dont think it does it with anything else

        • +1

@2be8: Was gonna chime in for you, but I have google assistant and all voice commands off, even if I try any of that manually it wants google cards turned on which I keep off intentionally.

All I can offer is I have no issues with bluetooth to my car for music, GPS and phone calling. I'm still on Marshmallow 6.0.1.

        • +1

          @2be8:
          1. No
          2. Haven't tried through Google Play Music but doesn't on other music apps
          3. Mine works perfectly fine.
          4. No
          5. Mine automatically defaults to SMS. Didn't know it can be used with other apps.

Don't have any issues around Random lag either. Have you tried step 1 and 4 on this? http://androidcure.com/speed-up-samsung-galaxy-s7-edge/

        • +1

@2be8: I get the Google Play music issue on mine too

        • +1

@scotteth: Beginning to sound like a GPM issue with the S7.

        • Thanks everyone for chiming in!

@AussieDaddy I haven't found the issues widely reported, but my wife has exactly the same phone and the same issues with it. Otherwise I'd have just concluded it was a bad unit. Unfortunately, Samsung support's response to any issue at all is "send it in and we'll have a look".

@Tm15 @scotteth - Cheers. I'll try to reproduce the problem with Google Play Music on another device, and another media player on the Galaxy S7 to try to isolate which it is.

@bae28 I'm not sure when it detects that you can use other apps: I think it offers hangouts if you have a gmail address associated with the person. The problem is that once you've specified which one to use the first time it defaults to that so it's hard to test it repeatedly. I think I need to get a video recording of the problem.

@enceladus94 - I got the phone after Android 7 was out, so I don't think I ever used it on Marshmallow unfortunately. I'm not game to flash it back to see if it didn't have the problems :)

S7 is a great bloody phone. Edge is not needed at all. I can't believe they're selling them for $550 real stock! I wish I could buy another one.

Cool.. and the voting system for this account is glitched.

  • +3

The edge version was around this price from mobileciti a month ago

    • Got one from that deal and happy with it

    • Does Mobileciti have AU stock? If so might hold out for the hopes of another deal there then

  • How is it compare to S5 [camera wise] ?

    • +4

The S7 is heaps better in the camera department.

    • Night and day.

    • Superior in low light conditions.

    • +1
      • +6

I'm not going to down-vote your comment since you seem to be asking genuinely. The megapixels being larger on the S5 does not matter, it's not the megapixels that determine the quality of the image, it's the quality of the lenses & sensors inside the camera.

The Galaxy S7 camera is significantly better than the S5 camera.

        • +2

Oh ok, thank you for that explanation. The marketing dept almost got me. Do you know any other phone [ under $300 ] has a good camera ? $559 is still a lots

        • @frewer: it's hard to find a good camera phone in that price range, maybe an older sony flagship phone? I upgraded from redmi note 3 to s7 edge because of the camera.

        • @kolorijo: So what will happens when S7's batteries 'die'

        • +1

          @frewer:

There's always a way to change them, just not as simple as it used to be. You'd have to take them into a repair shop and you can buy the battery online yourself and they'll change it for a fee (and that's only after your 2 year warranty has ran out).

However I haven't heard of people complaining from batteries dying on the S7. They slowly depreciate over time going from 100% capacity to about 80% to 90% of it's original capacity maybe over a 2+ years period which is normal for any battery (and I'm not sure if this is factual for all, it's just how it feels like using it). However if you've used any of these recent phones, with quick charge, this isn't even an issue anymore. You simply plug your phone in for 15 to 20 minutes and you're set for most of the day.

As for phones in the $300 price range with a great camera, I am not really sure, it depends what you consider to be great quality. Maybe someone else can assist you on that.

@POL1T1CS: Thank you VERY MUCH for those infor, I have no clue about these latest phone. Im using a Homtom 7 that bought on ebay for $94. Samsung 7 should thanks you if we decide to get one XD. Ta

  • I'm thinking of buying this, but noticed the Motorola 3375175 Moto Z is also available at the same price. Anyone recommend the Motorola over the Samsung?

