        • The price jack-up would take down ebay in Australia one day for sure….

    • They are. $1 sundays with no selling fee

  • +3

This is great news for OzB! It feels like every other deal on HUKD (UK OzB equivalent) is Amazon. They are also excellent at price matching other retailers deals.

    • HUKD is an OzBargain equivalent, except the site and the users aren't precious RE negative (cold) deal votes. That said I prefer OzBargain's style.

  • +7

I'm not sure Amazon is going to be an immediate success. They have set their selling fees at 9% (ebay is 9.9%), although this is free for the first few months…. Looking forward to both Ebay and Amazon decreasing their sell fees to compete.

    • +2

You are wrong, they are going to sell things so cheap all the time Oz Bargain is going to be flooded with Amazon deals.

    • +2

I read that amazons fees range from 7-15%? (most being in the 12% category)

eg, depending on category amazons fees are different - ebay its all the same.

also ebays fees are 8% if you are a powerseller with a store? (2% discount)

    • +2

Ebay has recently sneakily raised the fee to 10.9%.

  • +2

    +1 … Cause Amazon

  • +8

Upvote just for the start of Amazon!

  • +15

I have a creeping feeling Amazon will be a huge dud…

    • +3

A number of other company heads privately think this.

    • +14

Because we have such a great offering of online shops in Australia already? Are you kidding me.

      • Dud in the way of "more of the same". I hope they'll drive competition, but they can also align themselves with existing giants.

    • +4

I concur. Unless Amazon undercuts existing sellers by 20%+ I don't see them making a huge dent in the retail landscape. Consumers have been able to save money by making purchases online for years now, so if the haven't made the switch yet I don't see why they would just because of Amazon.

      Unless the savings are incredible.

      • +10

When Amazon get 2-4 hour Prime delivery sorted into the main cities, and once customers have experienced their no quibble customer service, then there is no turning back. The whole shopping experience is years ahead of the current AU retail landscape. The recommendation algorithms are (scarily) useful. Anyone who's used Amazon locally for years then moves here immediately notices the glaring void in the market.

They don't have to undercut by 20% to get my business. They just have to be the lowest price, or the joint lowest price I can find and I will be there.

        • +3

In the US Amazon does not have to deal with customer warranty issues on third party product because over there it's the manufacturer, not the retailer, that is responsible for warranty claims. The law here puts the onus on the retailer, so let's see how Amazon deals with that. My understanding is their customer service is not as great as you make out, just look at these US Consumer Affairs reviews:

          https://www.consumeraffairs.com/online/amazon.html

        • @DaptoDog: I'm talking about Amazon UK.

        • +3

@Symbiotic: But come to think of it I purchased a Panasonic underwater camera from Amazon US a few years back. It let in water about 11 months after purchasing. I emailed Amazon US, they refunded me the full cost of the camera, and they paid for return postage of the camera. I'm sure the Amazon marketplace has some shady sellers - look at eBay's marketplace - it's hard to control. If you order direct from Amazon they don't mess about when it comes to customer service.

        • +2

Transport of goods to consumers will also need to be sorted out - we all know how abysmal couriers in Australia can be.
Without their own network they will be relying on third party courier companies and forcing service levels onto them..until they decide to acquire / build their own.
It will take a while to build momentum but they will get there.

        • +1

@DaptoDog: It doesn't matter whether they have to by law or not - they still do. They've dealt with every warranty issue I've ever had with a product without the slightest pushback. I'd go as far as to say there's no reasonable way they can make the process any smoother - a big reason why I always favour Amazon if the price is vaguely competitive.

      • Maybe we'll end up with another great example of how cost of running a business here in Australia will be on display when they can't undercut competitors that much due to wages, taxes, bills, etc. etc.

(I have no honest idea how it will play out in reality)

      • I'm hoping that they'll address the major problem with online sellers - post sale service. Sure you can save a bunch of money buying all your stuff from China, but it's such a PITA to deal with the delivery times, missing items, faulty items, etc; sometimes it's not worth it.

    • +5

Just based on customer service, it will at least shove a rocket up the behind of most other australian retailers :)

    • +1

I hope you're wrong, but I have the same feeling.

    • I don't, but only time will tell. Might take a bit of time to bed in. They also have the resources to take a hit whilst they engage the market. We shall see!

    • I've suspected this ever since I heard about Amazon opening warehouses here but some people can't even fathom the idea.

But of course I'm happy to be proven wrong.

  • +3

We should get petty good deals from amazon with 0% margin.

  • +6

Should be interesting with Officeworks Price match too…

    • +2

They probably give excuses not to price match….

      • OW price match is a joke. They will see whether there is an exact match of the model number

        • +1

Agreed. I had the moron trying to give me the "well that doesn't factor in the fuel consumed in driving there". Had to threaten the guy a formal complaint to management just to get a price match!

        • +2

@stevles: you should just say that has squared out the time I spent talking to an idiot like you.

        • @stevles: lol…you should have asked "have you factored in the dental costs your about to need?"

  • Something something Amazon something.
    Oh it is the Amazon.

  • Do you think you can buy Ralph Lauren shirts on Amazon Australia? You can't on the US Amazon site.

    • +10

Hang on, let me get my crystal ball ;)

      • +5

ok thanks, let me know when you get the answer.

        • I think he is still waiting for delivery from Amazon US

    • Amazon would be crazy not to stock Ralf Laren Skirts

      • +1

i'm sure you'll be able to all the skirts you need. all the best.

