LG G6 (H870DS) Vs LG V20

Specs are here - https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8238&idPhone2…

Has anyone been in this situation of choice?

I've been waiting for some time now for a LG G6 to go on sale (H870DS i.e. non-Au phone). To the point that I am now considering the V20 (H990DS).

There is typically $100 difference between the two models (~$550 vs $440).

Ram is the same.
Processor is slightly in the G6's favour.
G6 is slightly smaller which is a plus
V20 has removable battery which is a plus
G6 has the better resolution screen.
Camera on the V20 is surprisingly better

So hard to pick.

Thoughts?

V20 has a second (always on) screen and infrared port, if you need a universal remote control always with you.

    • I just youtubed the second screen thing. Jesus that's cool.

I feel that the second screen wouldn't provide much functionality and would effectively create a larger top bezel. It can be used as a "tray" for commonly used apps but personally, I don't see much appeal.

      • It is cool. My son has one, his biggest gripe about the phone is the second screen, the light from it bleeds into the main screen. He says it's really noticeable at night.

Phone itself, he's had since they first realeased last year, no problems with it, still going strong and it gets used all day every day.
Paid full price back then , around $1100. So $440 is a bargain.
I myself ( and so would my son) go for the G6 just because it's a newer model.

  • Any common issues with either of these phones?

The V20 has the boot loop issue which seams to be relatively easily fixed. Anything else?

The V20 dimension is about 16% bigger than the G6 but with the same display size at 5.7"

  • Apparently the audio mic output of the V20 is orders of magnitude better than the G6. The more I look into this, the more I favour the V20.

Or actually, my old Oneplus X, which has a screen that is way too expensive to fix :(

I had a V20 I recently got rid off - great phone hardware wise but it's let down by bad software (at least in my experience). Can't comment on the G6.

    • Can you elaborate on what you mean by bad software?
Its a standard Android that you load apps onto is it not?

My v20 would always gradually slow down in performance to the point of being infuriating to use. A factory reset would fix it but it would eventually end up the same way. When I looked around on forums not everyone has had this experience though.

In the same boat. Only thing holding me back from buying a V20 is the possibility of bootloops requiring a painful RMA and that the G6 is damn sexy.

Sons v20 is a year old, no boot loop problems for him.
He is heavy phone user too.

If you don't plan to take a phone with you to the shower, then V20 it is.

V20 owner here (previously owned Nexus 5, 4 & Viewty), great phone. So far so good, touch wood. It's kinda waterproof (maybe), spilled an OJ on it last month, and its still alive. But dont take my word for it, maybe I'm just lucky

Can't comment on the V20 but I've got the G6. Got it as a Kogan replacement from my 6P which I absolutely loved. Have been pretty impressed/surprised with it so far. It's pretty hard to fault really, does everything well, no annoying little things that you really want to change. My rear camera broke when I had it in my pocket under a house but I assume that's due to just being unlucky and getting in between the case ( camera still works and looks good which is weird)

I thought the waterproof thing has always been a bit of a gimmick but I've found myself using it in the shower to listen to music etc. Can be a bit average and sometimes brings up the OK Google but not often.

Not sure what you're after but it seems to be a pretty decent phone all around. Hope that helps a bit.

  • What I'm trying to find is the best 'bang for buck' phone out of these two (aren't we all) with an emphasis on performance. To effectively future proof the phone as much as possible (i.e. keep the phone as long as possible before it gets slowed down by newer apps).

So this means a focus on RAM and processing power. The phones are pretty much the same in this aspect. So I'm just trying to explore what the big differences are.

I'm swaying towards the V20. Maybe I should go to a shop and see how the phones feel like.

I am in the same boat. Have you checked them out in person? Some reports are saying g6 is better than s8 when it comes to multiprocessing(?), but I am more fond of v20 somehow. It is cheaper and not much different from g6 spec wise.

    • "It is cheaper and not much different from g6 spec wise."
This is the issue I'm trying to grapple with. I don't mind paying the extra $100, but I'm just not sure what I'm getting (apart from a few Hz of processing power).

Hmmmm, I think I might have to trawl youtube extensively to make up my mind.

If anyone sees either of these phones, a heads up in here would be great!

Were you looking at non-quad dac G6? I was asking Hardly Normal to price match JB hifi on the 64gb quad dac one, and split payment onto two card so that I can take advantage of the AMEX offer but they can't split it, which makes it $599 after the AMEX $100 off.

        I guess with $150 difference, I'd rather have V20.

        • The price difference was in reference to the typical best deals on OZBargain. I'm using an old iphone in the meantime (which seriously sucks).

As per the original link in my first post:

          V20 - Quad-core (2x2.15 GHz Kryo & 2x1.6 GHz Kryo): MSM8996 Snapdragon 820
          G6 - Quad-core (2x2.35 GHz Kryo & 2x1.6 GHz Kryo): MSM8996 Snapdragon 821

Almost the same. But not sure what the actual reality is (i.e. how they actually perform in the real world).

        • @datzed: Hmm.. I was interested in 64GB only if I were to buy G6. So it has two versions - 64GB Quad Dac and the other is 32GB non-quad dac stock which can be bought low $500s apparently, which I'm not interested. As the ebay code expires today, I may pull a trigger on v20.

  • So I reckon I'll be going the LG G6 based on the size alone. But jesus they are just not going on special anymore. I've seen old ozbargain posts for the G6 H870DS @ $~460! But nothing for months!

  • So apparently after doing some reading, this phone is likely to go back to the sub-$500 specials in early 2018. I'll be holding out until then to see what happens. Current best deal is at $600.

  • What have you decided? The camera on the S6 just broke so I'm looking for a fill in phone until the S9 comes out… I was thinking of the G6 but hadn't considered the V20

    • Havent bought anything yet. Currently trying to work out LG G6 vs Moto G5s Plus (which is some $200 cheaper but not all that much worse).
As the upcoming LG G7 is due for release in Jan 2018, I'll wait till then to see if there are any decent specials on the G6 then. If not, I'll go the Moto.

FYI the latest G6 deal is here (and not all that cheap IMHO, although it is AU stock)https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/352485

  • Bootloop is common across both? I loved my G4 until it bootlooped and eventually became useless, other inconvenience aside. It is difficult for me to trust LG phones now after that experience. What I hated more was that LG didn't even bother to withdraw those phones from the market (without consumers crying about it) and replace them with others.

  • Bit of an eye opener

    https://youtu.be/6FZIxp2vzSU

Especially when you consider the $150-$200 in saving based on current 'best deal' prices

H870K AU Stock for $500. Deal or nah?

    • H870DS comes with Hi-Fi DAC and dual sim, which I found great. Not sure about H870K, but it may have wireless charging.

  • EDIT: Nevermind

  • Just an FYI that the LG G6 is available for $480 using code PAYBACK from dwi-digital-cameras ebay

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BRAND-NEW-LG-G6-H870DS-64GB-DUAL…

I personally don't think its worth this price and will wait until it drops further.
