  • this looks quite interesting…
anyone have any experience with these?

  • What SSD's are people looking at putting in these (given the supplied eMMC isn't very good)?

    • +1

It's intended to take 2242 M.2 Sata III SSDs, which can be a little expensive. You can use a cheaper 2280 SSD and it'll work fine, by using a knife to cut away the plastic enclosure - pretty simple "mod" that'll save you a few bucks.

      • hey mate,

Would something like this work ?
        https://www.pccasegear.com/products/31358?gclid=Cj0KCQjwsZHP…

Whereas this needs a bit of work as you described? the price diff doesn't seem much.
        https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Hard-Drives-&-SSDs/SSD-m…

Just wanting something a bit better than the eMMMC based on the reviews.

Pulled the trigger on the laptop above. Only want a laptop or occasional travel movies, internet and office apps. I assume you can use the win10 tool to install your activated win10 installation onto the SSD afterwards for faster boot ?

        • +1

I've got a feeling that smaller SSD won't work, as it has the wrong shaped connector - you need the type with the two small outside notches.

Here's a video showing someone install the larger 2280 SSD stick - it really seems quite easy and risk-free: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y48jZ4Yt88I

Re-installing Win10 on the SSD should work fine, I've also heard of people having success using software to mirror their eMMC OS install to the SSD.

        • @railspider:

Thanks mate for the info and the youtube vid! I'll stick to the 2280 one, theres more info on the net around it as well.

  • The ones I see are normally 3gb ram so 6 seems like it would be better…. that's the biggest downfall for my CHUWI Hi10 Pro 2 in that 4gb of ram isn't enough But this EZBOOK has a slower CPU.

    • What application do you run that 4GB of RAM is not enough? When considering this kind of laptop I am afraid that this won't be much use more than browsing/email?

  • Intel Apollo Lake N3450 Quad Core 1.1GHz, up to 2.2GHz

    Why oh why!!
6GB ram + FHD screen + SSD via upgrade but is then let down by this CPU.

    • That little CPU has a lot of grunt. It's no M3, but it is totally fine for browsing and videos and 2D/Retro games. It can also be overclocked pretty comfortably, this model has some excellent cooling via a thick copper plate.

I do agree though that this device with an M3 or better would be great - but you have to be realistic at the price point.

      • True, the price is right for this machine.

  • Previous Gearbest listing states upto 8GB of RAM for this model:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/315643

    Is that actually the case?

  • Just FYI, some settings to speed up the stock eMMC can be found here :

    • +1

That apparently depends on the eMMC chip shipped with the unit. Some V.4 ones come with generic flash whereas others have a Samsung chip.
V3 units had Toshiba flash - which could be accelerated using that BIOS tweak.

      https://techtablets.com/forum/topic/how-to-bwingen-ncard-bet…

I tried making contact with Sunny, the GB ozbargain rep to see if he can help out ensuring the unit I ordered comes with a decent eMMC.
Hope he'll get back to me with a positive outcome.

      • +1

Thanks for the reply, that's interesting. If you go to page 3 of that thread, it seems one guy with the generic eMMC had some joy applying the patch on his v4. I ordered a unit yesterday, so will be interesting what it comes with. I'll keep you posted.

  • Possible to bring this deal back?

  • Has anyone received their laptop yet?
How long does it usually take? I've got a tracking number but no info on it…and it was shipped out over 8 days ago.

    • +1

      @Nav2k

I ordered 18/10. Here's my tracking (was showing only the first line until 29/10!!)

      2017-10-23 14:40:00Collection Shenzhen (guangdong) - CHINA
      2017-10-25 14:58:00Arrived Hub Hongkong
2017-10-27 11:24:00In Transit to Destination Hongkong
      2017-10-29 06:37:00Received And Clearing Sydney
      2017-10-30 12:27:00Shipping information received by Australia Post[Started]

I assume this means I will get it (Brisbane) sometime late this week with a bit of luck.

