LG G6 is a good deal. How can you claim that it is Australian stock, when the H870DS (dual sim) is not sold by LG to the Australian market?

    • +6

      Hi Xreenberg,

The H870DS model is sold in Australia, see LG AU website. Thanks

      • -1

        any deal on Mate 10?

        • +2

          WTF where you been?

      • +5

Fair enough. I was misinformed re dualsim phone in Australia.

    • +6

Mate you need to do more research or ask in a less accusatory manner. Look at mobileciti listed as an official retailer of this model.

The LG G6 is great value at $450 (like back in June)…. but today at $600 its very meh.

Although it doesn't help that: the OnePlus One, 3, and 3t don't have 700MHz LTE/Band 28. The OnePlus 5 and 5t has increased significantly in price compared to its predecessors. The ZTE Axon 7 came to Australia late and with a heavy "Aussie tax" so it didn't stick. The new Chinese Blackberry phones and Nokia phones aren't very compelling, yet demand premium prices. Same with the Essential Phone, which is okay, but very expensive (price-cuts for US only). Whilst the Razer Phone is overall not a good phone. Also the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro (3GB/16GB/Band28 English version) is quite outdated. And the fact that there hasn't been proper competitors to the likes of the Samsung S6 and S7, so these previous flagships don't have to compete as hard today when it comes to price-cuts. And lastly there's Apple who has raised its prices of the 4.7in, 5.5in, and X models higher… decreasing a competitive factor for the alternative companies.

And to make matters worse, the QSD 835 is only a smidge better than the QSD 821. The QSD 821 is functionally identical to the QSD 820. And the QSD 820 is competing in performance to the midrange QSD 660. And now the QSD 660 is joined with a low-end brother, the QSD 636, which is basically an underclocked variant. So even comparing a low-end QSD 636 to a high-end QSD 835 in 2017… there's not much improvement. The real improvement, in single-core performance, is coming in (Feb ?) 2018 with the Galaxy S9 (who has exclusive rights) and later in (April ?) 2018 to other competing devices.

TL;DR: It's acceptable, but not a great deal. This device is going to go from an okay-high-end device today… to a great-low-end device early next year. Which makes this deal proposition even harder to swallow.

    • Very good summary of the mobile landscape at the moment.

Personally I'm very interested in the upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 (the Redmi 5 is due in a week but no clues yet on the Note variety). Rumours are of a SD636, 18:9 1080 x 2160 5.99" screen, 3/4 GB RAM, 32/64GB ROM, possible dual-cam setup, along with the usual sizeable 4000mAh battery. If the price stays consistent it looks like another ~$200 price segment winner. Of course B28 is unlikely but I've had no problems with the Note 3/4s so far.

      • +2

eh. i have a xiaomi mi a1 and while i generally really like it, the lack of b28 is way more noticeable than what OzB seem to think it is. the number of dropouts i get now is huge compared to my old 6p.

        • Fair enough- I guess it depends on network and location as well. It worked fine on Optus in Sydney for me.

        • @johnn: yea fair enough. i notice it a lot in the adelaide cbd on optus.

        • +1

          @johnn:
No, skip the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5.

Has a slower QSD 625 processor than the Redmi Note 3.
Doesn't have any significant improvements over the Redmi Note 4.
Has a less-practical 18:9 aspect ratio screen (2160 x 1080)… which makes the phone slightly larger, but the screen slightly smaller. And price is going to go up slightly.

If you have a working phone now, I would hold on to it.
Wait until April 2018 to upgrade. Newer high-end QSD 845 phones will come out, and we will know the landscape much better. Whilst current high-end QSD 835 will become obsolete/mid-range, so we should expect a lot of price cuts. You could probably get an LG V30 for $400-$500, and maybe a OnePlus 5 for $300, as a reference point.

I saw LG G6 was $433 in HN store 3 weeks ago.

      • Was it/do they have the H870DS (quad dac) model?

Edit: looks like they do, nice

        • Yes, H870DS.

But at this price point, Essential Phone looks better.

        • @andylch:

Bought the 870DS a while back for around $550 to replace a One Plus One with a dying touch screen and it has been awesome. I saw some people complaining about slow transition between the two cameras and that the camera quality is poor, apparently LG have used a 2.1mm (good) and a 2.9mm (bad) lense for the wide angle camera. I got the 2.1mm and it has been awesome. Looking at Reddit it isn't clear if all 870DS have the good 2.1mm though.

      • Store specific? Sounds decent.

        • Moore Park HN VIP Night. I am not sure other stores have VIP Night too.

Anyway, A$4xx is a standard price in many overseas markets now as well, due to the fierce competition and its outdated spec.

      • Currently listed at $788. Why didn’t you post this?

      • Cant see $433 on price hipster. You should have posted it as a deal

        • Not very meaningful because the VIP Night ran for few hours on that night only. But $433 is definitely still a profitable price for HN, similar to hundreds of other items on that night.

