Comments

  • Memory upgrades - I would like to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB.

According to this comment from AJW

I believe the generic ram in it is running at 2133, though I picked up a 2400 speed stick which runs fine - though they will run at lower 2133 speed, they didn't have stock of 2133 at the time and was assured it would be fine (which it has been): https://www.ple.com.au/Products/629422/GeIL-8GB-Single-DDR4-…

    • The Dell specifications state:
      Slots: Two UDIMM slots
      Type: DDR4
      Speed: 2400 MHz (65W)
      Configurations supported: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 24GB, and 32GB

      • Funny, my ram is running at 2134hz according to my Memory in the Task Manager (performance) view. Can you confirm your original 8GB is 2400hz speed?

        • I am still waiting for my system to arrive. I will update the speed here once it does.

        • @Dinjay: It is my damn geil stick running at 2133, even though it is 2400…I will google to see if motherboard/bios has a setting to unlock speed..dunno why
RAMN that came with PC was indeed 2400 :)

        • mine is 2400Hz

        • @jcheunga: Is that the 8GB RAM that came installed by default?

Any chance you can post a photo of the parts numbers on the RAM and the M.2 SSD?

        • Thats pretty common. My PC has DDR3 1600 and it reports as 1661.

    • According to the Dell Order Details page, the Item Number for the installed memory is 370-ADJY. From a quick google, the equivalent Product Code is 8G241D, though that seems to be less useful than the Item Number.

Searching on the Dell website, the closest match to that is:
      * Dell Part# 370-ADPS: Dell 8 GB Certified Memory Module - UDIMM 2400MHz , Single Rank, x8 Data Width, Customer Install
      The Dell price is $429.00.

That is a lot more expensive than the $119 that AJW paid.

    • I finally figure out why people seem to be recommending Crucial for the second 8GB RAM stick - Crucial is a consumer brand for Micron which seems to be the maker of the 8GB that is pre-installed in this Dell PC: Micron (MTA)8ATF1G64AZ-2G3H1.

  • SSD upgrade

I would like to upgrade from 128GB M.2 SSD to ~512GB

    The Dell specifications state:
    Interface:
    * SATA 6 Gbps
    * PCIe/NVMe

    Solid-state drive:
    * One M.2 drive (SATA)
    * One M.2 drive (PCIe/NVMe)

    Capacity:
    * SSD Up to 256 GB

    • I am trying to find out if the M.2 slot is limited to 256 GB.

An alternative option is to use a SATA slot as AJW has done.

      • +1

I didn't know otherwise (I don't know what you are referring to in regards to m2 sorry), so yes I installed the SSD via the existing SATA cable when I removed the HDD. Replaced the stock HDD which I intend to reinstall after I pickup a right-angle sata cable - the end of the hdd / ssd is very close to the panel, so you need to use a sata cable with the right/90degree angle on the end to be able to close the case panel correctly. Plenty of power connectors to add the original hdd back, and I remember seeing free sata slots on the motherboard too :)

      • +1

The m.2 won't be limited to 256gb, put whatever capacity you'd like.

It's just saying you can buy it from Dell with up to a 256gb SSD.

        • Do you know why it shows the M.2 drive as both SATA and PCIe/NVMe? Does the one M.2 slot support both types of drives?

        • @Dinjay:

          Probably also supports mSATA drives.

        • +2

@Dinjay: Yes, it's common for M.2 slots to support both SATA and PCIe drives in the same slot. The SATA SSDs are cheaper, but a fair bit slower.

Note that mSATA is a different form factor again, and this motherboard is unlikely to support it.

  • Have you gotten any further information about tracking yet? I received the standard "Order has been marked as shipped" email from eBay but when I log into the Dell tracking page for my order number, it hasn't got any information past confirmed.
It's also estimating a delivery date of 30/11/17 which is obviously ridiculous. Ebay expects it as 3-13 Nov.

    • Mine also only shows as "confirmed" with the est delivery date of 9/11/17.

    • Same.

It is nice how Dell mark it as shipped but that's not the case. I think I lost 4 days after order date before they even processed the order because on day 5, I get an email asking to confirm who the invoice should be made out to (probably because shipped to business address). I replied immediately and shortly after that got ebay/email notification it was on the way.

Mine is noted for delivery on 10/11/17 and current status as "Confirmed".

  • I note in the other deals some people are suggesting to switch out the 2400mhz ram with 3200.

Noted there will be a performance increase, but by how much to justify the cost?

    Anyone know the answer??

    • @scrimshaw suggested here in another post discussing this PC that:

It appears BIOS settings are locked by Dell so you should stick with 2400mhz.
Unless Dell releases a patch that unlocks the BIOS to expose memory speed settings (XMP profile), you don't gain any advantage from buying faster RAM and you risk buying something that won't let you boot.

