Having a hard time deciding whether to get one… or wait for the S9?

    • +23

Wait for what exactly? Mobile phones are consumables that keep getting outdated and updated, it's planned obsolescence.

      • Just curious to see what changes they'll be adding to the camera. It's (most likely) a dual camera system, seeing how they added one to the Note8. A better fingerprint scanner location, hopefully one underneath the camera centered, eg. Pixel 2 or maybe a (highly unlikely) under-display finger print sensor. If they do decide to keep the 3.5mm headphone jack? A price possible drop on the Note8 after the release of the S9?

        • +8

You may as well wait for the 10th anniversary S10, meant to be a ripper.

        • +1

I would say that none of those features are a substantial jump in technology that would deter you from enjoying the current specifications. Did the price drop of the Samsung S7 make you go out and get one? Or were you in the exact same predicament that you're in now? Because in 6 months from now, you'll still be umming and ahhing about the same thing.

        • +1

Samsung have recently patented a fingerprint scanner that is apart of the display so it's likely to have a square area at the central bottom of the display that'll be the reader in the next iteration.

        • I would recommend you buy a camera rather than a phone!

        • @jayzorz: This is disappointing news but also good news since I'm optimistic I won't need a new phone for a few years. My next phone will hopefully have a solid state battery also!

        • Maybe you should wait for the S10. Or the S11. I can guarantee it will have the best camera.

      • But the delta is decreasing.

    • +4

      Nah, wait for the SX.

    • +4

      Go for the note 8.

    • +1

If you keep waiting and waiting, you’ll end up with nothing. Spend a good amount on money on something that will last you a long time, that way you don’t always need to buy the latest phone, because there always will be one.

  • +5

waiting for it comes down under $1000, I'll buy it.

    • +1

at $1200, you might as well go on a plan with one of the carriers.

      • May I ask which plan provide a total cost of $1200 that comes with a note8?

        • +1

He means you'll be paying < $1200 for the phone over the plan so you may as well get calls/sms/data included.

          For example: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/337107
          - Total cost of plan $2085
          - Cost of similar plan (but with only 20gb instead of 60gb) by itself $79/month x 24 months = $1896
          - Final cost of phone $2085 - $1896 = $189

And that's as good as you'll get. No chance you'll find a contract with phone + sim for $1200 total.

        • @jzdhgkd: if you guys want i can get it to yous for 1100 which is the cheapest it has been i can also get the samsung book contact me for prices
The stock will be directly from samsung it will take 3-4 day to come :)

    • You failed at sarcasm 101. Ask Chandler Bing!

      • Indeed I did!

I have, however, made a note to reach out to you next time I need some advice on "how to be a master of the bleeding obvious"

        • Lol, Chandler Bing should be on the top of your list for future advice.

I'm having a hard time deciding between this and the Pixel XL. In terms of the camera this has the plus of having 2 x optical zoom.

    • +1

I was considering pixel 2 then I looked at the specifications…does not have expandable memory whereas note 8 has expandable memory.

I'm waiting till it goes under $1000 to make an outright purchase (using byo plan atm don't wanna do a contract)

      • +1

I'm in the same boat as you and I also like the idea of storage expansion. Plus Samsung are hard to break.

        • This is very true, dropped my note 5 at least 20 times and no cracked screen yet lol

        • @HereYeeHereYee: dropped mine 3 times, opposite results!

        • @Soluble: Otter Box is great investment, instead of showing off (with a cracked screen).
Think how many iPhones 'signature edition'(cracked screens) are there.

      • -2

Just a note… If you want expandable memory, you'd need the dual sim version and use the second sim slot for your sd card.

I don't think AU stock has dual sim

        • +5

Single SIM model: one nano SIM and one microSD slot (can hold a microSD card up to 256GB)
Dual SIM model: one nano SIM and one Hybrid slot (can hold a microSD card up to 256GB or a nano SIM card)

Both versions will allow you to have the expandable memory. Just the international dual sim phone can hold another sim card in the hybrid slot instead of a sd card.

        • @truongster: 256GB tested at time of release. I tried over the specified max mem in the past & worked. 400GB should work, but too expensive now.

        • +1

@truongster: ohh and I was holding off from local stock cause of my misinformation… Silly me

        • @truongster: Is there any downside to the Dual SIM model? Besides being a grey import and possible warranty issues.

  • A bargain compared to the iPhone X

    • Anything is a bargain compared to the iPhone X

    i thought samsungs were cheap?

    • -6

They are having grandiose dreams that they are in the same league as Apple. Usually market will adjust and it will come down to Samsung friendly $799.99 in a few months after release.

  • +1

If you want to buy Android, buy cheaper ones, such as Huwaei or Xiaomi.
I had note 4, and it went out of function two times badly.

    • +1

My Note 4 is still the Great after 3 years & many drops. Had > 200 apps when it started to slow down.
Got Note 8, but I still like Note 4 & flat screen for the stylus.
I would not use anything without SD card & Stylus - it a productivity smartphone.

  • It'll be interesting to see if anyone will beat this price.

  • i'd be happy if grey market reduced in price to low $900s - dont wanna wait till Black Friday, but i assume no real Note 8 sales until there is real supply of the iPhone X.

  • Interesting that Bing Lee has dropped the note 8 price on eBay to 1299. Wonder if a price cut is incoming to draw people away from the iPhone X?

  • Feels good to buy iPhone X

  • who the hell spends this much for a phone?

    • +1

Problem is these high end phones have as much power as a laptop and more power than our old PCs lol

  • Why are people spending so much on a phone??

If a phone is used for, say, 2 years, that's approx. $600 per year only for the phone.

    Crazy.

    • +1

To be fair you do use it every single day, I trade alt coins on mine so it pays itself back ;)

      • that's still a lot of money for facebook and instagram though.

  • Can we claim export tax on this at airport?

  • reading on xda forums the note8 battery life could barely make it through 3hours of on screen, significantly less than the s8 plus of 5hours on screen.

    • You can customise/optimise (resolution/cpu/transitions…) for productive use. When tested down to 2% it was >48 hours with average use. Then 1h 38m until full fast charge.

    • Mine regularly makes it over 5hrs SOT

      The phone is a beast.

  • I still think the $1199 pre order deal was better. Was AU stock and came with free wireless charger and 12 months free screen assure.

    • Proved it. After 3 years with Note4, many drops & still in perfect condition, I dropped Note8(running) with temp slim case while waiting for better one.
Lucky I have screen assure. I immediately bought Otter Box & keep the other good one as spare.
The wireless is good but $119 is overvalued. If they combined wireless with DeX maybe.
