  • Ummm, the picture with the keyboard showing and saying "Not Performance Base" means no keyboard?

    • No, the Performance Base is the new updated keyboard with more powerful GPU and larger battery.
You cannot buy a Surface Book without the keyboard base.

      • +3

Thanks. Seems quite reasonable compared to the iPad Pro whatevers.

        • +1

I was quite shocked when I saw the price of the 12.9. The pencil isn't included either!

        • +2

@eug: not surprised me, look at the latest iphone with quick charge but they dont include quick charger in the box

        • +2

@eug: The Apple tax is included though :)

    • It has the keyboard Gen 1 2015 release, performance base was the refresh model for 2016.. Both have keyboards, just different dedicated graphics… Hope that helps clear it up a little :-) ohh and larger battery thanks Eug..

      • -1

How come the performance base models have such a huge markup? Surely the more powerful battery GPU and battery life cant warrant that kind of premium?

        • Microsoft at play.. :-)

        • +1

How come the performance base models have such a huge markup?

It's not that the performance base models are a lot more expensive, it's really the older models that are cheap. Back when the performance base models just came out, the older models were a lot closer in price.

  • +1

    6th gen….

    • +1

6Th Gen Intel CPU and 1St Gen surfacebook right?

    • +1

      Aren't we on on 8th gens now…?

Where in the listing does it say it's a 6th gen i7?

      • It doesn't say on the listing, if you google the model it has a 6th Gen 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7-6600U processor with Intel HD graphics 520 - with dedicated graphics 940 on this model.. It is the 2015 surface book first release (Gen 1), old stock in the warehouse from Microsoft.. Clearing due to new Surface Book 2 announcement I guess..

      • The product details bit of the listing.

      • +1

        In the product details.
Yes, we are on 8th gen, and importantly, the 8th gen ultralow voltage CPU's ('u') have 4 cores instead of 2 cores. They are way more powerful. Investing in anything <8th gen is not wise.

        • +2

The equivalent 8th gen would cost double, so you could buy two of these if you really want 4 cores. You'll also get double the storage, double the screens, double the keyboard… :)

This is a very good laptop for the price. I would certainly consider it over the newer 8th gen processors for the ~$1,500 saving, if I was using it for tasks that don't require the power of a quad core or 1050.

        • +2

so, when 9th gen are released. you will say investing in anything <9th is not wise?

one thing for sure, it is not wise to buy latest generation of anything. car, mobile, cpu, clothes
wait a bit till price drops. that is a smart people

        • +1

@dragonindespair: I think the point being made is that the 8th generation cpus are (supposedly) a far more substantial leap than your average generation upgrade.

        • @Incrediho: i see. probably right.

        • +2

@dragonindespair: The typical performance jump between generations has been 10-15%, depending on the model. But now, we are seeing a improvements of >50%. An 8th gen i5 blows a 7th gen i7 out of the water. Previously we had to buy the high-performance 'HQ' models to get quad-core performance.

  • great price. Wasn't even in the market for one but…

  • any deals for the Surface Laptop? Seems cheapest from Microsoft store with student discount :(

    • use ebay 20% off on Tech

  • Wish they did this for the 512gb one.
They jacked up the price of the 512gb to 3.6k again

  • +3

Geeze I feel bad. I sold one of these (a warranty replaced brand new one) for $2000 flat yesterday on Gumtree. Poor fella.

    • Are the warranty replaced, brand new or refurbs?

      • They're meant to be refurbs. They look brand-new though.

        • Ok,sweet.. Hopefully they run out of refurbs for this and replace with PB model in the future.. If warranty claim ever required :-)

    • Shoulda been to Ozbargain :D

  • It's not a bad machine, I just wish it had more RAM. 8GB just isn't enough these days. Not sure whether I'll swap it for a Surface Book 2 or go Dell.

    • +1

What do u do on a laptop that requires more than 8gb ram? I game on my desktop with 8gb ram with gta v and witcher 3, never broke a sweat.

      • +1

In a business setting, you'd use 8gb pretty easily. My IDEs will take probably about 6gb if I have multiple projects open. Add to that a few tools, office products and the multiple browsers with a gazillion tabs.

I find games not so much because it's generally the only thing running besides discord and maybe a few tabs on the other monitor.

  • Hi everyone, it's so tempting, but compared to Macbook pro 2017 13 inch no touch bar(8gb ram, 256 SDD, i5 processor)- before was on sale with similar price than this one, which one is better? i understand it's completed different OS but, need some advice…I will use mainly for editing thanks

    • +2

If you're using the Adobe suite or anything that is GPU-accelerated, I would say this is definitely better. This has a discrete GTX965M which is more powerful than the onboard video on the MBP 13.