Where did you read that it's possible to have 3200MHz RAM? Or, more accurately, that's it's possible to run 3200MHz RAM at 3200MHz instead of it running slower?

      • +1

Ahhh - looks like I missed that. What scrimshaw recommends with hardware - one is best to heed.

In regard to your question, it was people just commenting that 3200 seems to be the best option for a ram upgrade - however, as per FabMan reply to one of your questions, probably best to wait for the box to arrive and have a look. Doing a quick google, its highly likely the bios will be locked by Dell as per scrimshaw's comments.

  • ….

  • Shipping

Here are my shipping details as of today.

    Estimated Delivery Date: 8/11/2017
Status: Shipped - In transit to local hub

So far, there's no tracking number.

    • Woohoo - a tracking number assigned now so hopefully it will arrive any day now.

      • Darn no tracking number for me yet, and I got a revised delivery date email for 10 November even though the Dell order expected date is 8 November.
Can I ask what company they're using to ship?

        • The tracking number is for DB Schenker and the Australian departure point (the Dell warehouse?) is Homebush NSW.

  • A note to all - apparently you cannot enable xmp or edit ram speeds, so the ram needs to be 'compatible' - which dell don't list that I could find. However they are supposed to be compatible with Crucial - they have the advertising that their ram works in dell systems. I'm crediting my geil 2400 against some new crucial ram - will update here when I find if it works.
    https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/buy/crucial-8gb-ddr4-2400-mt…

    • I just posted about this a minute ago further up. I'd be careful about what "compatible" means. Your GeIL was compatible in the sense that it didn't crash the system but it may not have matched timing with the Dell RAM.

It would be good to find out the timing of the installed Dell RAM. You may be able to read it off the RAM itself or I think there are software that can figure it out - just make sure you take the Geil RAM out first if you're going with the software option.

Any chance you can post a photo of the parts numbers on the RAM and the M.2 SSD?

    • I can read the image now.

Looks like is the Micron (MTA)8ATF1G64AZ-2G3H1 according to CPU-Z. Here is the specs sheet. According to this (I am still learning), the module is 8GB DDR4 SDRAM UDIMM 2400MHz PC4-2400 with 17-17-17-? timing.

This is different to your cpu-z screenshot which seems to show 1200MHz with 18-17-17-39. I have no idea why that is…..

      • I sometimes find cpu-z confusing for random odd readings. I also saw the dell's prefer the 2400 cl17 crucial so hopefully the one I ordered is compatible…

        • It would be good to know what you find.

Btw, why did you choose SODIMM? They're usually for laptops.

        • Seem discussion with oldhippy below. He is successfully using the normal (non-SODIMM) version of the memory you bought so it looks like you might be on the right track.

But at the same time, the SODIMM module you ordered may not physically fit the Dell mb slot. You may want to quickly research and cancel the order if it doesn't fit.

        • @Dinjay: Yep, it will be returned unopened if I can, what a muppet I am.

        • @AJW: I read somewhere that there are cheap adaptors that fits SODIMM into normal slots - might be an option if you can't return it.

    • Here's a comparison chart of performance of 8ATF1G64AZ-2G3H1.

It looks like the Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK32GX4M2B3000C15 is the best performer in that benchmark.

  • +1

I'll pull the ram out tonight after work, but here is the cpu-z screenshot of stock ram:
    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/83091/53542/stock-ram1…

    • Too small - can't read any of the details in the image.

    • @AJW - Could you please double check the make and model of your RAM?

Both the the Dell Test Tool and CPU-Z is showing my installed memory as Hynix/Hyundai Electronics HMA81GU6AFR8N-UH, not Micron as per your screenshot.

  • +1

    try again, updated

  • +1

    Crucial 8GB DDR4 2400MHz PC4-19200 CL17 288pin Non ECC Desktop Memory RAM 1.2V

This is what I updated my system with and works with no problems. This is with the Ryzen7 system which I decided to get for an extra $400.00, but I presume it will work in the Ryzen5 as it's much the same system.

    • Thanks, that's great to know.

Just to be sure, is this your PC:Inspiron 5675 - a210782au and is this the memory:CT8G4DFS824A you purchased?

Have you confirmed that it's running at 2400MHz?

    • just checking you mean you added that Crucial stick of RAM to your existing 8gb Micron Technology RAM that came stock?

      • Certainly did. I then restarted the system and it said memory updated. Also Dell has a Dell assist app which comes with the system. Ran this as well and it checks your system. My came up as all good and no problems.

