  • What an odd laptop in 2024.

3 gen old cpu, albeit a good one from it's generation with integrated radeon graphics and a dedicated nvidia card (entry level) with 16gbs of ram.

It's not really a good gaming laptop, it's mediocre at productivity and less power efficient compared to modern amd cpu laptops and it weighs like a brick at 2kg.

At $1300 there are many many thinkpads that will outperform it for roughly the same money and around 1.5kg or under.

    • +1

It's really only 2 (1.5?) generations old as it's based on the Zen3+ architecture.

I'm looking for a new laptop.
Could you please send the link with similar price that has dedicated video card with newer amd CPU.
      I can't find less than $1400.
      Thanks

      • Look on aliexpress

      • +1

Yes please do, especially with a sRGB 100% screen

        • Exactly. Can't wait to see what's listed!

  • I was looking to purchase this https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet/refurbished-g15-15-5535-la… (or maybe splash out and get this https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet/refurbished-g15-15-5535-la…)

    How would this compare?

    • performance should be better on dell but build better on lenovo

Depends on what you’re looking for. Keep in mind this isn't a gaming laptop, it does not have enough cooling to have both the CPU and GPU at full boost all the time. Both Dell machines would outpace this in games, especially the 4060.

I would pick this machine over the 4050, purely for the screen.

Between this and the 4060 it depends. Dell for pure gaming performance, this for a good all-rounder experience.

      • Seconding that the screen on the 4050 one is only 250 nits but the 4060 one has 300 nits so should be a lot more usable.

I am currently using the older 16p Gen 2 that came with the 5600h and 3060. The 16p Gen 3 looks to be the exact same build with better performance.

For my purposes I needed colour accuracy for art and photography (the built-in SD card reader was also a huge plus), and decent enough performance with a dedicated GPU for some 3D work or occasional gaming. It was basically the ideal laptop and nothing else came close under $1500.

The build quality is also exceptional and the 2560x1600 16:10 screen has been a game changer. I don't think I could go back to 16:9 or 1080p laptop screens now. Not the biggest fan of the keyboard layout but that's pretty minor.

For heavy video editing, maybe something with more RAM or a newer CPU might work out better but otherwise it's the perfect laptop for design and media consumption.

And the charging brick is huge but the laptop did take 100w through USB-C, so get a gan charger to cut down on the bulk.

I have gen 2 as well. For me it was a powerful, portable x86 computer to do IT uni work on, and occasional gaming. I absolutely loved it for that.
I believe the gen 3 also has slightly more sensible port layout, with a HDMI on the rear rather than just power and two USB-A.

  • Wow there are still brand new 3060 laptop stock? Are ThinkBooks full aluminium body?

  • What is the size of the screen on this laptop diagonally in mm? is 16" marketing hype for 15.6 rounded up? Not trying to undermine Lenovo, just trying to manage expectations.

    • +1

16 is 15.6 in 16:10. The panel is larger vertically

      • +1

Thanks, I since researched and yeah the new standard is the 14" and 16" screens.
I had a dell 24" monitor for years that was 16:10. 16:10 is better than 16:9.

  • I need a new laptop for personal home use. No gaming. Minimum 14" screen. My biggest priorities are speed; capacity to have lots of tabs open at once; long battery life. I'd also prefer a light weight laptop the at doesn't run too hot or loud if used on my lap on the couch. My budget is somewhat flexible - I'm thinking up to $1750. Should I buy this laptop? If not, I'd LOVE some recommendations for what I should buy….my tech knowledge is very average!

Macbooks are the best option. Relatively powerful and speedy while having some of the best battery life compared to similar Windows devices around that price range. You can get a decent M1 or M2 Mac Air for that price. Otherwise any average Windows device will work. Thinkpads are pretty decent for the price.
