*I ignored stores where they listed a lower price but had no stock or didn't match the same vintage.

After cash back you're probably saving around 10% at a minimum across the entire range but these are all quite limited stock wine's as they're from Dan Murphy's "Cellar Release section" so it's really hard to put a price on a lot of them as you generally aren't able to buy them anymore.

Some are available via auction websites but i've never personally been a fan of those websites after hearing stories of damaged bottles and corked wines without any right of return. I have had a lot of good usage of the Cellar Release collection from Dan's as I did have one that was corked and they replaced it without any issue.

I bought a bunch as X-Mas gifts as it's nice to give something that's harder to obtain in a shop and am keeping the St Henri for myself.

  • It's been more than a week on offer now. Not particularly good value unless you really want the St Henri.

    Not even worth $250

Why not? The St Henri is worth at least $100 meaning your get 6 of the others for $150, so $25 each.

The value in these sorts of deals really is down to the individual. Here's the value I get from it:

2009 Wynns - Bought a couple in 2011 at $18/bottle from Dan Murphys. Have cellared and just drank my last one, and it's a lovely wine. A bloody great investment of $18. Still, wouldn't value it over $30 even now.
2012 Wynns / 2012 Blass - bought these at $20/bottle a couple of years ago, wouldn't pay over $25 each.
2012 Bin 128 - don't have this vintage, but still wouldn't value 2012 at over about $28 (i.e. what you might find a recent vintage for on special).

So this tops out at $150-180 value for me for these 6. Which leaves…

2009 St Henri - given I have recently picked up 2013 and 2014 St henri for $50/btl, I couldn't value 2009 any more than about $60. So after all wish/cash rewards discounts, it's a line ball proposition for me. In the end, I'd rather buy current vintages and cellar; Dan's 'cellar release' premium is pretty extraordinary…

I'd value the Bin 128 and St Henri higher but don't agree that the value in these is down to the individual, that's why I tried to provide some comparative pricing rather than the Dan's pricing. It's certainly not a cut and dry "bargain" if you have a good history of picking wines and cellaring etc but based on current prices and availability it's a good chance to pick up wines that have been properly cellared.

      Thanks for your input.

but don't agree that the value in these is down to the individual

Uhh…you seem to have an each-way bet here!

Re: cellaring, my uncle gave an interesting insight a few years ago when he pointed out that reds used to be sold with a little more 'cellar' or 'bottle' aging from the winery. About 20 years ago (by his noticing), those bottles in winery cellars became 'liabilities' rather than assets on the winery books. Wineries shifted their business models more to a turnover base - make the wine and get it out. He even argued the style of winemaking has since adapted to make reds easier to drink younger (the 'slurpable/smashable' sales terms give a good indicator these days).

Hence you see Dan Murphys taking the liability or 'risk' on by puchasing in bulk and doing the cellaring - and slapping their big markups on the wines. I wish my wages went up as quickly as the price of that bottle of 2009 Wynns has!

        • sorry typo, that was meant to be "I DO agree that the value of these is down to the individual".

    • Fair enough, the premium to be paid here is for the age of the wines, not everyone has the patience or storage to buy current vintages and keep for several years. And these wines, cabernet and shiraz all need several years minimum. So I'm happy to pay $25 a bottle for these wines, already aged.

And I've gotta ask, where are you buying St Henri for $50?!

  • Just to note. The 2012 Bin 128 was about $36 before they started this deal. I had it in my cart the night before and the next day was like WTF???

I would imagine all these wines prices were inflated overnight to make the deal look good.

2009 Black label was also $28 in a Dans deal a month ago.
