  • What's the purpose of these ? Is it so you don't have to groom your horse much ? Only asking as I grew up on a cattle/sheep property and we never used them - just groomed our horses regularly.

The one's I've seen in hot days (well over 30C) in open paddocks wearing these I've felt sorry for. Must be hot as hell with them on.

    • I've always assumed that darker coloured horses absorb less heat dressed in white and with breathable material. Keeping them cleaner is a bonus. Could be wrong though.

It's so your horse can show their gang colors.

    • I always wonder who was applying coats to horses to ensure their survival before humans came along

      • Horses just lived in places more suitable, rather than being fenced into harsh environments.

          Like caves?

    • What's the purpose of these?

      Equine dressage.

    • I don't rug my horses any more. Too much work and too many problems. They get itchy, put holes in them, get caught up in fences etc. Rugs would be lucky to last a year.

If you don't rug them, their fur gets longer to cope with winter. If you want to ride during winter this can be a problem, and it takes ages to get the mud out with brushing etc before saddling them. You can't saddle them if they have mud all over them.

Their fur is normally kept short for riding, so you make a choice. You can't clip your horse in winter.

Some people just think they need to rug even if they are not being ridden. They don't, unless you have young thoroughbreds maybe. Thoroughbreds are skinny and don't put on weight easily. No rug = more feeding to replace the energy they burn keeping warm.

      Horses are complicated.
