Maths Questions - I Need Your Help

Hi OzB,

I'm terrible at Math and I'm trying to work this out for my tax refund.

I can claim the percentage of my office floor space to my unit to then work out what percentage of my rent I can claim back.

My office is 12.24 meters squared and the unit in total is 70 meters squared.

I need to find out what percentage of my weekly rent ($480) this equates to.

Thank you!

    12.24/70 = 17.5%.
    17.5% * 480 = $83.93

Its almost as if OP should have known how to do this himself

Being able to identify and acknowledge your weaknesses (and ask for help) is an incredible strength

If I were ever in a position to hire anyone, this quality would be on top of the list far over grades etc.

a strenght that wouldn't get you far since you'll merely ask others for solutions every time, instead of attempting to tackle it, especially with something as trivial as this.

        • We all have our "strenghts". Some people are excellent spellers and can construct a coherent sentence with the correct punctuation and grammar.
What is your strenght? Is it self awareness?

Thanks for the kind words. I'm not unintelligent, I have an Masters degree, just always forget these formulas and thought I would ask those that knew. In the time I saved trying to figure this out I finished my work early and now i'm enjoying a crisp beer. I also helped another member feel good from being able to help another person in need. If that's stupid then sign me up.

      • Lifting a car is also an incredible strength

That's a feat of strength, having the drive, dedication and commitment to training your body to able to do that feat is the real strength.

I think with your math level, it would be safer for you to find an accountant to do your tax.

How do you do business from home without extremely basic mathematic comprehension skills?

If your office is 12.24 square metres, and your entire apartment is 70 square metres, and one train leaves from Sydney's Central Station at 1:30pm travelling north at 82km/h, and another train leaves from Newcastle Train Station travelling south at 47km/h — then how many apples am I holding?

    • +5

Depends on the area of the sun and how much light is refracted from the surface of the earth according to Snell's Law.

      • +2

Let's assume the area of the sun is the product of:

OP's apartment size x Number of apples I'm holding x The Speed of Light (measured in metres per second)

        Solve for apples.

        • +1

          6.85

        • +1

          @TightBottom: I'm getting closer to 2.90 x 10^5 apples.

        • +3

          @TightBottom: I keep coming up with 42.

      • +1

And how close to the speed of light you're travelling.

Bugger - that'll teach me to read things properly.

I see that someone has already put that into the equation.

    • +2

      Obviously the answer is 42.

      • Damn, beat me.

If a crab-and-a-half weigh a pound-and-a-half, but the half-crab weighs as much again as the whole crab, what do half the whole crab and the whole of the half-crab weigh?

      • +1

        If; 1.5 crabs = 1.5 pounds
        1 crab = 1 pound

        Also; if 0.5 crab = 1 pound
        1 crab = 2 pounds

        Hence; 1 = 2

        Congratulations, you've destroyed the universe.

        • +2

          That's incorrect.

        • @Mysterymeat: By definition.

      • 567 grams

    • I do have a proof that 1 = 2. Would that help??

      There's a problem. Newcastle doesn't have a "Train Station", it's a Railway Station - unless you're talking about Newcastle, Wyoming, USA….

More importantly what percentage of time do you work vs recreation.

40hr week working. 168 hours in a week.
40/168*480 = $114.29 you should be able to claim. Work longer, claim more.

Trust me, I'm an internet tax accountant :P

  • Although you've probably already read the ATO rules, I thought you might like to know they have a calculator to simplify such calculations and make sure you don't forget anything: https://www.ato.gov.au/Calculators-and-tools/Host/?anchor=Ho…. It only allows 1 decimal place for area though.

  • My office is 12.24 meters squared and the unit in total is 70 meters squared.

This doesn't mean what you think it means. Meters squared isn't the same as square meters. (12.24 meters)² ≠ 12.24m². The first number is 12.24 x 12.24, or 149.8176m². The second is 70 x 70, or 4900m², close to the size of a football field. This will work out to approximately 0.06 x 480 = $14.68 (instead of $83.93). Correct units of measurement matters!

    • Correct units of measurement may matter, but SO DOES SPELLING!!

Just for the record, my meter is round (YMMV) and may be about 0.2 metres in diameter!! I think some of the newer meters are square, but I'm not sure of their dimensions in metres!! ;-)