      • @jcheunga @oldhippy

Could you please check what is the originally installed RAM in your PC?

Mine is showing up as Hynix/Hyundai Electronics HMA81GU6AFR8N-UH but others system to have a Micron module.

  • 1) That's my system

    2) This is the one I bought https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/263076250461 Managed to pick it up for 106.00 at the time.

    3) Task Manager > Performance says 2400

    • Thanks.

I think that the RAM I linked to - curious why the seller didn't state the model number in the listing.

    • Hi mate,

How is the built in WiFi?, is it good?

      • Yes it’s good!

        • Hi mate thanks for replying.

Gaming wise, it performs well in hitting max/ultra setting in todays games?.

Also this is fairly future-proof- can upgrade without worrying the motherboard not be incompatible with newer parts such as GPU and CPU later down the track?

        • @Polde: I only play PUBG and all my settings are on low so i can see better hahha..but I'm sure it will be alright to play today's games.

FUture proof wise I remember someone saying it's not as good as other build because Dell has certain limitations?? Not sure the details, maybe someone from here can help you.

        • @Polde:

It's a budget PC so look elsewhere if you want top-notch performance. If you're looking for value for money, then this is a good PC.

Yes, you should be able to update the CPU/GPU but note that the BIOS is supposed to be locked so there are limitations. See this thread for further info.

This is the same RAM except it's cheaper and use PREZZY to get 20% off.

thx I have bought one of these as well, should be a nice little boost to this system when using Inventor

  • is the Operating System installed onto the m2 ssd? thx in advance

    • Yes

    • Yes it is, and it loads damn fast.

  • Just tried to install a second SSD in the NVMe slot but there is no screw provided by Dell. Anybody know what size screw you need?

    • I believe it's the M2x3.5 screw according to the SSD replacement instructions in the Owner's Manual.

What do you mean by "tried to install a second SSD in the NVMe slot"?
I haven’t received my PC yet - I thought there was only one M.2 slot with an SSD already installed there. Did you replace the installed M.2 SSD or is there a second M.2 slot?

      • Thanks for the info on the screws. I'll see if I can buy some tomorrow from my local computer store.

Yes there is a second M.2 slot and it's the only one that takes the NVMe SSD. The first M.2 slot which has the 128GB SSD with Windows installed is SATA only. You have about 71 GB free on the 128 SSD after Windows is installed.

You can see the second slot location on that pic you linked me. It's the yellow-ish rectangle above left from the CPU fan.

        • Thanks, didn't realise that there were two slots. Which SSD did you buy?

        • +1

          @Dinjay: A Samsung 512GB 960 Pro M.2 NVMe

        • @Dinjay: is there any benefit by having a bigger SSD?

        • @sauce2k: As usual, it depends…..for instance, I plan to dual boot Windows/Ubuntu plus at least one virtual machine so a larger SSD would make a difference to boot/load times. If you're into games, then installing them on an SSD may make some games load faster. Or if you're too lazy to move your Win apps to the hard drive, then a bigger SSD would help - though that's a bit of a waste.

        • @Dinjay: yeh fair enough..I really just play pubg on it haha..so I might pass

        • @duncthepunkk: I assume you got a good deal. Where'd you buy it, how much?

        • @duncthepunkk:

Did you find the M2x3.5 screw and if so, from where?

Did you use a thermal pad under the SSD?

I bought the same SSD as you (Samsung 512GB 960 Pro M.2 NVMe) and I am finally getting around to installing it. Hopefully I can install Ubuntu on there and dual boot the PC.

        • So far I have tried WITHOUT success:

          • Centrecom - don't sell them/screws
          • Bunnings - smallest is M3
          • Jaycar - smallest M2x8mm, which is too long
          • MSY - don't sell them as they usually come with the motherboard
        • @Dinjay: I used those exact Jaycar screws. They where the only M2 screws I could find anywhere. I used a grinder to take it to halfway (4mm) with a small set of pliers holding the screw. But the main problem with these screws are the head size. They are tiny compared to the screw holding the 128GB SSD that came from Dell and just barley hold the card in place. I got mine to work and have had no problems with it but the whole process was quite a pain to do.

        • @duncthepunkk: Thanks - that does sounds like a major pain :(

I ordered some M2x4 screws and M2 washers from eBay with the hope that I could use the washers to reduce the length to 3.5mm and allow for the small head size even on the ebay screws.

        • I ended up using my pliers' wire-cutter section to cut the Jaycar M2x8mm screws in approx half - it was a lot easier than I expected. I had a little bit of trouble using the cut screw in the M.2 slot due to the jagged edges and crushed thread from the cut, but it worked in the end.