    • +4

      OTTOMH, the Samsung
      - has a headphone jack (if you care)
      - has Bluetooth 4.2 whereas the Moto has 4.1
      - has a bigger battery (3000mAh vs 2600mAh)
      - is water-resistant
      - has Samsung Pay (if you care)
      - does not have FM radio whereas the Moto does
      - has wireless charging

You're ultimately getting more for that price. I would recommend Sammie's S7.

        Thanks!

    Cashrewards people.

    • -1

Not sure why everyone gets so excited…in a couple months you'll finally get a tiny bit of money into your cashrewards account and can then transfer $5+ to your actual bank account a week after that.

      • +2

On an item like this thats perhaps $5 - $10 depending on the reate at the time. That's free shipping.

  • +2

I absolutely love the S7. I've had it as a work phone for some time now and it's probably my favourite version of the Galaxy. The camera is fantastic (and the same as that in the S8), the size harps back to before android phones needed to be bigger and bigger and surprisingly after all this time hasn't slowed down at all. This is a great price.

  • +1

Bought this yesterday to replace my S5. Good price - cheapest I could find prior was $698 at Officeworks.

  • +4

Samsung S7 is such a bloody good phone. This is an amazing (profanity) price.

    • -2

Not an amazing price, see my comment above

      • I didn't see that deal. Then they're both amazing prices.

        • not really, an amazing price for this phone would be 450

        • @mlburnian: That'd be a ridiculous price. This is the realm of amazing mate. I don't see how these phones could get down to $450 this fast!?

Btw I'll buy one for my gf if it hits $500.

        • @StoneSin:
LG G6 local stock can be had for this price. The screen on the S7 is too small

        • @mlburnian: Too small? No way. Big enough for sure. I came from an iPhone 4 and that screen was "okay". No such thing as too small in post-2015 phones.

        • @mlburnian:
Where can u find local stock? Mobileciti?

  • I liked the phone apart from the front crappy camera. It was sharpening the image badly. I gave it to my dad. Otherwise a good phone.

    • +1

Anything else not working out for you tech wise? If so feel free to give to me lol :D

  • Still waiting on a S8+ deal :/

  • Great phone, I love buying phones and upgrading but it's pretty much a perfect phone so I can't justify it!

  • S7 is a pretty good camera phone, has a good screen and water resistance. But the speaker and headphone jacks isn't that good, while being very fragile.

  • +3

    This or G6?

  • +1

    The S7 rox.

I went from an S2 to an S4, then to an S6, backwards to an S5, then went to an A3 (2015) then to A3 (2016), and finally to an S7 2nd hand from eBay.

None of them has the same quality camera, nor wi-fi calling, nor (IIRC)water resistance, great phone at a great price. My 2nd hand one wasn't much less than this price.

  • Awesome price!!! $564 for an S7 is crazy!

Oh how quickly the mighty (prices) fall…

  • +1

I bought mine for 500 for S 7 months ago..

    • Australian stock?

      • No,from eBay oversea, bit no issues so far

  • Not trying to start a fight with the fan boys, but how does the camera compare to Sony's Xperia Xz premium?

    • Sony's camera algorithm is awful, the same sensor on their flagship is utilized much better by other companies. Even the OnePlus, a budget flagship series, has better camera algorithm using the same sensor. Xperia XZ (2016) just got Camera2 API added to the latest testing Android 8.0 build though, so if it makes it onto release for the XZ Premium, you could install the Pixel's camera app and get Pixel tier pictures. Its a pretty significant improvement on my Redmi Note 3, known for having an awful camera, and even worse on AOSP (stock nexus-like android) roms

      • Wow thanks for the thorough review! I didn't realise companies used the same sensor but added their own software to it. So are you saying that the pixel has the best camera at the moment?

        • Yea, Sony's sensor is really popular among manufacturers, but ironically Sony has the worst camera. Pixel's camera isn't the best, nor does it have the best spec (no OIS/etc…), but Google's camera software allow it to compete with Samsung and other manufacturers. Installing a ripped version onto other devices significantly improved their image quality

  • Guys any s8 deal?

  • Hmmmm just smashed my s7 with a light drop and now it's dead..
To replace with this or a LG G6.. similar price and apart from missing out on Samsung Pay, seems G6 is better value
    Any thoughts ?

    • Unlike Sammy, the G6 camera lens scratches after awhile leaving you with blurry photos. LG ditched sapphire glass to cut costs.
