        • @jeozb:

It's terrible. I have no phone line (new house and the developers were/are morons) so the only internet I have is super congested vivid wireless until Nbn comes in June 2018, which again because the Optus coverage sucks I'm only able to get 2/5 bars in the top of my walk in robe and 0 signal anywhere else in the house.

        • @dfitzpatrick: before I got vivid wireless I was using half price sim cards in a 4g usb modem, and have tested Optus, Telstra and Voda. The only one that's usable inside the house is Voda, which is ok because it just happened to be who my wife and I were with for our phones before we bought the place.

Just means I'm stuck with their network, maybe one day another Vodafone MVNO will offer some decent plans with international inclusions. At the moment Voda themselves offer the best value in that department.

        • @bonezAU: Get an Optus mobile broadband SIM, a modem, and external antenna? And connect your devices to the modem via wifi.

It's faster than NBN for many people. And my pocket wifi inside my house gets 3 bars, that increases to 4 bars if I take it outside. So if you have 2 bars, you should get at least 3, maybe 4, with an external antenna.

Get one of the Optus plans posted in the last couple of days here that come with a free tablet, sell the tablet to bring the monthly cost down over 24 months, and get a cheap phone SIM somewhere. You won't want NBN, LOL.

        • @GregMonarch:

I've already got a 4G WiFi Router (a TP-Link) and an Optus prepaid E3372 USB modem, that's what I was using before I got Vivid Wireless.
The problem is, whenever I'm using an Optus SIM, it insists on spending as much as it's time as possible locked onto the 2300MHz band, which is the same band that Vivid Wireless uses. That particular band is extremely congested in my area.

Vivid tell me that there's no plans to upgrade it and there's nothing they can do about it, so if I wish to continue paying $89 a month for it then I'm welcome to but they won't listen to me if I complain about speeds.

I've used the same Optus USB modem (which is sold unlocked) with Voda SIM cards (especially the Kogan deals when they were super discounted) and it's brilliant for both signal and speed, but I need more than 15GB a month.

I'm basically stuck with Vivid now unless I want to spend $500 on getting a different company to install fixed wireless, and then if I do that I'll be paying around the same $89 per month for a plan with a crappy quota.

NBN will be coming in April-Jun next year so I am planning at this stage to just stick with Vivid, because it is usable, just not great.

        • @bonezAU: Hm… It's a cat 4 device. I've read a few people say smaller/cheapie dongles give less speed. Maybe a directional antenna (yagi) and a more expensive/higher cat level modem - don't know anyone with either? Or buy one/both cheaper on ebay, and if they don't work - resell again for about the same price so you didn't lose a lot to find out?

I've forgotten all the bands now - does it have the correct ones?

I also remember reading some dongles keep falling back to slower bands unless you lock them to specific bands (after you 'telnet' to their settings via the browser)?

Maybe pay some bikies to drive a bulldozer through the tower (so a new one gets built).

    • LoL. 16 years I was with VF and they would not give me a single cent off the advertised pricing that any Joe off the street could get. Wouldn't even consider matching Optus pricing on a very similar deal. Safe to assume that I switched! ;)

  • will it remain at 30 /month after the 12 months?

  • I have just st finished my 12m sim only term from Nov 2016!

This deal says mobile Tv. Does that mean unmetered Netflix/Stan etc? (Usually a $10 charge)

Also, the last few weeks, has anyone experienced problems making calls, then the dialing tone gets louder, but the other party can’t hear you? Or even if the call connects but then switches back to dialing mode!!!

Apparently it’s related to their 4G tower upgrades across SYDNEY.

    Hold the phone team!

Got something promising going on Live Chat!
Sienna R is potentially signing me up as a recontracting Optus customer.

Cool bro. Hopefully other chat agent knows that.
My 5yr+ experience says Optus customer service is at customer rep dependants.

    • Were you out of contract?

      • Yeah I had exceeded the 12 months and was just "freelancing" I guess hahah

    • Did you manage to get re-contracted with the offer? I'm in the exact situation as you, finished up the 12m sim only deal a while back. No luck with the reps so far - all try to push for a new number.

    • Thanks BTRaynes but I had no luck. I'm on a month to month Optus plan and they wouldn't do it for me. They even said they cannot open links(!) when I pasted your screenshot!

  • +4

Can confirm that after trying 3 live chat representatives that as a current Optus subscriber I successfully signed up to this with 25% discount.
Just need to find the right representative.

    • +3

Having just read whirlpool about this plan I would wait for your bill before getting too excited.

      • +2

Oh I've already have experienced that frustration multiple times, their billing system is ridiculously complex.
However other providers just aren't offering the same deals Optus are lately, so I'm hanging around.

    • wow they gave me nothing….ended up with a new number, i'll buy out my current S8 contract when the new sim comes around

    • Tried 6 live chat representatives

      None of them budged

      • Unlucky mate :/

    • +1

Maybe we should compile a list of reps who honour it? lol

  • I am a virgin customer, am I a new customer to Optus? Can I use this deal?

