  • If you can, purchase using Coles mastercard with price protection if prices drop in the near future, hence why I check their prices regularly for price drops…

Intel's 8th generation chips are definitely worth getting. Multi-core performance has increased by over 30-40%. Great for people who do parallel programming and use demanding software.

    • This one uses intel 7th gen laptop CPU.

Yeah. I probably missed out a sentence or two.

Better to wait until next year.

        • Intel isn't exactly giving people more cores for the same price. The 8th gen i3's and i5's do have more cores, but they are costing more. The 8th gen is also a bit tricky. Some are really just 7th gen with more cores, whereas some are I guess 8th gen.

The reality is Intel hasn't made any real core level improvement for a few years now. It's only after AMD started becoming competitive, Intel starting to respond. It used to be after 2 years, a new architecture / design is used. Now, it is up to 4 year cycle.

Everything is better to wait till next year 😴

Intel haven't put 4 cores in their U series processors. This is a first.

      Represents a pretty big milestone.

      • There is the HQ series too. Not really a big milestone. It's more a stop gap and quick fix (or perhaps intel held back before). We have AMD to thank. Not really sure what Intel had been doing for the past 2-3 years, with Apple A series chip getting big speed increase each year, Intel basically had been just doing baby steps.

        • There is the HQ series too

That suck a lot of power.

They're still running mobile apps. Totally different.

        • @smuggler: There are other differences between U and HQ (and you can see them being reflected in Macbook Pro 13 vs 15). Two of the USB-C ports on the 13 inch have reduced bandwidth.

When you look at the the performance of 8th gen U (don't get me wrong, it does have a bigger jump, compared to the improvement from 6th gen U to 7th gen U), you cannot help but feel that Intel still held back and doesn't want U to beat previous gen HQ CPUs. That's basically one of the things I dislike about Intel. Why not put coffee lake cores in 8th gen U?

Apple A series CPU basically shows how bad intel U series has been for the past few years. We've only seen A11 so far, there is A11X to come still. Let's forget about Intel Atom CPUs, they are way too far behind now. It is more a business decision, rather than technical.
