Dell Inspiron 15 5000 - 8th Gen i7 8550u (4-core), 8GB RAM, 4GB Radeon 530, 2TB HDD, Backlit KB, DVD, 15.6" FHD $999 @ Dell eBay

380
PING20

I noticed a price-drop on this one, making it quite attractive as one of the first 8th-gen i7's available in Australia, and it's below $1000 with dedicated graphics.

It is important to note that the 8th-gen UV models are quad-core and wipe the floor with previous gen models, including some HQ models.

This model has 2TB of HDD slowness, so an SSD upgrade may need to be factored into the cost. M.2 NVMe seems to be supported based on specs below.

Full specs here. (Thanks @bluedez_man)

  • 8th gen cpu
    dedicated graphics
no SSD but a rather large HDD
    $1000

    What's the catch?

    • No catch but genuine bargain :D

Sure it's heavy and probably cheaply built, but it's damn hard to beat for the price imo.

Does anyone know if the HDD can be swapped out for a SSD?

      • +4

If it's a normal HDD (which this is), then you can always swap it for a 2.5" SSD. I have done this plenty of times, including on Dell machines. You can put the existing HDD into a $9 USB3.0 caddy. You may also be able to put an extra HDD into the space where the optical drive is, but that may require the purchase of other components.
I do not believe this laptop has an M.2 slot, but I do not know this for sure.

      The catches are:

      a) The AMD dedicated GPU is pretty rubbish, it's probably not worth having, considering the likely impact on battery life. But the CPU is pretty good.
      b) Definitely needs an SSD to have decent battery life - that HDD would be sloooooow.

      • +3

        c) The display is a terrible TN panel

        • Is it? I thought Dell only sold IPS panels on the Inspiron 15 5000 Gaming series now.

        • @oscarmanutdfan:

The spec page says tn, and the gen 7 is a tn panel

        • @oznik: Other models like the new version of the Inspiron Gaming 5000 like the 7577 (with Gen 7 i5-7300HQ) only use IPS now, so it's confusing.

Laptops with AMD's Raven Ridge are coming out with the CPU part slightly slower single-threaded than Intel's 8th gen and multi-threaded slightly higher along with graphics that are on par or better than the 530 and 3x Intel's integrated. That's probably why OEMs are dropping prices for weird builds like this. It just doesn't make sense having such a weak dedicated GPU…

    • the brand lol

    • to some, the catch might be "non-touchscreen panel".

    • while others might consider the lack of thunderbolt 3 as a "catch".

  • How does thus compare to the xiaomi notebook pro?

    • +1

It's slightly heavier (2.2kg vs. 2.0kg), but you are less likely to have issues if you need to use warranty. I am not sure whether the Xiaomi ones have the 8th gen i7, but I know for sure that the 8th gen i5 model is more expensive than this, despite being less powerful.

    • Xiaomi has far better build quality (and is lighter), a better graphics card, and 256GB SSD. Plus it looks far better

Benefit of this Dell is the juicier CPU and the local warranty - the option to upgrade the RAM is nice too (Xiaomi Pro is soldered)

Edit: Looks like this has a TN panel too…no thanks Dell! Xiaomi appears to have a nice IPS screen, from most reviews.

  • Windows home or Pro??

    • +2

      The description says "Home"

      • +2

        With no ssd. Deal killer.

  • And compared to this? http://www.dell.com/au/p/inspiron-15-5567-laptop/pd?oc=sma51…

    Slower processor but ssd? 🤔

    • +6

The 7th gen i5 is dual core and nowhere near as powerful as this quad core 8th gen i7.

Also the hdd can be swapped out for ssd.

      This is definitely better.

  • Could someone please assist what this actually mean?

"1 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C™ (optional) with PowerDelivery and Video – only on Configs with Discrete graphics"

Does this have USB Type C or not? and what is Discrete Graphics mean?

    • it means on model with a dedicated gfx card which this has.

  • Swap DVD with SSD and its good to go

  • How much faster would the i7 8550U be than the i5 7300HQ in the other Inspiron 7577 deal?

I’m guessing it could be a lot faster for photo/video editing? But the GTX 1060 in the other model would destroy this one for gaming.

Be very careful buying Dell product. They can just, without justification, deny warranty.

    • +3

Do you have a justification for posting this accusation?

    • I haven't seen this at all. In fact, Dell have (IMO) one of the best warranties in consumer electronics.

A close friend just started having a problem with her Inspiron 13 7000 laptop a couple weeks back. It was getting hot and then spat up an error message that said the CPU fan wasn't working properly. I emailed Dell on her behalf to start the warranty process, they replied the same day with a detailed method of further testing and I've been getting almost daily emails from Dell updating me on the progress of the claim. They also come to the owner on-site for repairs, which is awesome.

      • +1

Yeah this was my experience when the battery died in my 7559 as well. Laptop tells you there is a problem and gives a code, you log in to dell website enter the code and follow the instructions. Tech shows up at address of your choice, replaces part and you can get on with your life. It was awesome and very easy, no send-it-away-and-hope-they-find-the-problem BS like most other consumer electronics.

  • Where's the SSD?

    • +1

      BYO

    • Out of this price range

      • out of this price range

128GB SSD = 1TB HDD when buying wholesale. Dunno if this would scale (ie 256 equal to 2tb), but it at least means a 128GB could be offered.

  • If you like the look of this deal but want something with a stronger GPU and SSD, Dell Factory Outlet is selling a couple of the Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming (7567 model) at around the same price. Still get full factory warranty etc.

  • Hows the screen on the Dell notebooks vs the Lenovo notebooks IPS screens? Anyone have an idea?

  • +1

This laptop is now available for $989 using coupon "Pantone".

    • hahaha.. Expired. Tried it this morning.
