I cancelled my NRMA membership a few years ago after having it for over a decade. If you keep your car in good mechanical order, have a basic knowledge of how to jump start, clutch start and change a tyre, you don't need it.

I called them once when I was on my Ps because I was too embarrassed to call my old man as I left my lights on and needed a jump.

The money you save by not using them will pay for the tow truck they barely cover anyway.

And a lot of dealers, insurance agencies and service centres now have "bundled" roadside assistance when you are a customer. Although if you call them NRMA will most probably come out haha.

Yeah thats what we do with Youi… I think we get 2 free callouts per year and have cancelled our NRMA (still have the free shares we got years ago though).

Depends on your situation. For a negligible cost it is peace of mind that your partner and kids aren't going to be stranded somewhere should something happen. If you are elderly and dont have the physical capacity to change a tire, it might also be worthwhile.

    • Same here, but instead of drop out I pay for the lowest membership which got the discount Movie tickets, I recall it's $35 per annual. Used the saved money for the jump starter like this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/257543

Since majority of cars now are automatic, it wll take most, a long time to clutch start their car…..

    • Whilst I'd largely agree, there are some instance where they can still be very useful. Only a couple of weeks ago my tyre went. Now, I work on my car all the time, it only ever goes to a mechanic to get registration done, otherwise any other changes (and there have been maaaany) I've done. What I didn't count on was the last tyre place I used rattling on the wheels so hard. I couldn't budge them with the breaker bar in my car, and the NRMA guy had no luck with his rattle gun either. Thankfully, using some 2m+ long bar and the force that induces a hernia managed to undo them.

TL;DR: Roadside Assistance can still be very useful, and for $100 or so a year, I'd prefer to have the peace of mind knowing that someone can bail me out of a sticky situation.

  • Not really much assistance.

  • I use this one here

Have you had to call them out? Just wondering what the service is like.

      • Yes I have once. Called them out to change my flat tyre cos I was too hungover to do it myself. Can't complain.

        • That's good (not hangover, lol).

  • I just tried the NRMA page & it came up with an error message 🙄

    • login to your account and try again, worked for me after i logged in

      • I don't have an account with them.