      • Pretty sure you can pick those up at any local market, Shenzhen special. :P

    • Yes you can but not all…https://www.amazon.com/Ralph-Lauren-Oxford-Button-Down-Shirt/dp/B074JFSPQV/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1511393685&sr=8-5&keywords=ralph%2Blauren%2Bshirt&refinements=p_n_shipping_option-bin%3A3242350011%2Cp_n_condition-type%3A6461716011&th=1&psc=1

  • Waiting for the ice creams to be OZBed…

  • It's pretty hot. I hope they don't melt by tonorrow.

  • im assuming its on the main exit not on the bridge?

guess the long way it is tomorrow!

    Huawei Mate 10 please.

    • +3

How about a free ice cream?

    • Hoping for a good pixel 2 deal

  • +13

What an amazing role OzBargain will play with Amazon launch. Though this bastard of a site has tricked me in spending hundreds if not thousands it is still my most respected online community of fellow bargain hunters. If you are not ozbargain - where the hell are you :).

  • +1

Wonder what type of ice cream they'll use…

  • How is this a deal ? Shouldn't this post go into the freebies section ?

    • +2

Freebies are deals, they're discounted from their normal price.

They go in the forum when they're always free, which this isn't.

    • Many are wanting this to be a "big deal" so it's correctly here

    • -3

I agree - there’s no detail (we don’t even know what time the free ice cream will be distributed)! The mods haven’t responded to my report though; I suppose because it’s now attracted a bit of traffic to the site/page and for each page view they get $$.

  • +2

Where's the link to pre-order my free ice-cream?

  • What kind of flavours and queue times can Prime customers expect?

  • I don't think really think that they will sell things a lot cheaper.

    • +2

      ok

  • +1

This is not the first Amazon promotion. Amazon was at Westfield Knox last month to promote The Tick and handed out free buckets of popcorn with blue Tick headbands.

  • +1

Tomorrow will be 32+ degrees. The line will span from South Cross Station to Flinders Street Station!

  • +1

Whenever Amazon starts up in a new region the take huge losses, for example in Indua. I'll gladly assist them in losing money when they undercut the current market prices.

    • You sure that's legal in Australia?

      • According to the ACCC a couple of weeks ago….. Yes.

  • Who here reckons the Amazon launch will be a fizzer?

I mean, yeah, they may be cheaper but I see them pricing themselves under the other retailers "just enough" to get the sale.

I mean why would you sell a product $200 cheaper than all the other retailers when you all you need to do is sell it $20 cheaper to get the sale?

I see a lot of bubbles being burst…

Eventually they'll be the same as all the others.

    • Who would buy that just $20 cheaper than at a local retailer and have to wait for a delivery. I wouldn't.

    • Because they're not an Australian retailer.

  • +3

Items are being populated it seems https://www.amazon.com.au/s/field-keywords=cables

  • +1

May be we should have amazonbargain.com.au for just amazon deals

  • +3

Their current warehouse is basically empty at the moment. I would imagine that their main early focus will be on Amazon Marketplace and not selling their 'own' products. Hopefully we get Amazon Prime fairly soon.

    Bring it on.

    • +1

How do you know the warehouse is empty. Have you been inside of it?.

      • +1

I read an article last week. The journalist had been inside.

        • +2

That was last week. This is this week.

        • @hollykryten: I guess we'll find out by the end of the week. I still reckon their initial focus will be on Marketplace.

  • Give some ice cream to the masses before you start looting them.

  • +5

I used Amazon UK regularly for a decade before moving to Australia. Number of unresolved issues: 0. Can't say the same for my personal experiences with Dick Smith, David Jones, and Hardly Normal. To be fair I've had decent customer service experiences with JB HiFi and Myer. Takes time to sort things out with any of those stores though. Often involves a visit or a phone call. Just flick Amazon an email via the website. Sorted.

  • +2

This might be a bargain for $70.03

G29 Driving Force Racing Wheel for Playstation

  • I wonder how quick is their delivery time. I heard they will have their own courier company? or use existing ones?

    • +1

Australia Post. Which they'll come to regret.

      • Is that known, that they'll be using Aus Post? Or just speculative?

  • +2

    https://www.amazon.com.au/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%…

    F310 Logitech controller on Amazon.com.au: $27.74, JB: $37, UMart: $25, Amazon US: $13.19 (USD), EBAY AU: $30

I decided to do a comparison to see how prices matched up with current places… Since I can still buy this controller from a shop for cheaper, it doesn't seem like huge undercuts. Obviously better than JB though.

    • Still have to pay shipping on top though I assume…

      • "FREE Delivery on eligible orders" Does this mean free delivery for the controller? Most likely.

    • +3

I did a bunch more searches on stuff I could find. Anything to do with luggage, bags, etc are same prices you can find elsewhere (or cheaper). Ebay prices usually matched those on Amazon.
Anything to do with computers, I could find it cheaper, often at UMart but also on some other websites.

I was going to record my results, but not a single item has been cheaper on Amazon so far.

Will Alexa finally be able to be configured with an Australian Address??

  • Will/is the Amazon Australia web link

    amazon.com/au
    Or
    amazon.com.au

  • Crossing my fingers hoping this doesn't fail…

  • I have been listing things on Amazon au but the system is buggy as hell. I don't think the full range will be available on Friday given there's so many things wrong with it when I put things up. Can't even click into the listings to preview what I made. Support said they're slowly phasing functions and capabilities in.

  • +1

    Gamechanger.

  • +1

Will I be able to buy eneloops for a bargain on Amazon? That is the only reason I could think to use it…

  • +1

    Amazon's licking the competition.

Fk Amazon, bring back dick Smith’s brah

    • As if. Kogan owns the Dick Smith trade branding.
