Just brought this phone a month or two back for $550 to replace a broken OnePlus 3 and Nexus 5X. A little annoyed I didn't pay extra and go for the latest oneplus, or alike.

Has a great audio system (Internal DAC/decent amp) the camera is hands down amazing, I almost prefer it over digital cameras the same price. Dual SIM is always a great feature.

But, it comes with a locked bootloader, some very chunky man-ware (manufacturer software), battery isn't the best and it can be a little fiddly with the fingerprint reader on the back also being the lock/unlock button (pressure into back of phone can move it in your hand like a seesaw unless you have giant hands).

It takes alot of customization/setup to get this working as good as it can, I ditched all the home/loader stuff for Googles one. I feel it should definitely be sold around the $400 mark, still a solid phone, just overpriced IMO.

Sorry if this is hard to read, I need some sleep. >.>

    • i have the v20 and the print reader on the back is a nuisance, if phone is on desk and you need to unlock you need to pick it up.

print reader should be on the front like motorola or iphones.

      • +12

I prefer it on the back of the phone

      • +5

You could just double tap the screen to wake it up without picking it up. Smart lock means you can also have it unlocked by default in trusted locations or when connected to trusted Bluetooth devices so you don't need to enter a passcode. Fingerprint reader on the back is my preference

      • It's fine on the rear. Using smart unlock it's almost never an issue

    • +11

Dual SIM is always a great feature.

This is the single SIM version though.

      • +11

        Won’t have dac either.

        • +6

Should be mentioned in the OP imo

      • +5

Oh, wish I could edit my post. I didn't know this.

Phone doesn't have Dual SIM or a DAC (Hell, I can't believe the retail on these then, without those extras).

  • Can I claim TRS on this?

    • Yes.

  • +3

Was in love with this phone but it died out mainly because LG's update track record. My LG G4 received one major os update Android 6 and one security update in the 2 years I had it.

    • +1

yeah updates have gone quiet for the v20 also ….. would have expected oreo soon , but v30 is now the poster boy for the v range.

    • Oreo update in February apparently.

  • I am buying a new phone this week - is this the best option for a $500 budget?

  • +1

G6 is a solid phone but I keep coming back to my S7e as the screen looks much better and typing text feels easier with wider keyboard.

    Why I would choose G6:

    • flat screen, easy to find & install cheap screen protector

    • wide screen camera

    • durable, can take some drops

  • Lol.. I'm so surprised that this post has lasted 3 hours without someone mentioning the word "Bootloop" ("I will never buy LG again" etc).

    • +4

The problem seemed to have not popped up for either the V20 or the G6, and a considerable amount of time has passed since then. Reputation is slowly reforged, I suppose!

I have a V20 and am pretty happy that its so far bootloop free, although it does suffer a bit from temporary screen burn-ins, which is a bit annoying.

      • Yeah i've ad the V20 about a year and a half now and no boot-loop for me…touch wood

    • -1

Bootloop LG Boycott there you have it.

  • Thats if they dont up the price between now and 3 days

  • What about the LG V20 for $383.20? From vaya though.. shudders

    • V30 feels more premium. There was a huge improvement between G5 and G6 and I think it is same between V20 and V30.

But V20 for that much is a great bargain, specially if you don't upgrade that frequently. And you can swap battery easily after 1 year or so.

      • Yeah the V30 is too expensive rn. The V20 is not the cheapest ever though (<$360). The HTC U Ultra is only $348 too. Not sure if I should keep the Axon 7 I scored today or pay extra for either the LG or HTC. Camera is important to me which sux on Axon unfortunately. But that free VIP ACP is a very alluring reason to keep it.

        • +1

Axon 7 seems really good, i might try to overcome the camera issue ;)

        • Does it really come with that free VIP ACP currently for the Officeworks deal?

An earlier comment mentioned only for pre-orders?

        • @ozhunter68:

well it's still in the "Accessories" tab. Nothing about pre-order.

  • Like a g6

  • dont buy.own it

    shutter is slow

    screen not bright

    battery drains quick

    • +3

I had the battery issue as well, it was because a rogue APP. I think I pinpointed it to a flashlight APP and after I uninstalled it the battery life is very good.

  • +1

Don't buy an LG if you want updates of any kind. My G6 is still on 7.0 Nougat with the July security patch… Not good enough for a "flagship".

