Where to Fix Non - Booting Computer Cheap?

My computer is broken… won't boot. Don't know which part is faulty after I switched from a mid size case to a large case.

How much to find someone to detect broken component to replace so I can fix my computer?

  • ozb will troubleshoot it for you

try describe 'won't boot' in more detail

is the PSU fan running ?

    does it beep ?

    any post screen ?

any hdd activity led lit ?

    • Yep especially check that you have the motherboard headers connected properly otherwise pressing the power button may be doing nothing at all.

    • PSU fan is running.

Dell motherboard from Studio 1535 desktop.

6 quick beeps followed by 5 beeps.

      No post screen.

      Not sure on HDD.

      • Apparently the six beeps is a video card failure.

Five beeps means the CMOS battery is flat.

        https://www.parts-people.com/blog/2014/06/30/dell-studio-15-…

The beeps codes usually don't vary between models in a series, and even tend to stay the same from a manufacturer.

        • Could be damaged video card as I removed it and replaced it quite frequently.

I replaced CMOS battery so a bit strange.

        • @ML11:

You usually still get the beeps until you go in and update the CMOS settings - a bit hard without any display.

  • Just basics here but open the new case and make sure everything is plugged in. Do you get any noise at all?

    • PSU and case fan is running on full power.

Dell motherboard from Studio 1535 desktop.

6 quick beeps followed by 5 beeps.

      No post screen.

      Not sure on HDD.

  • I'd start with ensuring components have not dislodged. Is the power button correctly connected to the motherboard?

  • Check for earthing issues. Make sure the earth screws are connected to the case?

  • I switched from a mid size case to a large case.

Did you just slot the whole midsize computer into a large case? :)

If the fan is not spinning, check the power supply to motherboard and power button connected correctly.

If you can hear beeping, try to identify the beep code. https://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm

If you can see something and it says non-bootable device detected, check hdd connection and sata power cable connected properly.

    • No I took out the components and installed it. I changed a few parts already, people say it might be the RAM but i'm not sure. ALl parts are quite new apart from the motherboard. 6 fast beeps followed by 5 beeps for DELL motherboard (studio 1535 i think). No post on monitor.

      • No POST on monitor, Fan running.

Check your graphic card. Are you using external PCI-E or on board graphic from the motherboard?

        • I'm using a high end graphic card which I slotted directly into the 16 slot motherboard from memory

        • @ML11:

Maybe try to remove the graphic card and reinsert it. Make sure you graphic card is powered properly, as it's high end ones. Check whether the graphic card needs external power supply or not.

If all don't work, try remove the high end graphic card, and use the onboard ones. See whether it helps.

        • @ausdday:

I've got a 750w psu which is sufficient for it as it worked before.

I tried removing and reinserting. I don't have a spare one to test if its faulty though :(

Not sure how to use onboard one. I don't think the dell mobo has one?

Sorry not so tech savvy, I thought it'll be a simple switch components to a new case and it'll work.

Some parts were dodgy before so I replaced the PSU and ram a few times (maybe the ram stuffed up again).

I got a feeling it might be the motherboard because it's the oldest component thats not been replaced (over 7 years).

        • @ML11:
If you are using a 7 year motherboard, try to check your new high end graphic card, make sure it can backward support old motherboard PCI-E spec.

Check whether your PC has a VGA output connector, except the one from the graphic card.

  • Gotta be honest, the OP being a true OzBargainer here - getting free troubleshooting help for something that will, in all likelihood, cost him more in service labour to fix (at retail prices) than it would to replace completely :)

If you did something and it stopped working, go back. I.E. Pull it all out and start reinstalling every part, cable, screw again. You may very well find a screw lodged behind the motherboard shorting something out. Put it all back together on the desk, out of the case, see if it boots with the bare minimums.

    • Tried this. I suspect damaged CPU fan, RAM or motherboard. There was some sticky liquid I found inside the CPU cooler so I washed it using water lol… probably not the best idea but seems to be working ok just not booting.

I think that's normal and probably from some sites you visited.

  • Try clearing CMOS

    • I cleared the CMOS battery. Did not solve problem :(

  • I bet you the power switch on the PSU is off.

  • Maybe I can get some troubleshooting here first before I get someone to have a look. It's been unused for about a year now… really want to get it fixed.

6 quick beeps followed by 5 slower ones. Fans are on full power (not idling). I didn't use anti static gloves when replacing parts. I'm not sure if I grounded it properly either for the screws.

Would be life changing if this can be fixed because I'm currently unemployed and need a computer so i can start doing things much quicker. Using my phone now :(

    • 6 beeps = graphics card problem

5 beeps = Real Time Clock failure - usually fixed by replacing the CMOS battery

Following past comments you should have done the following by now

      1. Reseat GPU
      2. Check power cabling to ensure all components are getting power
      3. replaced the CMOS battery
      4. Clear CMOS
      5. Try booting the motherboard outside of the case.

Step 5 is quite important as sometimes the case shorts out the motherboard if you forgot to use standoffs. The metal casing conducts electricity so if the motherboar'ds backside is touching the case, it'll short circuit. Test the motherboard outside of the case first.

The next step is to troubleshoot the GPU itself
If your computer has built in GPU (that is, it does not require the graphics card to work) you could try taking the GPU out and then powering on the system with monitor hooked up directly to video out on mobo.

Also are you sure your PC is a dell Studio? Dell stopped making Dell Studio desktops a long time ago, ending in 2011 I think.

      • Yeah I bought it in 2010/2011.

It could be standoffs! I just screwed in the motherboard, what are the standdoffs like?

I replaced the CMOS battery already, so it could be faulty motherboard?

Don't spend too much money trying to fix this old machine. Even after replacing the affected part, it's hard to say whether or not it'll continue working afterwards.

If you want to spend money, buy yourself a new system (or a cheap, refurbished one from eBay). See this deal as an e.g
