$49 for 40,000 Velocity points is pretty good value! Nice find!

    • +2

Got to spend 3k in order to get those…

      • +5

Over 3 months though. I think that's easy to manage with bills, fuel, groceries and everything else.

        • +1

Those with amex platinum edge will lose about 3-4 krisflyer points per $1 spent. Will end up only getting about 20,000 krisflyer with this citibank card. But for $49 it's still a good deal

        • +1

          @ausvicee:
You will still get 33,000k Krisflyer points when you convert the 100k Bonus points though: https://www.citirewards.com/tygr-web/partnerProgramsListing.htm?sourceCode=GRCB&cmp=nav&lid=sub-nav|travel|points-transfer

        • @jdogg:
Say if i spend all $3000 on citibank instead of amex platinum edge at the supermarket. I also lose the 12000 points (4 x $3000) on my amex card.

        • @ausvicee: You spend 1k a month at supermarkets? And you make no spend at anywhere that only accepts Visa/MC?

        • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: anywhere that only accepts visa/mc I would use gift cards that I purchase from the supermarket

        • @ausvicee: You buy visa gift cards to get 3 ppd? Unless on special that's poor value there.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: gift cards not necessarily mean prepaid visa/mc. There are also coles/woolworths gift card without any fee and also the recent eftpos rebel promo. 4 pairs of new sneakers for under $25 from rebel, poor value?

        • @ausvicee: Well you're a frugal spender if you can find enough of those to pay for all of your Visa/MC spend. Most aren't. Even still, 24k Krisflyer/31k Velocity for $49 is great value.

        • BPAY usually doesn't count towards the spend for these promotions. So take bills off your list.

        • +4

          @koganei:

Not entirely true. You can use Post Billpay and pay via PayPal :)

        • +2

          @ausvicee:

Mmm probably worth considering whether you have enough 'non Amex' spending to cover it. Then you can extract the value without effecting your Platinum edge earn.

You of course need to consider all your cards though.

        • @j4ck: so there's no additional fees for using a credit card through paypal?

I always thought there was, man have I been missing out on points.

        • +1

          @Soluble:

It depends on the bill you're paying! You'll have to check :)

        • @j4ck: ebay purchases?

        • @Soluble:

I'd assume so. Just add the card into your PayPal wallet and remember to select it when you check out.

  • Is this the same card that was offered free for life a while back?

(if so I wouldn't pay a fee for it, it's been watered down so much it's pretty crap for a rewards card imo)

    • Which one you use now for rewards?

      • Well unfortunately I'm back to this card for the moment (LOL go figure) as I recently finished up another year on an ANZ Black and I'm kinda waiting and seeing if another QF Bonus fee-free deal comes up from another bank.

I suppose to be fair it's been watered down not too differently to other banks. First it's cutting eligible things like BPay, then they cut the earn rate, then cut some rewards stuff, etc.

        • I'll be in the same boat as you soon. My ANZ Black Card is expiring in Jan 2018 and if I don't find another Credit Card that offers bonus sign up points, I will revert back to free for life CitiBank CC which I haven't used in 2 yrs lol. Not too concerned about the card being watered from over the years, after all, its free~~

        • +2

          @HarveySpecter:
Yep, I ve got the Citi Free for life 'Signature' card as well. Wonder if we are still eligible for this platinum card promo?

        • @HarveySpecter:
Apply for Westpac Altitude Black CC Reduced 1st Annual Fee $195, 80,000 QFF Points + Additional 20,000 Bonus on Approval (8wks). Closes 26 October 2017. MUST apply through 3rd party - Qantas, Finder, Points Hack, maybe others.

        • @Yola:

Thanks but I might pass on that one. My ANZ is not expiring until Jan 2018 and I just got the AMEX Explorer card, so if I apply for the Westpac my credit rating will take a huge hit :(

Also, my current combined credit card limit is over $25K!! (which I use no where near that) So I doubt Westpac will even approve my credit application even if I applied for one lol

….and the $5000 minimum spend in 3months will be challenging for me~~

  • A bit challenging to meet min spend.

