Best Microwave for Price

Looking for a decent microwave for the $$$ previously had a Panasonic NN-SF550W which was absolute garbage. Took 40s to heat up my infants bottles to warm. Wondering what other people use and can recommend :) Would probably prefer 1000w

From what Ive read Sharp seems to make decent microwaves

  • I Have a similar experience with the Panasonics, top of the line, MAde in Japan model. Takes forever to heat stuff and heats unevenly too. My shitty microwave at work that was probably $100 shoots out cosmic rays compared to the Panasonic.

    • Reading all of the reviews online the panasonic is the worst rap

Any microwave will do. For many tasks like this I actually prefer a manual microwave with a dial. There is then no need for buttons. Just turn the dial and it starts. Saves about 2 seconds over pressing 4, 0, power, 5, 0 and then start to get the liquid to heat at 50% of output power. Your microwave is a 1,000 Watt Microwave as it only takes about 20 seconds at full power to "warm" 125 millilitres of fluid (half cup) at room temperature in that time. If the liquid has come from a very cold fridge then it should be removed after 20 seconds and stirred/shaken and microwaved for a further 10 seconds each time until warm enough for use.

So…for me…a 20 Litre 700 Watt Manual Microwave for $80 would be just fine.

    • That's a good point I might have a look at this when looking at them. Another thing I found irritating is the door on mine as its loud to close sometimes waking my son

      • I hate that too. I push the close door button whilst closing the door to reduce the sound of the door closing.

      • Kmart ones are fine, we use them in a commercial setting. They last 1-2 years of heavy use usually, keep in mind we flog them to death with 2 sessions of 2-3 hours almost continuous use (no duty cycles around here, move along people)

Take a bottle or 5 with you to the store and try the setup ones.

    • For many tasks like this I actually prefer a manual microwave with a dial.

There's many examples of adding computers and buttons to things that not only don't need them but become more inconvenient to use because of it … one of these examples is replacing a dial with a keypad!

Nah, it would melt the plastic bottle.

  • Target microwave

  • I’ve noticed that the newer ones have a cooling cycle which seem noisy and confusing compared to our 20 year old Panasonic. Confusing because I can’t tell when the cooking has finished. Can’t seem to find a 32 litre without a cooling cycle.

    • Yeah the Panasonic did that was a pain in the butt

  • You did say best for price, so probably worth checking out Big W's Contempo Medium $89. Even got a mention in Choice 2016 (Credit: fryandlaurie's upload of Choice 2016 article)

Their Large is $99, and Compact is $48 - the one I have. Used for more than 1.5 yrs, very happy so far. To set time quickly, each button press adds 30 secs.

Not sure if it will heat infant's bottle quicker for you … just from a value for money perspective, so worth you checking it out for yourself. Hope this helps.

    • Big W says the compact version is 18L which is fine, but there's no mention of the volume capacity for the large one.. =/

      • I did but also want value for money. As my wife and I have a newborn it needs to work well bottles ect. I absolutely hated the panasonic I had so was wondering if anyone had a cheap option and able to actually heat up stuff

      • You are right - info not given for large one. Best to drop by a BIG W to check - also gives a better idea of the actual feel when opening/closing, the display etc.

  • My current microwave is a stainless steel 27 litre Lg that I got off eBay for 99cents 5 years ago. Excellent machine. Heats well.

  • We went with choice top recommendation - Sharp R330 from good guys. Really happy with it.
Got it about month ago in 20% off ebay sale for about $140 for stainless steel version.
Seems like most 330s are in GGs clearance at moment

    • I liked the sharp but some of them had really bad reviews

  • Check out the Breville "quick touch" range. Had ours for a couple of years now - really good. Only two very minor complaints - the print on the main power button has worn off (no issue as it's obvious what it is for), and I've heard some owners say they have found rust inside eventually (no problem with ours, but if it steams up inside after heating something I tend to leave the door open for a minute or two to let it escape.

From a use perspective, is great. Even cooking. 'Smart' reheating that actually works. Even quick buttons for things like popcorn and melting butter that again actually work.

RRP Was pretty high, but can get them on special for around the $300 mark.

  • I bought a Samsung 24 years ago and it still works fine. I heard a rumour that they don't make things like they used to, but dunno if it's true. The weird thing is that it doesn't look dated, and looks just as 'modern' as many microwaves on the market today. Two things I should say: I suspect it takes a little longer these days to warm things than it used to, but it wouldn't be by much; and the light blew about 18 months ago, but that suits me because I like to leave the door slightly open after use so that any condensation dries quickly, and it's costing zilch in electricity. I've seen microwaves that the insides look like the rusted hull of a derelict trawler.

    • That's insane my panasonic didnt even last two years :(

So with my son needing bottles warmed i went out and bought the samsung ME6124ST. So hopefully this one does me justice. Cooked popcorn in it and it did it well so hopes are high at the moment
