Good price though - excellent price actually. Not sure how many they move, they say they are "restocking"

Edit: Doesn't work on the tubes; already a "promo" @ 50% off. Not a bad price none-the-less!

Nitecore T Series Tube 45LM USB Rechargeable LED Light Keychain - GONE @ $8.00 (no discounts on promo) - all sold - says 315 left at price, but no stock.

  • So many torches on gearbest/banggood! Can anyone recommend me a torch that would be great for a 5 year old to take camping? Priced at around $20 after discount code. Thanks!

      • I'd be a bit cautious giving a 5yo a light that bright that also takes an 18650 battery.

        • I'm new to these torches (and batteries), can you please advise what the safety considerations are with regards to this type of battery?

        • @Qbagger: they've just gotta be treated with respect. I'm not sure what battery comes with this light, but lithium rechargeables shouldn't be discharged too far or overcharged too far, and not all lights have protection built in to prevent it. Some cells have protection built in which are safer to use in cheaper lights that don't have protection.

        • @ebosh:
Fair enough! I'm just use to eneloop but have purchased this battery on recommendation from the other thread: https://www.techaroundyou.com/Vape-Batteries-Australia-Melbo…

How do I know what protection the battery has? And for that matter, the torch? Perhaps naively I thought the USB rechargeable aspect of the torch would ensure it's safety but keen to learn if that is not the whole story. Thanks for your help.

        • @Qbagger: that battery is great if you know what you are doing, but it doesn't have a protection circuit and it's also a flat top which means it won't work in some torch brands like nitecore. Looking a bit closer at the torch you bought, it appears to have low voltage protection so you should be fine. Personally I wouldn't trust the battery that it comes with without knowing what it is, but I'm a bit paranoid with lights and batteries.

If you want to dive into the torch rabbithole, head over to reddit.com/r/flashlight and say hi. There is also candlepowerforums.com and budgetlightforums.com but I find Reddit to be easier to navigate and a bit friendlier.

        • @ebosh:
Thanks for looking into it for me. The torch doesn't come with a battery so thankfully no unknown there. On your advice I have read up further and can see that even though there is a separate mode switch to the on/off switch and I could preset the lumens to low or medium, there is a good chance that my boy could activate the flare mode unknowingly and burn his hand or look into the light.

I have bought him a Nitecore Tube instead and will hold onto the "pro" torch for myself. Thanks again

        • @Qbagger:

I was looking for a battery for that microusb rechargeable torch too. Is that not a good battery to choose? What would be better?

        • @kiwijunglist:
I think the battery suggested will be perfect for the torch but the suggestions above are more related to safety/use by small children.

        • @ebosh: You seem like you know your stuff. Can you help me out? I bought the Nitecore P30, LG HG2 18650 batteries (flat tops I think?) and a Nitecore i4 charger — are these all compatible?

        • +1

@skint: HG2's are great (I've got 8 in the house) but they are flat tops and wont work with your P30. You need a button-top cell, so you have 3 options. You can either stick a small magnet on the positive end, solder a little blob on the positive end, or buy a button top cell. I've got some Panasonic NCR18650B cells that I use in my nitecore lights. They'll set you back between $8-$10 depending where you get them from (Au vs CHN).

        • @kiwijunglist: yeah, the battery would be fine. It's probably overkill to be honest, but overkill is better than not good enough. Especially when it comes to batteries.

        • @ebosh: Thanks mate, champion

      • Thanks, yes I got one of those in the end.

    • Thorfire make a good 1xAA light (TG06S) I used to have the older model (TG05) but gave it to a friend. It's still kicking after 2 years, and he uses it daily as an electrician (it gets knocked around a lot). It's only $20 so not the end of the world if you lose it

      https://www.amazon.com/ThorFire-Flashlight-Powered-Included-…

They will be selling on Amazon AU if you can hold out, otherwise they ship here if you don't mind waiting.

  • The Nitecore P15 is on sale currently at Gearbest @$32 delivered. Everywhere else I've looked including banggood, eBay and fasttech are selling it for approximately $70

    • Thanks for that. The P15 looks perfect except I should have mentioned my preference of running of eneloop AA/AAAs! Any other ideas?

  • Any really good deals on wide beam torches? For general use.

  • Nitecore TM16 or TM16GT if you want more throw (distance) are a crazy torch for the money.
Put it this way, they're brighter than most cars headlights!