    • .. living in syd?

      • +1

Yeah pay rent and then charge back haha

  • +3

Anz black credit card is very good too. 75,000 (convert to 37,500 velocity or 27,777 krisflyer). $0 annual fee first year, min spend $2500 in 3 months

    • +1

Yes I am waiting out my time until I can apply for that one again. Also the ANZ frequent flyer one is good for qantas points.

    • unless they've changed it, the ANZ ones require $75k income and this one is only $35k.

the other good thing about those ANZ ones is you can have both the frequent flyer and rewards black at the same time.

    • +1

I think its 75000 Qantas points which to me is so much better than 100000 points of Citibank.

I just decided to cancel my Citibank and apply for ANZ.

  • +2

If you need a secondary card holder it's an extra $99 on the Platinum, or free on the Signature.

So with that in mind, it's just an extra $50 for the signature to get more points per spend (1.5 v 1 at supermarkets etc, and 2 at some other places), and an extra 20k bonus points.

    • +2

wow… cant believe they are charging for supplementary cards. I have never paid any fee whatsoever in the last 5 years including for the supplementary card.

    • +1

don't forget signature comes with complimentary lounge passes AND the convert rate is 2:1 from citi to velocity for example. whereas it's 2.5:1 for platinum.

So best bang for buck is signature actually.

  • Can you transfer pointa between family members with velocity?

  • What's the approximate value of the flights that can be bought with the points? I see mention in the OP that you can get $500 gift card, but I assume you'd probably get better value by using the points for flights.

And how long until the points expire?

      • Dont forget Citi have their own travel/ points booking system that can be better value than Velocity economy bookings.
Business class flights, Velocity is the go.

    • It's 5 Syd-Mel or Syd-Bris flights, no expiry.

Value is extremely hard to measure. E.g. if you need to go Melbourne at the last minute and it's a long weekend, you might find yourself in a situation where the cheapest flight is $300. But if you have points, you'll almost definitely find a business class seat for 15,500 points + $25, right up until the day before (~$700 value). Having points is a lifesaver.

You can use them if you book ahead, but the value's not as good, because you might pick up a flight for $120-150 without points.

      • Last minute reward flights to MEL in Business on a long weekend for minimum points when Economy prices are high seems very optimistic.

        • +1

OK here's an example - 22/12/17, last work day of the year, SYD to MEL.

Every flight between 10am and 7pm is currently $275-375 for economy.

But there's a 6:30pm Business Reward fare still available (valued at $722).

        • @chillin222:

8 weeks away is hardly "last minute".

  • -5

I feel sad and guilty that people actually pay for this.

    • Y?

      • it was free for life a while ago

  • I need to close my Westpac Altitude to avoid the gazillion $ fee, so this is good news for me.

  • +2

Anyone able to get cheque to self in the signup proccess ? instead of BT.

  • Anyone have experience with Citibank travel insurance? Was about to go with the current ANZ card spend $500 get $250 cashback offer (annual fee $99) because of the good reviews ANZ has with their QBE insurance

  • +2

Apply now link in Citibank no longer works. I think their landing page is at fault or they have taken this of.

  • +1

If I already have a 3rd party bank issued Citibank Platinum Rewards, will I be eligible for this?

    • Wondering the same myself. I have the Citi signature card. Can't see anything in T&C about existing cardholders being ineligible.

      • +2

Plenty of OZB's would have the Citi Sig free for life card and want to know. I recently applied and got the lower class ANZ Platinum card and made the spend. Net result, no annual fee charged, but no bonus points given. I guess I lost out on a few points that I could have earnt at the Black / AMEX rate vs the Platinum rate I got..but worth a try.

  • No good faith in Citibank card myself. Last time joined their spent $1 and get 10000 points for 15 months promotion (promoted here on ozbargain https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/274892), they cancelled the promotion after 9 months…

  • What are currency conversion rates on this card?

  • +1

Will it be eligible for existing customer?