(Gearbest should charge a $10 "express handling" fee and it'd be worth it…)

      • +1

Thanks mate! I only just got it this morning…(1st Nov). Almost had the same shipping details as you. Problem is there was no visibility on Aust Post with the tracking number given even last night.

        • +1

Supposedly mine is onboard for delivery today, but nobody is home, so I probably won't get it until tomorrow. Boo.

        • @ozoner:

Followed the vid you posted with the SSD install…just changed a few things…our models you don't need to tape down the second screw as it's used to pop the small cover back in (a window for the SSD). Also I didn't tape it down…whether good or bad…I believe the laptop bottom cover will hold it down sufficiently and too much stress on taping the SSD down may cause wearing of the insulation of the electrical tape over the screw cover.

Re-installed windows 10 on the SSD and runs beautifully! Downloaded a few free games from Microsoft store to test it, all good.

However, the WIFI isn't that great…at the end of our house it is weak and doesn't pick up well but my wifes mac book air is quite good there…probably my only gripe.
Also the power adapter is shitty…need to source a local 12V 3A output adapter.

        • @Nav2k: have you tried updating the wifi with driver booster? Fixed my wifi dropouts nicely.

If you are using the included AU power adaptor I can see why you don't like it much. FWIW it fits beautifully into a Xiaomi plug board - recommended.

  • If you bring this deal back I am buying one right now

    Most likely getting mine tomorrow!

Can those who received their units post the embedded eMMC chip type in their machines?
    Generic/Samsung/Toshiba?

    • +1

      Hey mate,

I got it yesterday and put in a 250GB Western Digital blue 2280 like the video @ozoner posted. Mines a SanDisk DF4064 inside.

Then re-installed windows 10 by making a USB, did a hard disk test.
The speeds from the eMMC was like 70mb/s and then the ssd went up to 550.

      • Hello I am interested to get this laptop but from reading techtablets forum there seems to be numerous people finding it impossible to boot from the SSD after installing Windows 10 on it. Eg. https://techtablets.com/forum/topic/ezbook-3-pro-ssd-bios-is…, and https://techtablets.com/forum/topic/ezbook-3-pro-v5-v4-emmc-…

Also, how do you find typing on the keyboard?

        • Dont have any issues with the ssd and installing windows but they keyboard is touching some of the keys around the "w" and "e" key making it annoying.
I need to play around and jiggle it a bit to fix that.

as I type this it's really shitting me now

        • Thanks for the feedback. hmm..
It does seem that this laptop has quality issues.

  • Thanks for that…
So they started using SanDisk eMMC with the latest batch…
Would be interesting to know if the BIOS speed tweak below works on those SanDisk chips.

Brought the laptop to work and just tried it for you…(and now im glad I did!! )

      Nice!

Good to know the SanDisk chip is capable of taking the load!
Fingers crossed my unit will have it as well :)

    • +1

Thanks for testing - assuming mine has the sandisk in it, I don't think I'll bother upgrading.

      • yeh I should have done this before! I don't know if I would have upgraded now…the 70 to 200 jump is quite massive…
        ah well.

Having many wifi drop outs though even at work…let me know how you guys go…I know there's a wifi fix aswell.

        • Just got mine as well :)
          SanDisk eMMC, BIOS tweak works.
Get IObit Driver Booster to update all your drivers:
          https://www.iobit.com/en/driver-booster.php
Windows update service was disabled by default…
I started the service and set it to manual. Installing latest OS patches now.
System restore was also turned off most likely to save up on space. Turned it on as well.

        • +1

          @netRAT:
Thanks for the tip re: driver-booster. Fixed my network dropouts and signal issues completely!!

With these tweaks (especially the EMMC bios tweak) this is hands down the best $300 notebook I have used. It's ridiculously good for the price.

        • +1

@ozoner: Ok update on the wireless driver. The driver that's installed by the driver booster is only capable of wireless-N, not wireless-AC. If you install the latest driver off the intel site, you get AC and no dropouts! (yay)