    • Also with Virgin and have a couple of months left of my current Sim plan and thinking of paying out remainder to switch to this deal.
I believe you/me are treated as new customers

    • Virgin discounted most of their SIM plans by 20% today. I've switched to 15gb for $32 a month this morning. Was worth it for rollover.

      • Yeah I only just saw that and was gonna mention it on here.
I've been in contact with Virgin via Twitter and mentioned I'm looking at paying out and leaving. They asked if they would have a closer look at things and waiting to here back after letting them now about the Optus deal.
But if they offer the Virgin deal you mentioned with no cancellation fees I might take it up.

  • This is probably a stupid question, but is this 15gb a month? Or spread out over 12 months?

Also it says free streaming of Netflix in SD, is there an option in Netflix to stream in SD?

    • +1

15GB per month, and Optus will just limit the bandwidth for Netflix when you have the option enabled on your account.

  • +1

can you use the 10% student discount in addition to this?

    If so, how?

    • it says that the code you entered is not valid. i dont think it will work since a discount of 25% is already applied. the code is valid.

    • +1

No, you either get 25% off OR the 10% student discount. Take your pick…..

      • +1

Not worth the effort and headache to save $6/month for me if that's the case.

  • For clarification since it isn't too clear.
The deal is $40/month for 12 months. Yet the Christmas SIM only sale they have going on applies 25% off reducing it to $30/month.

You may have to try multiple chat representatives. My contract expires next week so I'm re-contracting. My first one declined and said I had to be a new customer yet second time around it was straight forward. Be sure to mention the Christmas sale.

  • Optus Chat Reps:

Emily G - Sorry, this is not available for recontract customers

Lachie R - There's a discount for new or porting numbers

Don't bother with either of the above reps. Just do the old refresher.

    • No luck with MIKKI either :(

    • +1

Can we have a list of people who actually allow the re-contract?

      • Do you really think that behind those "chat" (nick)names there is always the same person?

        • I doubt it's their real names, would assume it's different people though..

    • Andrea, Liam didnt allow it either

    • +1

      Lachie R. Useless.

The frustrating thing is they have these deals for new customers yet offer nothing to loyal customers. So much for marketing 101.

      • Most frustrating thing is Telstra has 10GB for $39/mo currently, while I'm paying $36/mo for 15GB on Optus (and only use ~7 of it). It's only just competitive.

If I was paying $30/mo for this I'd be a bloody happy customer. Originally switched to Optus because it was cheaper to get Optus for at home then prepaid Telstra sims on sales for extra coverage when away from home. Currently this isn't even the case - for $36/year I could be on Telstra dirrectly - cheaper than the $50/year I spend on long-life data recharges.

        tl;dr:
Optus SIM Only + Telstra Long Life Data = ~$40.15/mo
        Telstra 10GB plan = $39/mo
For my use scenario it's not even competitive currently.

        (If they honored deal:
        Optus Deal + Telstra Data = $34.15)

  • So confused…..is mobile tv data free? It says video occurs data charges????

    • tv data is not free, only data throught their apps is free

      • Thanks for the randomrandom reply.
I'm still trying to understand. So they have a mobile tv app, that you can watch tv streaming services through, and it will incur no data charges. Right?

        • +1

If you have the TV pack enabled on your account, you can watch services like Netflix and Stan through their apps without this data being counted. Optus will just limit the bandwidth so it is SD picture quality. It will not be unmetered if you Chromecast to a TV.

        • also consider optus sports app and national geographic app (optus will provide you a new account login info for this)

        • You're supposed to have the SIM in the phone, and view on the phone only, using the Optus app.

But as I said elsewhere here, if it's like Optus mobile broadband - I have my SIM in a pocket wifi, which is connected to my laptop via a micro USB cable, and also connected to my phone via wifi. And although Optus says I can't get unmetered data this way, I do - and so do many other people on Whirlpool (but not everyone). So keep asking (here/WP) if anyone has got it working, and what their setup is. I have an Optus (Huawei) E5876 pocket wifi.

  • They changed the deal, used to have international data roaming of 1gb and unlimited international roaming call and text

    • Roaming was never included in SIM Plans, and just last month they added data free Netflix. I used to work for Optus

      • was part of this deal when it first came up, odd to see it disappear.

        • Optus websites are full of mistakes, their CIS documents are not updated and sometimes they display the wrong inclusions.

  • If you hot-spot with your device, is the music and Streaming still unmetered?

    • Hmm, I would say yes, but they might cut you off with "fair go" in mind.

  • +1

Shit, this is nice. Time to tell Vaya to suck my di….

    • wait till you get the bill; the frustration starts

  • no cigar with my first optus chat - looking to re-contract existing 12m sim only

  • +1

The online chats with these agents are so unbelievably frustrating, you can’t get anything done.