  • So 100,000 points are around $500 in Woolworths gift vouchers?

  • Hopefully, they credit the bonus points as soon as I meet the spend, so I can convert the points to Velocity to get another 15% bonus promotion in Nov

  • Did you get approved straight away or get "thank you for your application. We will get in touch with you soon to let you know the status of your application"??

    • I got a conditionally approved for a credit limit of $1xxxxx, and then I uploaded the notice of assessment and a received a confirmation email.

  • Thanks OP, provided I'm approved I'm looking forward to making it rain gift cards!

  • Anyone try to sign up yet!? That Web form is the most awful iv ever seen, wigged out multiple times and I can't tell if it was submitted or not!!! Magic fields appearing after I had clicked submit

    • It's all part of the Citibank experience. It gets even better when you phone the call centre. Enjoy!

  • +1

The only bank that will pre-approve only to decline your application after sending through supporting documents.

  • Does the 3k include a balance transfer from another card?

Also how do I go about transferring?

    • +1

" Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Refunds, Chargebacks and Special Promotions do not contribute to the spend threshold."

  • hmm closed my citibank signature back in march ..

  • Applied for the ANZ rewards, which I believe is a better deal.

  • I applied yesterday, few minuates after i got an email requesting to upload my current payslip then I did that straight away, Still waiting for its approval.

  • Partner is being knocked out of the eligibility for the westpac and anz black deals due to annual salary being below the $75000 minimum. (just under $60000 gross ). Can anyone confirm if this might be one to aim for and next best thing ?
She currently only has a Commonwealth fee-free no-frills card with no benefits at all, and one American Express card direct from AMEX. Any better idea much appreciated.

  • Can I purchase prepaid visa or MasterCard cards from Woolworth or Coles using this credit card?will it count as retail purchase or cash advance

    • +1

      • +1

        @Tomclancy - Thanks for confirming

  • Applied, submitted all docs, they call employer. approved for Platinum not signature .
    13500 limit.

assked then to reduce to 6500

    they put 9000.
    Greedy.

    • they call employer?? THat's dodgy as (profanity), not gonna sign up forget it

  • I think this needs to be added to the top

    Exclusions for the $3000

An Eligible Transaction means any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, payments to other Citi accounts, bank fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges, transactions made using Points and government related transactions. Government related transactions include transactions with government or semi-government entities, or relating to services provided by or in connection with government (for example but not limited to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to the Australian Taxation Office, council rates, motor registries, tolls, parking stations and meters, fares on public transport, fines and court related costs).

    • does that include south east water(victoria south east water company)?

      • Just say those types of bills though Post Bill Pay - https://www.postbillpay.com.au
They will never know what actual category it was considered as (if the merchant accepts this form obviously)

  • Got rejected from Citi for some reason.
Unsure why considering I had $0 debt at the time, stable income of $55k as a Government Employee with a full time on-going role, in the position for 11months.
    No further explanations were given

    • The phone assistance line was not very helpful at all.

      • Have you done a free credit score check + checked credit file? Have you stayed at one address for a long time and was it matched to your ID?

        • I did just recently change address and have only been there for 1 month, so that could be it. And I have not updated my drivers license as I'm only here for 8months. Credit score is good though, 777 according to the last free assessment site check.

      • I'm wrong never mind

  • how long does it take to get bonus points after minimum spend with citi cards?

  • Thanks, received my 100k rewards after meeting the spend criteria :)

  • Lovely. I applied for the minimum credit limit and received a card that has a limit of $20k+

    Wtf?!

    • -2

      Showoff

      • Yeah, no. That's not the point I'm trying to make here.

I only wanted the minimum limit and I'm concerned that they can change the limit without your consent.

        • I'm wrong never mind

  • I have a signature card. Will I get bonus points if I apply for this?

  • Is anyone waiting for their points? Did it come when the statement is issued or was it instant after $3k spend. Mine hasn't come yet…

    • Did you get yours?

      • It came the day after my statement was issued after I hit the $3k spend.