      • Are you sure that this one has the GTX965M ? Doesn't say on the item description?

        • +2

GTX965M is performance base model, this is GTX940M equivalent to clarify :-)

      • thanks, but i don't think it comes with GTX 965M, in fact, it comes with Intel® Iris™ Plus Graphics 640 from JBHI sie https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/tablets/microsof…, maybe i am wrong.., Yeah, i am using adobe suites software, so really need good one

        • +1

It has both. The tablet part has the Iris, the keyboard has the GTX.

      • +1

965m is the gpu on the performance base. This has an undisclosed gpu with performance close to 940m.

        • so this one is better than the mac i mentioned above??

        • Sorry for the confusion! I remembered them wrongly. It's close to the 940M.

        • @eug: so is it still better than the mac i mentioned? sorry, no idea about GPU 940M, too technical to me…

    • +1

Wait for laptops with 8th gen or better yet the new amd apu. Don't waste money on a dual core specially if you're editing with it.

      Some numbers to consider: https://videocardz.com/73702/amd-launches-ryzen-mobile-7-270…

      • +1

thanks, sorry it is so technical that i still didn't get it. Macbook pro 2017 13 inch no touch bar(8gb ram, 256 SDD, i5 processor 7th generation i believe), is better than this one, or this one is better than the mac, or neither of them are good for my purpose

  • damn cant double dipping with amex offer~ :(

    • What's the AMEX offer?

      • buy from microsoft get cash back.

    • +1

I think the early batches had issues. Mine was from the first batch and I had stability problems. I got it replaced and it's been rock solid.

      • Ahh okay didnt hear that, you'd hope they fixed their issues
I remember Dell XPS laptop HDD had similar issues too but fixed

  • +1

I've got a Surface Pro (2017) i7 8GB for work (have to give back in February), can't decide whether to buy this as good value or wait and buy a surface pro (which I'd likely buy an i5).

Really like my surface pro, anyone got any suggestions/comments

    • +2

Somebody I know just bought this as an upgrade from a Surface Pro 3. Others I know who have the Surface Book really love it.

If you want something more like a laptop this is the one to go for, and if you prefer a tablet this also works great when detached. At this price, this is what I'd recommend.

    • +1
      • SP2017 is much lighter and in a more compact profile - much better than surface book in this regard.
      • SP2017 has much better pen input - it has an upgraded screen designed to work well with the new pen.
      • I like how the SP2017 can be configured into various positions with the kick stand, I use the SP in a 45degree angle underneath my main monitor as a second screen and it is even better than having a full size 24 inch second screen because it is so natural to look up at the main monitor and down at the SP
      • Good points. Though is the better pen sensitivity of any benefit for someone who doesn't do art based work?

        • +1

I use it for marking up PDFs and taking written notes and in this use it is much nicer compared to using the old MS pen. It feels very natural almost like using an actual pen and paper, whereas with the old pen there was noticeable lag which made taking notes a real chore

      • The hinge on SP2017 is brilliant, I use at work with two monitors attached to it. Plus I can take the tablet to meetings.

        Cheers for the reply.

        • I also use it in meetings and find that due to the size, it is much less imposing on the table than having a full size laptop in front of you, but still a good size enough to be useful

  • +1

2 QFF points per dollar through the Qantas Mall. Better than 1% cash back?

    • Sorry 1pt per dollar on eBay, 2pts per dollar on MS Store.

  • How does this compare to the new HP spectre 360 or the HP elitebook X360 ?

  • +2

Confirmed with Microsoft Support no dGPU present on this model.

    • That sucks….lucky I didn't buy one :P

    • +3

You trust Microsoft support? we use these at work they have the 1Gb NVIDIA Graphics..

      https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/surface/devices/surface-book…

      Graphics Surface Book: i5: Intel® HD graphics 520;
      i5/i7: NVIDIA® GeForce® dGPU with 1GB GDDR5 memory
      Surface Book with Performance Base: i7: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 965M 2GB GPU

      This model is the following:
      i7: NVIDIA® GeForce® dGPU with 1GB GDDR5 memory

The Microsoft support rep needs to be retrained.. ;-)

    • Confirmed with Microsoft Support no dGPU present on this model.

How did you describe the model to them?

      • I sent them the Ebay Link.

        • +1

They need to be retrained then. Only the entry-level i5 model did not come with a dGPU. Everything above that, including all the i7 models, come with the dGPU.

If you look at the "Item specifics" part of the ebay listing, the model number is CS5-00004. If you google that model number, all the listings show that it comes with an NVIDIA GPU.

