books are better, still make you think

  • +2

It's an old but solid build.
    Good screen.
Business laptop appearance with gaming GPU inside.

  • Wasn't this deal is better before for just few bucks (if you don't count that $100 store credit) more but getting 6800h instead?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/841212
Is there a big difference between 6600h and 6800h? But I guess since there's RTX3060, doesn't really matters?
Please note you won't receive the store credit till 11am 27/5/2024

    • 2 more cores are useful for CPU heavy tasks but many won't notice a difference

  • +1

Would this be able to be charged by a 65w usb c? I have a dock which does power and display but no additional power sockets nearby

    • +1

Spec sheet say 230W…which is surprisingly large. Even Legions come with only 120, 150, 170W charger.

My guess is 65W is too low. My old standard ThinkBook no discreet CPU takes 65W, so this with a GPU… probably not

    • +2

It may charge but very slowly, or with lower performance.
65w charger on my 95w Lenovo downclocks the CPU noticeably

    • cant find anywhere if it would charge by USB C even if slowly, deal breaker for me.

    • +1

The official Lenovo stance in their manuals is that usb-c charging is for when the device is off whereas other brands have swapped to a usb-c charger for all uses. They recommend sticking to the proper full power charger for most uses including gaming. Should be able to charge from the usb-c pd ports.

That being said, if you create a power profile with boost disabled and the rtx 3060 disabled you may be fine to run off a 65w usb-c charger for low power uses.

I would get one for photo editing, but I got cheapest Apple M1 MacBook Air and the thing is so much faster in the same photo editing app compared to any Windows machine I owned. returned air and got refurbished pro with 16/1tb for $2500. yeah it's twice as much, but battery lasts forever, it's blazing fast, built like tank, and comes with mini LED panel and solid speaker system..

used to be a big Lenovo fan and I hate Apple but credit where credit is due. I don't think I am ever getting a windows laptop for personal use

my desktop/gaming machine is Windows of course, running RTX 3070, and I am not changing that lol

More expensive macs are indeed faster then cheaper windows machines.

the M1 Air (256GB/8GB) I bought for $1200 was faster than my $4k Intel i7-1260p with 64gb of RAM and RTX 3050 Ti in the same app.

not to mention that intel laptop was spinning its fans like crazy, especially under load, and lasted barely 5h if I was lucky, 6+ if I ran it in absolute eco mode, which defeats the purpose of having a powerful machine

MacBook on the other hand, M1 didn't even have a fan, and on MBP it has one but I don't think I ever heard it.. wakes up instantly, doesn't eat battery like crazy, just a completely different experience

TLDR not apples to apples comparison, but for creative workloads and day to day usage Apple M platform is just better at this stage. wouldn't buy another windows machine unless the app I absolutely need only runs on Windows

        • +4

Sounds like the windows laptop was thermal throttling reducing it's performance

        • +1

I'm surprised, tests of M1 vs G14 with 4800H and 1660Ti shows the G14 benchmarks being superior, well in the video I saw. The system in this deal is even better due to the RTX 3060, and the CPU performs better in single threaded performance though roughly the same in multi-threaded performance due to having less cores.

@FabMan: still, that's my experience. have been a windows guy (and a Dell Latitude reseller) for years and years, never been an apple fanboi and never will be

  • Not bad for a portable workstation or photo editing etc.
The screen is quite nice and the GPU useful for Lightroom/Photoshop AI tasks

Not really for gaming with the higher res/lower refresh screen but can always output to an external monitor - might as well get a desktop then….

    • I'm using a laptop with a 960m still, I pick the games carefully and I can still have fun on it. Recently I have been playing Boomer shooters on my laptop and leave the more demanding games for my desktop.

    • Dlsr will make the screen not as big of an issue.

  • +1

Also such an over 2 years old model stock, will the battery still be in healthy state?

    • As long as the voltage is still stable. Charge it fully for couple nights should be all good.

  • Still waiting for one of your awesome RAM deals OP!
    It's for a 7800X3D so hoping to get 6,000Mhz, 30/32 CL.

  • How is this versus a Dell G15 RNG55201200AU?
Saw an ex display one for like $720

    • +1

not comparable, this post is a faster machine.

      That Dell looks like a 12th gen i5 (DDR4?) and 3050

      This is a R5 DDR5 and 3060

This also has a much better display

      • Many thanks!!

        • If you just need a computer to use the internet and portability then the Dell is fine.

If you are after a bit of light gaming then this post is better.
