  • anyone know if those woolies prepaid cards work with Tiger to escape the $7 CC fee?

    • +1

Aren't those woolies prepaid cards, visa/mastercards anyway so they still have a CC fee.

  • +6

Just price match with Jetstar. MUCH better.

    • tried with qantas, virgin blue, etc. try said no :(

  • does jetstar still have flights in the time frame? Last time i looked there was none even close

    • avv-syd, syd-bne

  • has anyone joined the stripes thing??? Wondering whether to join or not???

    • I can't even work out what you really get out of it that makes it worthwhile. It's $30.

    • i doubt it would be worth it

      • Is it $30/year ie an anuual fee ?

  • how do get to Melbourne City from Avalon?? Is there a transfer shuttle bus or something?

    • As i remember, when i caught a flight to Avalon, only way back to Melbourne City was by a bus which cost like $20+, so was pretty expensive.

    • +1

There is a shuttle bus that goes to Southern Cross Station. Apparently is starts from $20:

More info on travel options on the Avalon Airport website:

      http://www.avalonairport.com.au/to-and-from-the-airport/tran…

      • +2

I'm not a fan of the Sita coaches website - apparently fees start from $20 yet to book, you need to enter your credit card number so you can be charged as part of requesting the booking.

Any company that does not explicitly state the total cost of the ticket (not "from") before I purchase their goods doesn't get my business.

    • thanks for the tips!

    • Depending on your time of departure and the number of travellers, it may be possible to take a VLine train from Southern Cross station to Lara station, then get a taxi from Lara to Avalon.

VLine ticket = $5.80 (off peak) per adult
      Taxi fare (estimated) = $15

      Comparing, that means:

      1 adult = $20.80 (train/taxi) vs $20 (bus)
      2 adults = $26.60 (train/taxi) vs $40 (bus)
      3 adults = $32.40 (train/taxi) vs $60 (bus)

Obviously time is worth something too, and this probably works best when you're going to Avalon (and can ring a taxi in advance to ensure it's at Lara waiting for you) as opposed to leaving Avalon and trying to connect with the VLine service after the taxi gets you to Lara.

I got $27 as the estimated taxi fare from Lara to Avalon.

        http://www.transport.vic.gov.au/DOI/Internet/vehicles.nsf/Al…

        • Thanks for that link - I didn't know about that site. I got $21 for the fare (picked noon as an off-peak fare) but either way, still more than the $15 I was estimating.

Your taxi trip at: 12:00 PM
From: Hicks Street, Lara Vic 3212
          To: Avalon Airport
          is estimated to cost:* $21
This trip is based on a distance of: 9.14km

Seems reasonably accurate too - I compared it to a couple of recent taxi journeys at known times and it was within $1-$3 each time.

        • For the record, now I have done this trip personally…

          • 2-hr Zone 1 Metro train to Southern Cross station = $3.70
          • VLine ticket to Lara = $5.80
          • Phone call to taxi = depends on your phone plan = $0.20
          • Taxi from Lara train station to Avalon airport at midday = $18.30

          Total cost = $28.00

I had to wait less than 5 mins at the Lara train station for the taxi, so it was not a difficult journey.

How do you get Jetstar to waive the credit card fee on the match or beat offer?
Do you have to pay with a mastercard debit? As that card is free with Tiger.
Also can anyone please confirm Tigers fares do fall with-in 1 hour of Jetstar for the match or beat?
    I flew tiger last weekend.
Avalon to Sydney (DELAYED 1 hour 10 minutes) Sydney to Avalon (DELAYED 1 hour 20 minutes) They charge to much to check in bags so everyone takes carry on bags making it really hard to find any space in the overhead compartments. We ended up putting our bags at the front of the plane and we were at the back of the plane.
On the return trip we made sure we were one of the first on board so we could get luggage space.
It was my first time flying Tiger, I don't think I will do it again.
Jetstar is on time most of the time and much more professional!!

  • i fly tiger all the time, with good results. Jetstar gold coast 2 syd i was delayed 2hrs last week. So they also have lengthy delays. However tiger are charging crazy prices to check on luggage!!!!!

  • I looked at some flights from Sydney they are not available on Fridays and Sundays. No deal!

Edit: Actually after a second look, there is no $9 flight available on Fridays or Sundays at all !!!

  • .

  • Can anyone find any $9.95 tickets at all? I tried all kind of dates and they only seem to show $19.95!!! Could someone please share how to get this booking done?

    • I find it hard to believe that they are all gone, mabye they just have not loaded them.

      EDIT: found some canberra flights.

  • cannot find anything syd-bris!!!!! Can anyone see any???

  • -2

  • Yup. Just got SYD-AVV weekend return for $17.92 per person - very happy! Thanks Skystar!

  • +1

    Thanks Skystar!
    Brisbane - Sydney @ $17.91 :} return went with Jetstar :}

  • got 5 return tickets from Bris to Mel for 89.60!

  • Got 2 return from Bris to Mel for $35.84 and then CC fees hit - $64.64 later… JetStar wouldn't price match because I couldn't find a flight that left within an hour of a Jetstar one… The lady hung up on me too, rude cow.

  • booked a flight today w/jetstar. they beat the other fare by 10%. the main concern is on my online itenarry its asking me to pay $56.50. the total price $79.00

i agreed to pay them $22.50 which seems to be deducted but its the $56.50 that has me going what.

the price difference fare i agreed to is $22.50

i rang them up and they said dont worry you wont be charged. has anyone came across this.

    • Mabye give them a call back and chat to another operator, that isn't the way its usually done..

    • When I price matched it was flagged on the system that I hadn't paid enough so I couldn't check in - the customer service desk sorted it out pretty quickly though. If it's still saying you need to pay it the same might happen to you.

    • Yes, this happens everytime I have price matched. Just leave youself an extra 15mins to check-in. I always get delayed at check-in while they verify the ticket but i"ve never been asked to pay anymore.

  • service sucks. the amount of horror stories i've heard about tiger cancelling and people scrambling to get extra flights only to have to fork out 400 dollars on another airline for a same day flight.. yeh well thats your bargain. bet that was worth saving 50 bucks for :P

glad its never happened to me but everytime i've flown with them. delay delay delay

Pay the extra for another airline. I wouldn't want to be one of those guys that get stranded and being put on another tiger flight 3 days later.

  • Thanks. Booked return to Tullamarine from Sydney for $75 by Jetstar. Paid with Amex so 250 bonus points too from other ozbargain post :P Got the 25 flight one way and 58 the other. Seeing its a weekend, quite happy with prices.