        • @gmail92: Ahh, wasn't aware of that. In any case, only the 16GB/1TB model was available without the dGPU. This model is not that one.

        • +5

          @eug:

It arrived this morning. Can confirm box says Nvidia dGPU.

  • This seller doesn't provide a Tax invoice either with the item or in email. After contacting twice via ebay, I was provided an invoice in plain format text from email id [email protected].

They operate from Singapore and Microsoft Australia has no idea about this seller.

    • I did get the feeling the eBay store wasn't legit…

    • +1

Can anyone who has shopped at Microsoft ebay confirm whether or not you received a GST invoice?

It would be really concerning if you did not get one… it might even mean this is not Australian stock

      • I had 2 orders with this seller and proper invoices weren't provided. However, items seem genuine. Laptop I ordered was shipped from Synnex Australia, Melbourne with delivery slip and no invoice. When contacted Synnex, I was asked to contact seller for invoice.

        • Yeh I had an issue with a Toshiba Radius 12 (new sealed unit) I bought of this store on ebay, they provided a txt format invoice that obides by Australian law had ABN, gst etc and Toshiba fixed laptop under that receipt as the laptop serial from Toshiba was sent to Microsoft Australia and also gave me complementary extended 2yr onsite warranty, was a pleasant suprise..

        • @robzta:

Any chance you (or anyone who has ordered from them) can provide a non-personalied copy of said text invoice?
I need to get it through TRS refund, and wondering if it is legitimate.

        • @gmail92: I did get the TRS refund for the laptop I bought last month. TRS officer in counter was bit confused seeing the invoice and approved it after checking with another officer.

        • @ozzbargainer:

It's a bit funny being a text invoice but it appears legitimate.

        • @ozzbargainer:

Dude, I just got the invoice. WTH! Is this even legit? Is it okay to claim even though it says "ebay" like 10 times on the invoice, has a link to the ebay sale and the formatting of the name/address is weird?

          As in,

          TO:
          (YOUR ADDRESS)

          Dear (YOUR NAME)
Thanks for your order from Microsoft Storefront on eBay

Did TRS knock you back for these things at all? Do I just print the email…. haha :o

        • @maybeamacy:

If you look up the requirements to a tax invoice, you will see it has them (that you excluded in your example).

    • +1

Wait, so this is not actually from Microsoft

      • Maybe not? I bought a Dell from ebay (official store) and when I contacted them about an issue it wasn't actually Dell they were like a distributor or something.

        • Dell eBay store items are shipped from Singapore. However, Microsoft eBay items are shipped from Melbourne which is the same shipping location of the Microsoft website. So if a distributor is handling the Microsoft eBay store, then the same distributor is probably handling items sold on the website.

    • They operate from Singapore and Microsoft Australia has no idea about this seller.

      What makes you say that?

Reason I ask is I have bought a couple of items from both the eBay store and the website. All items have been shipped from Melbourne as per the DHL tracking information.

      • They had this address in the email sent as invoice

Microsoft Regional Sales Corp. 438B Alexandra Road, #04-09/12, Block B, Alexandra Technopark, Singapore, 119968.

I didn't have problem with the product.

        • That same address is on my invoice too. I think Singapore is some sort of center of operations for this part of the world (Don't quote me on that). I say this because when I purchased XBOX live gold membership, my email had a log in entry using a Singapore IP address presumably to add the subscription to my account.

        • @Harshad:

Microsoft for Asia Pacific, which includes Microsoft Australia is based in Singapore. Everything for the region goes through that regional head office.

        • @Ashman247: That explains the reason the invoices have a Singapore address way better than I did.

  • I really wish I had waited but I needed a laptop some months ago, still very happy with my surface pro 4!

  • this or wait for the black friday deals? Very tempted

  • Mmmm, I'd be temped if work wasn't going to get me the performance base Surface Book 2 in November. Great price!

  • This laptop was $400 more last month: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/327005

Feel bad for people who bought that deal >.>

  • I think the deal's expired now.

  • Hi, guys i have ordered this surface book and suppose to be relieved today. I forgot to put voucher code while purchasing because i was using this promotion website first time so i paid $1799 instead of $1529.15. I called ebayAU, they can'y help me until i got my Voucher number which i didn't note down. Is there any chance i can get my voucher code now? or what should i do now to get my extra $270 back.

    • The code was PRESSIE it is an eBay code not PayPal, contact ebay support and explain the situation, happen to a mate once, he called them got it escalated to ebay marketing, said applied a code didn't register and in 5 working days they paid him the difference back into PayPal. Worse case scenario free 30days return with Microsoft, if they don't help you out with the $'z :-)

      • Thanks mate :-)
