  • Thanks OP, grabbed one. Was looking at OBDx items, but couldn't find one that looked reliable. The old commodore has a random Check Drivetrains, for no discernible reason. Clearing that jingle every time it starts is worth $30!

    • What commodore? Some of the older ones use ALDL instead of OBD2

      • VZ 2006. Even if it doesn't work for it, have a newer car, and always handy to have one!

        • +1

Yeah definitely, pretty sure VZ is OBD2 anyway so should be fine :)

        • I get data from our 2006 VZ. Holden have done their own thing tho, and a few desirable PID's are undocumented.
It should be able to read fault codes and reset etc.

        • @Major Mess: Whats a PID?

        • @mkylpz: The code you send into the car's network to get specific data. ie a PID for temp, PID for speed etc.
Holden, unlike Chev, think it is good to keep secrets from the car owner, and only support the most basic standard PID's. The others are unknown and have to be analysed by trial and error.

  • Can it be used to report the actual speed of the vehicle? The speedometers usually show upto 5Kmph less than the actual speed.

    • Legal requirement in Victoria and most other states to show as under.

      • That's fine. I am just curious to know whether this device can show the speed or not.

          find the manual and read

          its acutally 1st page google

      • surely this incites road rage?

Just use a gps based speed measuring app on your phone?

  • I got a MS309 from ebay not that long ago for around $18 not sure how it compares to this deal.

Another option is the cheaper Bluetooth OBD2 interface that pairs with a phone.

    • I believe iPhones still have crippled bluetooth, but you can get a wifi ODB2 device for them.

I feel like negging you because I just spent $30 on something I never wanted until 5 min ago

You wanted it, just didn't know it :)

Fakespot showing poor grade in lots of the reviews:

    https://www.fakespot.com/product/car-code-reader-launch-crea…

    • How reliable is fakespot?

      • Good point, I'd say it's another data point that can be considered with the decision making.

I did some research. Fakespot gives a grade depending on how many bad/suspicious reviews it finds. But that doesn't imply whether the legit reviews are good or bad.

There's another site reviewmeta, which gives an adjusted grade using the more legit reviews, in this case it went from 4.5/5 to 4.1/5 which is still decent.

I'm in the US right now, and it's $15USD for me, so decided to pick one up…

  • Any better than a BT ELM327 OBDII reader and the Torque App? ?

I can also imagine trying to read codes from my OBDII port with a 47" cable (~120cm) - not enough unless the kick panel is dropped/removed…

  • Has the price gone up? Mine says $US33.99 + $US6.84 on amazon.

    • Yes.