    • It's supported by LineageOS officially.

Look for the Oreo update officially from LG around February.

      • +1

I thought someone mentioned that this had a locked bootloader though…

        • From what I've read, that's only the DS model. The H870K model can be unlocked.

EDIT: I've just been trying to confirm this, and it appears you're correct. The Australian H870K model cannot be unlocked. :(

        • +3

@sammyrc34: That's disappointing… Pretty much a deal breaker for me. The only reason my OnePlus One has lasted this long (and Galaxy S2 before it) is the ability to use custom roms.

        • @sammyrc34: Oh damn, it's model specific….sad.

Hopefully an unlock will come sooner than later, but I'm guessing it'll be way late. Maybe useful to those who hold onto their phones for a few years.

At least Oreo will be on the G6 soon.

    • Only if you can unlock the bootloader which you can't else can go custom ROMs

  • Wow! Paid $518 after $100 AMEX credit, thought that was a good price. Oh well, at least dad got it 2 weeks earlier.

  • +2

No root on this model unfortunately.

    • What does that mean?

  • So sad the Mobileciti not in 20% off list

    • All phones is owned by mobileciti.

      • +2

I know, but different price for LG g6(same spec) in their ebay store

        mobileciti: $575.80

        Allphones: $625.99

        • +2

Why do you think the prices are different when one is participating in 20% off and one isn’t?

  • not sure how I feel about this as the Axon7 was recently $299 with similar spec

The G6 really needed the SD835 soc

I do however really like their design, im on the fence with this one

What is the difference between this and the above beside the above being 64gb? My pixel XL is forever stuck in a boot loop and telstra won't fix it because of a tiny crack on the BACK glass panel … so need a new phone

    • Dual sim and has dac so if these are important to you this is the better phone.

      • Thanks for the reply!! Dual sim isn't important and wasn't even sure what DAC was until I googled it so yeah that isn't important either. Found the ZTE Axon 7 for a lot cheaper though https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/355045 whilst can't find stock for the grey version the gold is $355 and with similar specs to this G6 might just go for the ZTE instead.

    • +1

I don't know how a crack such as the one that you describe would void any sort of warranty on the phone with respect to software. If it's under a contract, I would attempt going through internal dispute resolution or FOS. There's no way that you should be out of the usage of a brand new phone whatsoever.

      • I bought it outright unfortunately and for some reason as it's telstra stock jb hi fi where i bought it from send it to telstra. I've confirmed with google as well though that any external damage voids the warranty :(

        • +1

You have to confirm with the department of fair trading / consumer affairs in your state your rights relating to your phone. There may also be something out there with regards to unfair contracts, depending on whichever state you are in. Alternatively, look up a community legal centre near to you and ask for an opinion.

Don't just go to the retailer etc because what they tell you may not be in accordance with our Australian Consumer Law.

  • +1

With the LG G7 coming out in a month or so, I wonder if its worth waiting a little more for cheaper prices
    /tightarse

    • +1

Need to wait more if it bootloops first before buying. So more waiting…

      • Isnt it known that the bootloops issue isn't such a big deal with these phones?

        • +1

Never know LG has a bad reputation after what happen to G4. So many ozbargainers got burnt by LG its not even funny

  • +1

How do they deal with warranty claim? Same like Kogan? I mean if so we have to post it to get it repaired?

  • is kogan stock any good?

  • Bought it last week from JB HiFi for much more :(

  • Hmmm so this is the H870K huh.
Still a deal or worth waiting for the duel sim model to go on sale?
Is the real disadvantage of the 870k that there is no expandable memory and no DAC?

  • For some reason I assumed it was an OLED screen because it's LG. It's only LCD.

It uses SD821, which is I think is the same gen as Samsung S7 (2016 model). AU version would be the Exynos equivalent of course. I would try to get an S7 for around this price if possible for the better screen. This G6 won't suppport Google Daydream without OLED.

I'm a bit disappointed that LG's 2017 phone does not have SD835 and has a 2016 chip instead.

  • Hmmm so the LG G7 has been delayed, possibly for the end of the year. This makes me think that future deals on this phone may not be as common as I was expecting. But at the same time, I'm wondering if I should wait and see if a deal comes for the DS version. So torn!

  • Can anyone comment whether this model comes with any Telstra bloatware and bootup logo? Or is just complete stock firmware?
