Can you get a deal on the V30+ when it comes out next month? or that exclusively through JB HiFi?

        • +3

V30 is the one I'm waiting for too… Looks to be a beast!

        • my V20 still has new phone smell, but a V30 would be tempting if the price is right.
Moto and LG seem to be a lot of phone for few dollars at the moment.

Just note that you can't unlock the bootloader of this unit, which means you can't run unsigned low-level code, which means you cannot access the r00t drive and use sudo/superuser.

The ones to watch out for are the H870K (Korean) and H870DS (DualSIM/Hong Kong) which don't support it.
Also any weird regional variants like the H871/872/873/ etc etc won't work either.

The only one's that work for custom roms are the European Stock Variant H870 and the USA-Unlocked Version US997. https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g6/how-to/official-lg-g6…

There's many videos, fake-websites, and Apps that claim they can unlock this device.
They aren't real. Only go off XDA, and peer-verified sources.
Here's an example of a fake guide/website you shouldn't trust:
        https://www.androidinfotech.com/2017/06/root-lg-g6-h870-noug…

        • Pretty much what puts me off that phone, otherwise LG G6 is a great phone tbh. I hope somebody can crack that bootloader in H870DS and the H870K

First thing I think of when I see LG.

      • My daily driver Nexus 4 would like a word with you.

        • I had a Nexus 4. Good little phone. I think the later LG phones began having problems. Some hardware issue.

        • My N4 is still going strong - running NitrogenOS 7.1.2

There's an Oreo ROM out already which is mostly working but still quite buggy and missing a few features.

        • @Chimpus:
I wonder how a Nexus 4 stacks up in 2017, in comparison to an iPhone 4S.
Anyone here have both, or can compare them?

        • Don't have a iPhone 4S so can't help on that.

But my Nexus 4 is buttery smooth on Nitrogen OS 7.1.2 (running 5 Aug 17 security patch) - last 7.1.2 ROM as the developer is now focusing on Oreo. The phone is perfectly capable for my daily usage with calls/SMS/Whatsapp, internet, light gaming (though it struggles in newer games) and GPS navigation.

It's incredible to see how well the N4's hardware has aged due to its quad-core processor coupled with 2 GB of RAM. The phone is still plenty capable of running recent stock android builds and will only die once developers finally get sick of the damn thing haha.

That's not to say its all rainbows and lollipops, a few niggles I have are the:

          • Lack of 4G support - I can't tell the difference though as I've never owned a 4G capable phone
          • Small screen size and resolution - high res/tiny bezelled phones like the LG G6 make me hella jelly
          • Potato-quality camera - barely usable compared to most modern phones
          • Degraded battery life - lucky to get a days worth of use out of a single charge

I would love to jump on a LG G6 but the lack of a unlockable bootloader for both the H870K and H870DS editions means it's a no go for me. There's even a bounty of $2000+ on XDA for the first developer to find a way to unlock the DS version's bootloader but no dice at the moment.

        • Pretty hard to compare. N4 was released a year after the 4S. They run totally different software, have totally different hardware and have a very different screen size (3.5" vs. 4.7").

4S had a pretty poorly designed power button which seemed to need replacing very regularly (think I did it at least 3 times when my partner owned one). N4 had a reputation for fragility. I've done quite a few screen replacements on mine but it's a lot easier to replace than the 4S' flex cable. Lots of spare parts still available for both but replacement screen quality for the N4 really varies (I suspect most are knock-offs but some are better made than others).

Both have lost software support (N4 stuck on Android 5 Lollipop and 4S on iOS 10). Lots of ROMS available for the N4, no idea whether there's much of an Apple ROM community (my guess would be no).

        • @Nomadesque:
          Cheers both Chimpus and Nomadesque…
…but I mean the iPhone 4S and the Nexus 4 seem fairly equal devices despite one being made a year earlier.

I wonder which device/experience lasts the test of time better.
I mean if you had an iPhone 3G that would've aged much better than the HTC TouchDiamond.
And the iPhone 3GS that certainly would've outlasted something like the HTC Desire.
Whereas a Samsung Galaxy S2 would've aged better than the iPhone 4.
And the HTC One X seems alright, whereas the iPhone 5 is all but obsolete.

        • +1

          @Kangal:

but I mean the iPhone 4S and the Nexus 4 seem fairly equal devices despite one being made a year earlier.

I disagree, in addition to the differences I've already mentioned:

Nexus 4: Quad core 1.5GHz Krait, 2GB RAM
          iPhone 4S: Dual core 1.0GHz, 512MB RAM

Very different beasts and not really fair to compare. Looking at the specs objectively, the Nexus 4 beats the iPhone 4S by a country mile.

        • @Nomadesque:
In terms of performance, the delta is smaller due to iPhone using a more native language, compared to Android back then using a slower Dalvik (JavaVM) practically exclusively.

However, the RAM issue is a real concern.

In terms of cameras though, the iPhone 4S had a pretty darn good shooter for 2011 and the Nexus 4 had a pretty poor shooter for 2012. Some may call it a draw, but can't tell without having both side by side.

And in terms of styling, they were both pretty great for its time… leagues ahead of the cheap glossy plasticky Galaxy S3.

Well how do you think the iPhone 4S holds up today compared to other rivals like the Motorola RAZR?
(I'd say Galaxy Nexus, but that device is still kept relevant by the Third-party community, although the screen is much worse due to bad burn in over the years. The Samsung NOTE on the other hand holds up favourably better than the iPhone 4S today, in my opinion).

      no longer exist on G6

  • +4

Great deal. For anyone not aware, this model does not have the quad dac. But even the non-quad dac model has better audio output than most other phones according to the Pocket Now real audio review.