You're right the tiny screw head is a concern so I might try using the washers once they arrive.

        • My order of M2x4mm screws from ebay ($1 for a pack of 25 delivered) arrived after around 3 weeks. I replaced the hacked Jaycar screw with the ebay screw - it fitted well and has a wider head to better hold down the M.2 SSD.

  • Thanks everyone, lots of good info here.
Maybe add it to the OP to make it easier for the time-poor to benefit.

It seems these systems might be shipping with different RAM modules so it may not be a good idea to recommend one set of RAM.

What is the originally installed RAM in your PC?

      • Yeah okay, I believe mine is branded "Hynix", same as the SSD.
I'll check tonight if it's helpful.
Edit: And the RAM on the GPU is Hynix too.

        • Edit: And the RAM on the GPU is Hynix too.

Don't you mean the SSD was Hynix?

The GPU/Video Card should have been AMD Radeon (TM) RX 570.

Btw, have you installed the additional 8GB Crucial RAM module? Because the installed RAM make & model has changed from the Inspiron 5675 PCs that shipped previously, there is no guarantee that the Crucial RAM would continue to work on the latest versions.

        • +1

@Dinjay: No, the RAM on the GPU (the 4GB of RAM) is Hynix brand.
I'm sure of this, because I dumped the bios, changed the RAM timings and then flashed the modified bios onto it. If it weren't hynix, I'd have a brick now lol.

Yes, I did install the 8GB RAM, and it works perfectly.

This machine flies, I didn't know tech had advanced so much in the last 4 years.

Edit: To clarify, it's an AMD Radeon RX570 4GB, and the onboard RAM is made by Hynix.

        • I'm sure of this, because I dumped the bios, changed the RAM timings and then flashed the modified bios onto it

Why did you need to do that? Also, I thought the BIOS was locked and that it wasn't possible to change the timings?

        • @Dinjay:

I thought the BIOS was locked and that it wasn't possible to change the timings?

The Dell bios is locked, yeah. I don't need to touch that. I'm only talking about the RX 570 here. The RX570 has a bios too, which is what I modified.

Why did you need to do that?

          Faster Ethereum mining.

Edit: My original RAM is Micron Technology

  • What are people's thoughts on bumping up to 32GB (2 x 16GB0 would it worth it please?

    • What will you use the PC for?

      • After Effects CC & Premiere Pro CC

        • Well both those applications specify 8GB RAM minimum and 16GB recommended. More RAM may or may not make a noticeable difference - I don't know.

A bigger issue for me is that this is a budget generalist PC. Pimping it too much is like pimping a Corolla to be a Porsche - you may just be better off saving a bit longer and buying a Porsche :)

        • +2

@Dinjay: $1600 (RRP) is not a budget pc imo.
A budget PC is like $500 with a celeron

        • +1

@idonotknowwhy: Yes, you're right. Perhaps I should've said something like "budget generalist workhorse PC" as that's what I plan to use it for.

  • Cheers, thank you so much for the reply.

  • Tracking on these things isn't so great.
My estimated arrival is tomorrow, how accurate is it?

    • +1

Mine arrived on the estimated day. But work's so busy (and I'm wasting time on ozb) so I still haven't had a chance to fire it up :(

      • I think I'll be in the same position as you, but I'll force myself because I want to start mining on it asap.

      • Mine says it will arrive today, but the status page says: "Status: Shipped - In transit to local hub"
Does it go from that, directly to delivered? Or is there some "3-10 business day" courier step next?
        I'm excited lol

        • Did you end up receiving your computer today?
My estimated delivery date is tomorrow by Dells tracking but in the same boat as you with the "In transit to local hub"
          Ebay estimates by Friday…

        • @Ithinkimtheking:

Did you end up receiving your computer today?
          Nope

          Ebay estimates by Friday…

Mine says "Estimated delivery Fri, 17 Nov - Thu, 23 Nov" on ebay

I really hope it's not going to be Monday. I had planned to set it up this weekend. The SSD and RAM will arrive this week.

        • +2

@idonotknowwhy: FWIW - Mine was delivered on the first day of the estimated delivery noted on Ebay and 2 days after the estimated delivery on Dell Order tracking. I agree, their tracking is next to useless with no ability to know if its on board for delivery etc. Luckily I had it delivered to a business address and someone was there to sign for it.

        • @ATD: thanks. This is what I wanted to know :)

This tracking issue will be reflected in my ebay feedback. Dell can do better.

        • I used the Dell/eschenker tracking info and not the ebay estimate. Once the tracking number was assigned, it was pretty much delivered in the next day or two. And yes, there were only two updates - "Local Transport Booked" and then "Local Transport Delivered".
