    Not all USB type C cables are created equal. If the cable is not made to spec/standard, it could possibly damage your devices.

    One of Google's engineers has tested a number of cables, see article here: https://www.theverge.com/2015/11/5/9674462/usb-type-c-google…

    His recommended USB type A to USB type C cables: https://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/KF89JCHI0KT4/ref…

    • Yeah, I would stick to the branded ones. Xiaomi is good, even their type-C converter is certified. Rock is also good (bought one of those from Gearbest, very solid cable which works well).

        I personally bought these two cables:

        1m USB type A to USB type C cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016CYJCRE/ref=od_aui_deta…
        2m USB type A to USB type C cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0197WDHF6/ref=od_aui_deta…

        I had a dig through the recommended list and found these cables based on solid construction, braided cable for strength/durability, and ships to Australia. I'm very happy with the quality, and the reassurance the cables are built to specification.

        Micro-usb cables had a much simpler specification, whereas USB type C are more complex with devices that may require much higher voltages/current. It needs to be built using the correct resistors etc. to ensure that it negotiates a safe charging voltage/current with the charger.

          So you recommendation is to not get these zapals cables?

        • @Blitzfx:

          Personally I would not risk damaging any of my devices with a cheap cable that may not be built to the USB type C specifications. I'd spend a few extra dollars and get one that Benson Leung (Google engineer I mentioned in my earlier post) has tested and has verified is up to spec.

        • @gadget guy:
          Some of them are 50x the price. Do you think because of the exposure Benson has given them, they've pushed the price up?

        • +1

          @Blitzfx:

          I don't think sellers have jacked up their prices. If you have a look at that list, some prices have actually come down 25-33% since they were originally reviewed.

          His recommended USB type A to USB type C cables: https://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/KF89JCHI0KT4/ref…

          Admittedly the price difference between this Zapals deal and one of the Benson approved cables is still a fair bit, $0.39 vs $15.54 ($8.14 + $7.40 delivery). However, I would personally prefer to spend a bit more on a quality cable that I am confident won't damage my device. In my eyes a few dollars saving isn't worth the risk if a poorly made cable could damage my phone.

          Others may see it differently, but each to their own. If you're not fussed, feel free to buy the Zapals cable and let us know how it compares to the cable that came with your phone.

          @gadget guy:
          I only have a game controller that uses USB C in the home. Still not gonna risk it.

          Probably just get the Xiaomi https://www.gearbest.com/samsung-cables-adapters/pp_265428.h…

      Ah, nice one.

      I was literally just about to order but I suppose I might as well hold off then.

      Thanks for sharing.

  • thanks got one. hope i dont get electrocuted / burn my house down.

    • She'll be right ;)

    • Just use it to charge your phone at work. Saves the power bill too.

      • And if work place burned down? No jobs…

    But seriously don't buy this. Bought few from zapal, their quality is below rubbish.
    If you have type c device I think you can afford $7 for good cable. Blitzwolf xiaomi rick etc.

  • Generally, USB-C to USB-A cables have slightly less risk (in terms of voltage/current) compared to USB-C to USB-C cables. Part of the reason is because USB-PD is essentially disabled when it comes to USB-C to USB-A cables.

    However, the biggest issue with these no name brand cables or lesser known brand cables is reliability. I bought some cables from Amazon (Benson approved ones). There is a big variation in quality. You certainly need to be careful with USB-C to USB-C and USB-C USB 3.0/3.1/HDMI/DisplayPort type cables.

  • I ordered one. Then realised I already ordered the same from Zapal at a lower price previous month (which has not arrived yet)…

    I use a decent cable most the time but I like to have a few cheap spares floating around as backups, one in the glovebox of each car, backpack, and such…

  • +1

    Benson approved? Probably not.

    41 cents…not too bad for emergency backup, ordered one with thanks.