    • +1

Mum has the G6 and I use the HTC10. If you're after sound, would highly recommend the HTC10 at this price range. For camera and screen, G6. The fingerprint scanner on the G6 and HTC10 are super quick though HTC coverage for the finger/thumb isn't as much as G6 so you're more likely to try multiple times. Though would still prefer the HTC10 overall. They're both great phones.

      • Does you G6 have the quad DAC?

        • I think it does but the audio output through this wasn't as great on the G6 as it was on htc10.

    • Any cheap earphone support quad dac? I have the grey imported.

      • +4

It's still just a DAC in the end. You would just notice the increase in quality more if you use better headphones/earphones.

        • I have no idea just want to try if it is really better and don't want to pay high price XDD

      • LG V20

  • No dual sim on OZ model :(
Will wait for next grey import deal

    • The Aussie model of the V20 has dual SIM if you wanted Aussie stock and LG.

Not as pretty though and an 820 instead of 821.

      Hi dajackal,

The unbranded H870DS model for $674.49 after P5OZZIE code in Australia is dual sim, only carrier branded versions are single sim.

      Thanks

      • Awesome! Thanks for the reply!

One pixel xl 2 128gb, or nearly three of these hmm..

    • I'm in the same position. I feel the Pixel XL2 is the only phone worthy enough to replace my HTC M8, but at the same time, i could buy many phones for that price.

      • Yeah and the problem with pixel is there's hardly any discounts like other phones due to the exclusives with Telstra and JB. Even the pixel 2016 is expensive a year later

        • I got mine months ago when it was close to AU $460.
So FOUR of the LG G6, or only one iPhone X (~AU$1,830).

          Hmmm….

      • +1

Depends what you value. Soft updates and exclusivity. Being on a V20 I do miss the stock Google feeling

  • +2

Does this model get boot loops too?

    • +2
    • +2

Always a possibility but most people seem to have no issues.

    • +3

      Forget bootloops,

My LG G4 has not had security updates since 2016-01-01. It's still under warranty and local LG Support don't have a clue. They confirmed that their own internal test version of the phone (same model) also doesn't have security updates but they can't tell me why/how to resolve, despite the fact that LG Security page shows updates should be available for critical updates/CVE's going back monthly till now. Be careful with buying LG they don't seem to have their act together here.

      • maybe they got the code right the first time and phone doesn't need updates.

    • Had mine since June 1st. A couple of weeks ago I was charging it on the LG charger, it turned off and it wouldnt turn back on. Just died. Tried everything possible to turn it back on including all the different reset methods - no luck. Bought it off ebay from HK seller, now have to wait 5 weeks for a replacement/service. Wishing I had local warranty right now.

My partner ran into bootloop with her nexus 5x, 3 days after I got the G6 - scared the crap out of me as I thought it was just a matter of time.

Alas, this was not a bootloop issue but a no boot issue. I loved the phone whilst I had it. Running on a mate's iPhone 6s Plus in the mean time, great phone but not a fan of iOS.

    • Nope

    • +1

Whoever is downvoting me, LG has been having reliability issues (causing boot loops) for years and across models so I wanted to know if it's safe yet

      • +1

Yeh that seemed a bit rude, could tell you just wanted to know if it did indeed bootloop or not.

  • +3

Thought boot loop stemmed from the LG phones with Removable batteries, causing the connectors to come loose. Got dad the G6 for father's day. No complaints since…

  • +5

Got the grey import version last month and absolutely loving this phone… Dual sim, DAC, 64gb internal + 16gb SD card, 1 year warranty… for $455. For a flagship model that's only 6 months since release, it's great value for money. Only downside for me is that the G6 is missing IR for remote control, which was present in previous versions, G4 & G5. I've also have been lucky with my G4 - didn't get bootloop issue and now handed down to my old man.

    • what retailer did you buy it from?

Does anyone know when this deal ends?

    Looking to replace my XZ.

    • I was looking to get an XZ lol, what's wrong with it?

      Hi Zacsik,

It is delivery only, there is no pickup.

      • Thanks.

  • Dammit..was about to buy then i noticed “single sim”

    • +2

Pls note that if you use the dual sim card, you DO NOT have the slot for a microSD card. (as it shares the same slot)
Probably fine for some, not for those who takes lots of photos/video clips…

      • +2

Actually if you hack at the plastic of the second sim and the sd card they both fit at once. There are YT video tutorials.

  • That is a good price, I already have a new phone thou and I bought my phone for daydream compatibly, if I was buying a new phone I would make sure it has daydream.

  • Been looking for the g6 to come on here since my phone died 2 weeks ago.. the previous are $100 cheaper with more internal memory so just wondering why this is more? Better model?

    • Au stock. Better warranty

    • This is Australian stock, with LG warranty. The others are grey imports.

  • So AU stock, does that mean 1 or 2 years manufacturers warranty?

    • For LG - 2 years manufacturers warranty

  • Thoughts? This seems like a good price for AU stock but I think I'd want some details from someone who has/had one first

        • eneloop, the pm issue aside, I would welcome anyone posting a negative experience warning people about a company, so that one can then make an informed decision whether or not to buy from them and assess the validity of the complaint. But a blanket statement such as yours without your experience or reason attached doesn't really help anyone.
