    • Login to the Amex website and check your offers.

      • ahh cool

looks like it was on the cancelled card

      • what if the card is not directly with AMEX where can we check if the offer is saved?

        • Then in future, setup a different email alias for each AMEX. This is what I do.
          amex1@<mydomain>, amex2@<mydomain>, amex3@<mydomain>

It's also helpful towards the end of a shop-small month, because I can look at the "Thanks for shopping small" emails associated with each alias to know which shops I can visit again.

Always use the same amex for the same email address (I just remember which Amex I got first, second, third).

Edit: Might be less of an issue in the near future, as the stupid bank-amexes are being phased out.

        • @idonotknowwhy: The registration emails list the last few digits of the card number, so it's just as easy to check that without using multiple email addresses.

That being said, I keep track of my shop small spends in a note in Google Keep.

Amex took back the credit! Sigh

    • +1

      Context? Was your purchase refunded?

      • Bought egc and then rejected. Amex credit received days ago and then debited back

        • +1

          Mate, didn't I warn people?
          The email said they're checking

        • @idonotknowwhy: His purchase was rejected and the payment was refunded. That's why the credit was reversed, not because he purchased a gift card.

I purchased a gift card in store, got the credit, but then had to return the card for a refund because it wasn't acitived correctly. I did then spend $2260 on the card, so I'm entitled the credit anyway, but was waiting to see if it would be reversed due to the refund. It wasn't.

        • @puffinfresh:
I only know I can only check physical GC balance in store.
Do you know how to check HN physical GC balance online?

        • @JLQC5899:
          Thanks.

        • Have you made any further $400 purchases using the same card and still got a $100 credit later?

  • Sorry, this is a bit OT but I know the audience to this thread is large and some of you will be able to speak from experience. =)

Do the fee-free AMEX cards (Essentials, QATNAS Discovery, Velocity Escape, Low-rate) also qualify for these statement credit offers ?

    • Yes. I have the Velocity Escape and it gets more offers than the bank-card versions.

    • Yes. I have both paid Amex-Platinum Reserve, and Amex-Qantas-Discovery (no fee) cards - both qualify for pretty much all these amex offers.

  • PS4 Pro for $369 after cashback if anyone is waiting to buy one….

I've got multiple credit reversed due to refunds. pretty good system this year.

    • +1

or good from their point of view

  • +1

If Amex takes back the credit, is the promo still active? i.e. can you still go in store and buy something to get the credit?

    • +1

      Yes.

      • Hey mate, you seem to have lots of experience with having your $400 refunded (and the $100 credit taken away), with a successive $400 purchase triggering a $100 credit.
I've done this and still waiting for the $100 credit to come through, how long did you have to wait for yours to come through?

        • +1

Two day after the qualifying transaction was made.

        • @PissLUR: Thanks mate. And just like that, the $100 credit landed in my account this morning :)

  • So you cannot use your Australian bank branded AMEX card for HN online checkout as they use AMEX Express Checkout, which requires you to log into an AMEX account, which requires you to have an AMEX AMEX card (as opposed to an Australian bank branded AMEX card). FFS.

    • there is no need to use AMEX Express Checkout.

      • Right you are the AMEX logo appears under "Credit Card".

  • +2

I love how you get the confirmation email within literally a second or two of hitting confirm, long before whoever you bought something through actually gives you confirmation of the order.

  • egift cards work in $200 transactions at a time (wait until each is approved). Just make sure to write a message in the "message" box, so their system doesn't reject you for being a bot.

  • Your transaction got rejected yet?

  • Harvey Norman Auburn NSW will let you split payment, however will check that the card is in your home. Paid for half an iPad mini because the other card I was gonna use wasn't in my name …

    • +4

Is the store manager going to visit your home for the other card?

      • Hahaha. I gotta drag my cousin with me to finalise the other half …

      • +2

omg. I just realised that I wrote home instead of name. 😓

Harvey Norman Auburn will check to see if the cards are in your name. Should have used the one that wasn't in my name to pay first because they didn't check that one …

  • +3

So finalised my iPad mini payment at the Auburn store today (they didn't check my cousin's card to see if it really belonged to her) and before I did, I saw this sign regarding the AMEX offer 😂 https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/18431/54734/imag3647.j…

    • +1

      Lol funny

      Amex can't differentiate between transactions

      Big fail Gerry

    • Have you got your $100 credit yet? How long does it take?

      • Yep. About five days.

  • I just brought 2 x $200 e-Gift card online and received the confirmation email within a second. Now the transaction is approved and waiting the $100 credit. Does the Amex check the transaction and take away the $100 later?

    • +2

They don't know at all what you bought. Literally, all they see in their system is a charge request:

      • For exactly $400

      • Coming from the HN online merchant account (their corporate office backend payment system)

      • A bunch of authorisation codes and merchant IDs (grab any physical receipt that you get from a physical merchant terminal and you'll see things like AID, Merchant ID, Authorisation Reference etc), these are just backend numbers

There is no information contained in there that can identify the actual item(s) being bought. I don't have a very in-depth understanding of merchant accounts and payment terminals etc, but from investing hours upon hours of research into AmEx systems, I can confidently say that what I've said above is a rough account of what happens behind the scenes.

More than happy to be corrected by someone in the industry or someone who has more experience in these matters.

      • If they had access, it would be an invasion of privacy.

What if you bought some birth control pills and AMEX found out and sent emails or letters to your home ( when you live at home ) and your parents find out because they are religious and taking birth control is bad.

      • +2

The system can notify the credit card company if it is a cash equivalent transaction, however most gift cards are treated as a purchase.

        • I thought people were doing the 2 x $200 HN transactions to later have them revoked.

