Netcomm Wireless Router - NB504 for $8 Clearance at Officeworks [NSW]

550

Hi all,

I was at my local Officeworks store and realised the Netcomm NB504 was in the clearance bin for $8.00. The tag on the box was $18.00 but at checkout it came to $8.00 a pop. I picked up a few to set up as wireless access points around the house (trust me, you won't know how bad wireless signals get cut down by double-brick walls).

I asked about warranty and they said it comes with 1 year standard (+2 years with online registration). However, I'm not sure if this particular product is on clearance around the state but you can easily go and check with your local officeworks. Details for the one I got it from is on the receipt (in the image).

You definitely can't go wrong at $8.

PS: This is a router with NO BUILT-IN ADSL MODEM. It would act decently as a wireless AP.
PPS: Cheapest I could find one elsewhere is $35 at MSY.

  • nice one

    • Even sweeter with my team member discount :)

      • Oh sweet, another OW team member on here

      • by local u mean where u work right?

        • My brother works at Coles and gets an extra discount card to give to a family member.

        • ah lucky you

  • Are you sure these function in Access Point mode? Not all Wireless ADSL routers support this, that is they only support connection to a WAN (not a LAN).

    Great deal either way.

    • From the site:

"The NetComm NB504 54Mbps Wireless Router integrates a firewall, NAT-router, Wireless AP and is designed to be a dedicated Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) Wireless network solution."

I'm pretty sure it does. You'll just need to have it correctly set up. I've got my wireless modem connecting into a switch directly. I'm pretty sure connecting a lead into the switch won't make much of a difference. Either way, I'd be able to configure it to bridge with certain ports.

I've also checked with a few Whirlpool posters and it is apparently configurable as an access point.

  • Saw this at $18 a while ago, but $8 is a really a good price. My wifi signal isn't too bad at home, I guess I'll leave it this time.

holy crap. an Ethernet cable costs more than that!

Great deal! These are ok too, I put one in a family member's house & bridged their Speedstream 4200 over a year ago & it's been crankin' ever since! ;)

Lol, I got that one off the bargain table at Orificeworks too…$34 IIRC though, which I suppose was pretty decent at the time! :)

    • +3

Oh yeah. I paid over $200 for my first wifi router not that many years ago.

      • +1

I remember my NB5580W retailing for around $400 or something many years ago.

  • I checked with another OW looks like these were just a few left over at Wetherill Park. Not available at other stores.

    • I'm sure there's a reason for why they've placed it on the clearance table. It wasn't damaged or ex-shelved. I think Netcomm will be releasing they're new line pretty soon which explains why all the Netcomm products were cleaned off the shelves.

Print out the receipt and try to get it matched. If they can match products from other stores, why can't they match their own products? Like I said, the ones I picked up were brand new and weren't different in any way to the shelved items. It even scanned up as $8 without the need for any adjustment by the staff.

EDIT: If they have any stock of it of course.

    • Wetherill Park branch is very close to me. I might duck in tomorrow after work and buy them all :)

      • +1

Just bought 3 at Wetherill Park at 10am, there were 3 left when I left.

When you walk in its on the left under the clearance table. Good Luck

        • Called them too-they are out as per the lady-she was looking at the table when I asked this

        • I got to Wetherill park at 4pm there were none left. The guy at the store didnt seem interested in making the effort to tell me of other stores which might have them

  • Hmmm OW Chadstone said they're all gone (was just on phone with them). Said it ran out within the last week.

I was in the store a week ago and was looking in the router section, hmmm.

  • Does anyone know if I can use this to extend my wireless by using wireless?

    • Yep, just set this one up as an Access Point, and change the wifi channel on either or both so they're at polar ends of the spectrum; i.e. if this one is set to ch11, set the other to ch1 so they don't conflict! ;)

There's roughly a zillion tutorials out there on how to do this, google is your friend! :)

  • Just called Old Guildford hoping to get 2-3 to outfit my house as well. Unfortunately all 30 have been sold. 15 to one customer apparently.
Yes a post with no value but still had to be said

    • and any bet is that those 15 will end up on ebay or in a small computer shop with some astronomical markup attached, which people will inevitably buy/get duped.

    • I called up Old Guildford in the morning around 730am. They mentioned they had 20 in stock and that i wouldn't need to put it on hold as they had plenty.

Because i had been out all day i had put 4 on hold which the guy said wasn't a problem (i have 3 other friends who wanted this, so no im not one of those who would sell them on ebay). when i got to the store at 8pm tonight a guy mentioned that the manager said he had another customer commiting to buy the 2 and i was only able to get 2 of the 4 i put on hold. No stock was put on hold for me so i was pretty much a walk in customer. The guy was actually the manager of the store but didnt want to own up. They had said they contacted me telling me that i would only be able to get 2, which they didnt.

The staff there i guess are taught to lie to their customers.

Congrats on getting it. Sorry for the below rant-I know this is not a forum.

Yeah I don't how much of what has been said by anyone is the truth. Basically got told by another shop (who did a search) that there were 30 at Guildford, 2 at Liverpool, 6 at Wetherill and 2 at Monavale.
I called Guildford and he said he was sold out (due ot someone getting 15). He then checked the packaging to see if there were any others in Sydney…I asked if I could have the one on which he was checking the pricing on but said it was part of the 15 that were put on hold.
I called him out on how unfair it was to give someone so many of a cheap clearance item knowing that several have called throughout the day asking for this item-he just said that the manager had approved it.
This all happened seconds before I made my first post (annoyed).

Unfortunately I can't accuse anyone of anything (I wanted 2-3 anyways due to aforementioned double bricking). maybe they are buying for a bunch of people or they live in a lead walled house (maybe enough signal could eventually break it).

that was me, I requested 15 of them to be put aside so I could use them at our Guide Hall and so we could also do a bit of an IT class for the Guides on network setup etc.

Unfortunately (for our troupe) the store manager called me back today and said they could not hold them for us as they'd been pressured by customers being agro in store and complaining to head office.

So enjoy the cheap wireless routers, I hope you manage to get in store before they all clear out again.

Nice attempted troll champ, but you've been caught out - these guys are discussing Guildford NSW, NOT VIC! :p

        • No I didn't get any. When I had called they were all allocated. I whinged at the time (on the phone with no aggression) but did not expect or request anyone to go back on their previously held agreements with other customers.
          Sorry for your troupe.

I have found these bin clearance post are complete waste of time for most of us.
The amount of money saved for those that managed to get it will not be able to compensate for the time and petrol wasted for those that are silly enough to visit their store in hope of getting the same bargain.

    • Well, not really. If you are aggressive and call around and then jump in the car you shouldn't miss out. Unfortunately most of us work weekdays, which is why I missed out.

  • Well I picked up a great bargain and all to the credit of this post.
Gonna make Wifi AP point for all points of my house.
    Great!

Just to clarify the warranty situation. The NB504 is an EOL product. It has been replaced by the NP800 series (see here). As such it is eligible for the standard one year warranty. It is not eligible for the extended two year warranty.

They are clearing these out because they are replacing all these network products with wireless N models. My local officeworks does not have any wireless G products left.

As everybody knows Clearence items mean that they have limited stock, or non available so no doubt difficult to find. Unless you call head office and find out what stores have stock.

  • there's a few at wollongong

    there is none at punchbowl.

  • So can you use prepaid wireless internet on this?
