  • Can the drive be removed (not soldered to their connector)?

Cant seem to find the answer online.

USB controller is soldered onto the board of the hard drive

For my experience WD drives have the USB adaptor as part of the drive PCB. Not a separate removable adaptor. Which is why I don't buy WD anymore. If the USB controller dies (which is pretty common), you can't put the drive into a new USB case/caddy.

Edit: Most other brands have a removable USB adapter, so HDD can be put into another caddy/adaptor if the original one fails. WD I think are the only brand that have the USB controller as part of the HDD PCB.

      • 3.5" My Book has a connected and is not soldered. So not so sure about the 2.5". Thanks.

        • Yea, I think it is mainly the Elements series and prob more so the 2.5" ones.

Edit: Years ago when I used to work in a retail computer store. We would be getting several faulty WD drives with USB adaptor soldered PCBs a week. Pretty much one a day.

  • $44.80 per TB ain't bad.

Just bought a 10TB Seagate Ironwolf NAS drive from eBay sales as well equating to $46.32/TB

  • I bought this last month from Officeworks for $119. Using as extended storage for my PS4. iI working well so far…

    • with ps4 externals, what filesystems can you use? fat? ntfs? ext4? can you use the external traditionally for your other storage as well? while it stores games or whatever it needs in their directories?

      • +1

umm I understand some of these words…I just plugged in the HD and my PS4 did the rest.

    • Isn't that the WD passport?

I got the WD 2TB elements a few weeks ago for only $99 at Officeworks.

  • Isn't this one cheaper?

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Seagate-STEA2000400-G2-2TB-2-5-US…

Edit :No it is not, $10 postage

    • I don't think so, it is coming up as $22 postage for me which seems quite high…

  • For those using external drives attached to PS4 for extra storage, how are you managing the drive itself? Just have it sitting on top of the console? What other ways do people manage them?

    • Better to not have it on the PS4 console so it runs cooler.

Bought a 2TB portable hard drive on Monday at The Good Guys for $72.80

    • Did the drive use USB 3?

      • Sure does!

        • Huh, great price for it then - did you have a link or anything?

    • what brand?

      • Twas a Seagate! I have only ever owned that brand so can have no complaints. It's slim and sleak. Saw it for $72.80 and its the only reason I bought it. Previously had a 500GB one.

  • Only 3 left

    • +1

I take it back, only able to add 3 to a cart

  • Just bought, thanks OP!

I bought this drive two years ago for the same price.

    • me too… and still going strong, 2 TB, hooked up to the 1 TB xbox one. 50% total storage full. you'll go through 500 gig with about 10 games + UI + apps.