I'm just weighing up doing this.
          Not sure what to do…

  • -4

Whats HNs refund policy like? I'm thinking a way around this could be to purchase an iPad or similar priced item at around the $400. Wait for the $100 AMEX rebate, them return after Christmas claiming a double up?

    • Won’t refund that easily due to change of mind I believe. Also they might take the credit back if you refund at the same store you purchased it from …

      • +1

I'll let you all know how it goes. Worked with Cotton on refunds.

  • I had 6x these offers saved to all my Amex cards.
Held off on cashing them in as HN have been not-so-nice when people tried to buy gift cards with Amex.

Now that the 'hype' has died down and HN are easier to deal with, I went in-store and bought 6x $400 HN vouchers.
Immediately received emails from Amex offers, and 2 days later now : 6x$100 refunds from Amex.
    Effectively $600 free.

Will be putting the $2400 to a new TV or fridge in the new year.

If anyone hasn't used their deals yet, you might want to try the giftcard route in-store.

    • which store? any prepaid visa giftcard?

      • HN Rundle mall, Adelaide.
No visa cards, just HN gift cards

  • +1

Ended up buying a Vornado 660, Breville toastie maker and compact juicer, Remington hair dryer and men's shaver with this deal. Not as good as last year's $300 get $100, but still great offer.

  • hey guys, sorry for the noob question. But my sister has the David Jones' AMEX, can I borrow hers to qualify for the deal? Or do you have to register specifically for HN's AMEX?

    • +1

Harvey Norman doesn't have its own AMEX card. You can register any AMEX card such as the DJs AMEX, however registrations were capped ages ago, so you can't take advantage of the offer.

  • FWIW, I bought Apple Watch last week no problems. Got the statement credit.

Today we went to get a price difference as we purchased <7 days ago and it went down in price since (a whopping $12 savings…) so hopefully all good on the card as it is >$400 still. Will get the gst refund at the airport based on original amount.

  • Just wondering if we can purchase prepaid Visa card using e-gift cards…. Maybe next yr?

  • +1

So what's the final vote? Are credits put on people's accounts for buying apple products being reclaimed?

    • +2

No. I bought an iPad mini 4 with two AMEX cards and got the credit on both.

      • +3

Awesome. Thanks a lot for the lightning fast response.

    • +1

AmEx has no idea what you bought, whether it's Apple or Orange. So people get the credit regardless of the exception in the terms of the offer :)
I bought an iPad and got the statement credit.

  • +1

So it’s nearly all over, for this year. Did anyone who purchased HN gift cards online not have their orders cancelled and how did people go that bought their gift cards in store. Also, I was in store today and having a bit of a snoop around to see if there were any Visa gift cards hidden anywhere and it occurred to me that this story of the epay machines being disabled is crap as they have a heap of differnt cards such as iTunes, PlayStation etc and the epay machines are activate them.

    • +1

They removed the ability to do visa cards from the ePay machines.

  • So if I manage to purchase $400 of HN gift cards tomorrow instore theres no reason to say the credit will get reversed?

    • +2

      Yes.

  • Went to Harvey norman today. The sales said they no longer sell those visa card.

    Is that true?

  • So buying egift cards is still working for the cashback

Cant take advantage of the deal currently as much as i would have liked

  • Dont recommend trying to buy egift cards. Just tried to buy $400 and received an email that ' It is currently being reviewed by our online team.' so will probably be rejected and I wont be able to use the offer in time when I get my credits back.

    • Sorry to hear
      And thanks for the post

    • Did you receive the eGift Cards?

      • No it's stuck at "confirmation". Looks like they've implemented a manual step due to the amex deal.

  • mmmmm cannot see anything to buy and not sure I want a HN GC……..

    • Nokia 8 - $497 after the Statement Credit ;)

  • Going to get the gift cards later today.

    • I thought about buying gift cards but they'll probably have a better amex offer next year if I do.

      • Got the AMEX checking system email after gift card purchase in store……will it be 48hrs approved?

  • Purchased a coffee machine for the wife and haven't got the email yet? In the past it has been instant. Has anyone else had significant delays in receiving the email?

    • Did you check if it is in the saved offer. One of my cards which I had saved but somehow disappeared from the saved offers. This is happened to one of the Nando offer.

      • I just checked and the email was under spam….anyway it did come through around the time I purchased so it was immediate.

  • Anyone had success buying vpay vouchers? I tried a few stores, one said they don't do them anymore, next one said they do but not on amex and the last one scanned the barcode the machine prints only for the computer to say it is an inactive product.

    • I think the ePay machine to process the vpay vouchers has been deactivated, so it is not possible to buy vpay vouchers. I bet it will be active again on 1/1/2018. Maybe try buying HN GC in $200 or $100 in multiple store or trip.

  • Successfully split a purchase on two cards with the AMEX offer this afternoon at the Moore Park store.

  • I wonder if the vpay cards will suddenly become available

  • Online order rejected before Xmas but HN still charged my credit card.
No refund was made to my account as of today.

  • I bought a printer and a headphone but in separate order ( but total over 400) and I've received the 100 credits back into my account

But now the printer is on back order without further time frame. I would like to cancel the printer and go get one other place ( big w is doing 19 dollars)

Will the 100 dollars be taken away from me? Because of the refund?

    • Try and get the refund to a different card

      • I submitted a cancellation and said to refund to another card via chat online. The guy said no problem. Then now when it has been processed it says will be refunded to the same card ( aka offer Amex card) and can't redirect to another card or bank. Now I'm worried I will get reversed the 100 credit :(

        • +3

They will never refund to another card, it's an anti money laundering precaution.

        • you could be lucky as the Amex deal has now ended.

I would be surprised if their system is configured to revert transactions on expired deals.

Let us know how you go