So, you can see what's a rip off at $600+.

      • Was this a secret sale or something?

    • +2

That price was for grey imports. Can’t really compare.

    • 821 vs 835 battery life difference is huge in my experience. The HTC U11 had a smaller battery 3000 vs 3300mah but significantly better battery life than the LG G6 I'm currently using. It was also noticeably faster (speed could be skin related)

    • $450 sounds like an amazing price, though I was more than happy to order one for $600 today. I think that calling it 'acceptable' is a bit harsh, and it will be far from a low end device early next year. Newer and greater tech comes out all the time, though most high end mobiles from 2 years ago (such as my Note 5) still work very well today. What really matters is the user experience and features on offer.

With the LG G6, the dual camera setup is great, allowing you to switch between the standard lens and the wide angle lens. Whilst the Note 8 and the iPhone X have dual cameras (at 2-3x the price), I am not sure whether they allow you to use them in this way, they are more for gimmicky features like portrait mode. I am also keen to check out the manual video recording feature and Hi-Fi sound recording.

Is it the best mid range mobile out there in terms of hardware? No. One of the other mobiles I was comparing it to was the Galaxy S8, which has some newer internals and a slightly better display / arguably a better camera, though there were various reasons that pushed me to the G6.

E.g. the wide angle lens option, the more durable design, the lack of a curved display, better fingerprint sensor placement etc.

TL;DR Specs are important, though the overall user experience and features that meet the users needs are more important.

  • considering the previous WTF deal, just couldn't quite get the FFS deal with these initials ;)
    Nice try though

  • Hi OP, any chance for Sennheiser PXC 550?

  • Keen on a new HTC. Is this One X10 better than the U11 Ultra?

    • +1

Think U mean the U Ultra, not the U11 (flagship, the U11+ is also out but not launched in Australia yet)

The X10 is made of a solid metal construction whereas the U Ultra is a "sophisticated liquid surface" (read: glass and metal). In addition the X10 has quite a lot better battery life than the U Ultra which is average. Other than that, there are only minor negligible differences.
Also something I just realised is that the X10 has the tiniest camera bump, but will probably still make it unable to lie flat on a surface.
And the U Ultra has that second screen, which can either make or break your decision (can be really useful or just a gimmick that drains your battery)

      Hope I helped U

      • Yes, you are right, that's the one I had in mind U Ultra not U11, thanks for the comments. It's not an easy choice, U Ultra was much more expensive originally, so it makes me thing that it should be a better phone that the X10. I saw X10 for $300 recently, that's why I was wondering if it's a better buy for the extra $50 than the X10. It's so confusing, some people even say that the M10 which is older is better than X10 :)
I guess whichever I pick will already be a huge improvement over my M8?

        • X10 still runs on Helio P10 where as U Ultra runs on SD821 (found in Oneplus 3T). Also X10 has 3GB RAM where as U Ultra has 4 GB RAM. U Ultra has better camera. Only thing where U Ultra trailing behind to X10 is battery capacity.

        • Is the camera on the X10 any better than the one on M8?

        • +1

@Ringu: You are meaning the one on the M8 (with ultrapixels) not the one on the M8s (13MP) right?

That largely depends though on the M8. Shots can be very hit and miss, great low light performance but not really a great camera; I think the X10 would trump this however. I have researched previously about the M8 (and recently about the X10) but can't say I have owned either. The M8 has got a camera rating of 7 on a particular website (can't remember) while U Ultra has a 9 and no info for X10.

          Note the size differences though:
          HTC One X10 152.90 x 75.60 x 8.20
          HTC U Ultra 162.41 x 79.79 x 7.99
          HTC One M8 146.36 x 70.60 x 9.35

  • My budget is around $350. HTC One X10 or ZTE Axon 7 for $355 at Officeworks

The ZTE has better specs, but HTC 4000mAH battery looks great.

    Any phone gurus, please advise.

    • The Axon 7 is a better buy mostly because you’re getting more than what the X10 offers at the same price point. The Snapdragon CPU trumps the Mediatek one. Mediatek is pretty bad with updating their drivers so receiving timely updates might be an issue.
You also get a better camera on the Axon 7.

    • -1

Note that the X10 will deliver greater - much greater battery life depending on use. While the ZTE phone has a slightly better screen with a 2K AMOLED vs FHD Super Led display, however you pay for it in battery life.

The ZTE hasn't got a bad battery life, its average. Just that the X10 has got a excellent battery life, one of the best at this price point.

One thing though, is that the HTC X10 has the slightest camera bump, so will probably stop you from putting it down flat on a flat surface.

  • Did they fix the headband issue on the Sony's? I had the MDR1000x, but after 3 months had to return them as the bands cracked and split. Switched to QC35, and they just don't compare to the Sony's noise cancelling and sound quality at all. It has made me sad. Definitely want to go back, but only if the headband issue is resolved on this model.

    • There was a revision I believe, with a different model number and all.

    • +2

Sony has used a different material for the new WH-1000XM2 than the older MDR-1000X

  • But don't you think that Samsung s6 is the better deal out of all?

    • If I didn't want an SD card, I might as well get an iPhone lol.
Don't know what Samsung was thinking that year…

  • +1

+1 for the Sony WH-1000XM2 headphones. Love the atmospheric pressure sensor, the headphones automatically adjusts for cabin pressure, very useful on flights. AptX support is a must-have in 2017 (LDAC if you have the latest Android).

  • Heads up -

I went to JB not long and asked for a deal on the 1000xm2s. 5 minutes, the guy got back to me with a sweet price of 399. Went home and thought about it.

Next day, asked a friend to come with me. Went to JB again, said I was offered 399 the day before, and whether they could give me a better deal if we bought two. Picked both up for $370.

But now, I have two other friends wanting the same headphones. Imagine the deal if we bought four at once. Hehe! This was the day before JB's $10 cashback deal too… sigh

  • +1

I'm tempted on G6 but paying $600 after paying $470 for one from overseas I had to return a few months ago still seams a little high even with local (2 yr???) warranty
Nearly bought the better V30+ from JB last month but stocks ran out very quickly and no idea when more stock coming in. ( I was stressing about paying $1200 for a phone though, no matter how good it is)

  • +1

Any deals on the V20? been eyeing them for a week now.

    • -1

V20 was added to bootloop class action lawsuit. Also happened to me personally.

  • I can't find any reviews for the X10, only pages with spec comparisons…

    • Found this, could possibly be a reason as to why there aren't any real reviews?

Unfortunately, it's currently only available in Russia and, from 17 May, Australia. But as the manufacturer did eventually bring its predecessor, the HTC One X9, to Europe we could see this new device on these shores in the nearish future

      • Thanks for your info. Still deciding between this X10 offered here and the U Ultra…not having much luck with finding any proper reviews for the x10 doesn't help in convincing me to pull the trigger on this offer, so i migth wait and go with U Ultra if a similar deal to the one at JB last week can be found again for $399…unless someone here can tell me that the X10 is MUCH better than U Ultra? ;)

        • Was going to edit my comment but you replied first.
          And this:

The problem is, HTC isn’t releasing it in the US

Yeah a tad dated, but no real news on it past May. Quite a few Youtube videos though.

Personally I would buy the X10. It seems like an awesome phone for what I've been reading and there are always captions like "the best phone you can't buy" or "HTC's best phone of the year is only for sale in 2 countries". |
My main thing in a phone is battery life, so its an easy pick. Plus I love that metal construction :) What's your main thing in a phone?

Also - does the U Ultra not have a headphone jack? (means no FM radio as well)

        • @pennypincher98: I don't mind not having the 3.5 jack…i want a phone that will take good photos in poor light conditions (indoor) and one that doesn't heat up too much after use. My current M8 is nice, but it does heat up and camera isn't the best. U11 is out of my price range and I don't see it dropping to $348, so it's between U Ultra and X10.

        • +1

@Ringu: Ok with those preferences considered I would probably go with the U Ultra - I can't see glass heating up as metal would during (heavy) usage.
The camera is most likely better on the U Ultra than the X10 as well, but it is in ultrapixels (I think, like M8?) Battery life is not the best though, so pack a power bank.

        • @pennypincher98: Thanks for the advice. Hopefully the U Ultra will drop down in price again.

        • @Ringu: No worries :) Yeah hopefully, are you needing a phone as big as the U Ultra though? 5.7 inch screen, bezels + a secondary small screen up the top for important info means this is quite long, and quite wide (certainly bigger than the U11, closer to the U11+ which is 6 inches with smaller bezels)

        • @pennypincher98: No not really, but if it's better than the X1- at this price range then i don't have much choice…unless i wait for a big price drop on the U11, but I doubt this will happen.

        • @Ringu: Have you considered the U Play? I believe that's a reasonable price atm. $329 for the 32gb version and $349 for the 64gb at Dick Smith/Kogan meaning you can easily get another $30 off, taking the 32gb version under $300.

          Alternatively I think JB/HN are selling for $399 (32GB)

  • +2

Hey Rep, missed your WTF deal on S8. doing another one soon? Cheers!

  • Does it have built in call recorder or can we download app on it.

    New to android

    • +1

In the words of Steve Jobs, quite ironically, "There's an app for that"

I'm not sure which you are inquiring about HTC X10 or LG G6 but either way if it does not have a built in call recorder, there would surely be an app you can download for it.

  • +4

will there be another s8 or a S8+ deal?

  • Headphones have local warranty?

    • yep

  • I missed this deal! Rep please do the Sony WH-1000XM2 Headphones again and I will buy.

Dont be scared to go cheaper as well =)