  • Is this free national geographic for the life of the plan? Or only the standard 30 days free?

    • everything included will come for the life of this plan

  • So this comes with free EPL included, yeah?

    • +1

Yeah, you add it on the plan

    • +1

yeah, EPL, world cup and summer of cricket.

  • did anyone currently on the $40/15GB get this offer recontacting for another 12months for $30 ?

    • i would like to know too, my dad just signed up on the plan last month and there was a similar offer just before he signed up and now there's one after he signs up :(

  • So optus no longer does unidays discounts?

    • optus does but price for that is $36 per month for life of the plan. In this deal discount is only for 24 months

  • Isn't the deal with iPhone8 and S8 better than this SIM only deal in terms of overall value?

    • Yes far better. By the time you take out the cost of the iPhone 8, the actual plan is only costing you $14 for 20GB

      • Yes, though it makes sense only if you were to go for iPhone 8 anyway. If one was to settle with a cheaper Android phone, then it isn't make sense financially.

    • Which deal is this?

    • Depends if you think the cost of the iPhone 8 over alternative phones is value for money.

For me, the large screen on my $200 mi Max makes it a superior phone, so I'm saving much more with Sim only

      • Same here. Which budget phone would you recommend to go for? I had Moto G5 Plus in mind but I would prefer to go for a notch above.

Also, how abt selling iPhone 8 64 GB in market and stick to some cheaper SIM only plan that offers 5GB-10GB? How much money is there to make?

  • Trying to recontract to this plan but live chat won't budge. Have tried about 8 times now.
Looks like I'm buying a cheap Telstra sim and porting out/in !

  • +2

I have just been reading through the whirlpool forum on this deal. I can't see anyone who has actually received the deal as advertised ($30 month). A quick read through here shows the same thing. Why would anybody take this deal or do business with optus? This is the sort of shit telstra used to pull, and probably still does. It's only a deal if you pay $30 month, as advertised. Otherwise it's bullshit. It looks like it's bullshit. It also really looks like, from what you've all been say, that the online reps are intentionally misleading. Haven't you seen when they have team meetings before work starts; I'm guessing this is part of the misdirection / misinformation / confusion.

I went through the pain of trying to get the last deal like this being a current Optus postpaid customer .
    None of them would budge.
Told them to port to prepaid then.
Next morning ported to postpaid. That worked.
A ridiculous process but it works.
Saves banging your head against the wall trying to get someone on the online chat with a clue that will do it for existing customers.

    • Thanks mgtra, I was going to do the Optus/Telstra/Optus trick but your idea sounds better

  • No. 1 son signed last month for this deal. Went thru the chat line & got an extra 2G per month. for a total of 17G
    This is a good deal

  • I signed up for the deal online nearly 2 weeks ago and my husband did it the same day. I have still not heard anything about my application I got an email advising that I needed to send a copy of ID that wasn’t provided when I queried this as I don’t drive I have had no response. Customer service is appalling and every time I check they can’t give a response. As someone with no issue on their credit history I am wondering what check or mark it will leave. Last week out of desperation for answers after contacting them multiple times I filled with the ombudsman.
My husband got his SIM card quickly however there were issues porting and he had to speak to them 10 times and wait over 5 days for the number to port
I wish I had known how terrible the experience would be before I changed over!

  • Well the fine print says - "Stream SD video up to 1.5Mbps". As far as I know there is no way to choose the stream quality in the Netflix App. How does one ensure that?

    • Should be in your account settings on Netflix's website.

    • Optus limits the Netflix bandwidth when the option is enabled in your account, it has nothing to do with Netflix itself.

  • Hi guys - some advice please?

I ported out to Amaysim a week ago after being with Optus for 2 years. I know Amaysim is an Optus MVNO.

    Do you guys think

    1) a week away from Optus is long enough for me to come back in as a "new customer"? and

    2) are you considered a "new customer" if you move from an Optus MVNO back to Optus?

Thanks in advance for your advice

    • +3

5 minutes is enough…go for it

      • thanks Kanu :)

    • I did this today, ported out from Optus to Telstra pre paid (took 20 mins) and already signed up for this deal. Now waiting for Optus sim to arrive

      • is it possible for optus 12 month sim plan users?

        • +1

Do you mean change to this deal from your current plan? No, I tried and live chat wouldn't budge. Have to be a new customer

        • @Forskin: damn, these kind of plan always come before my contract expires or after i sign up to a new contract :(

really wanted optus sport, livechat didnt budge last month when there was a similar offer that had expired just a week before my 2 year contract expired

        • @Forskin: is your Telstra Sim working while you are waiting for the Optus sim to arrive?

        • +1

          @GregFiona:
Yep just recharged with the 1 dollar a day offer so I get calls and messages. 100mb mobile data a day though but it's ok for a couple days.

        • @Forskin: Thank you, I will do the same for wife’s phone

      1. Yes.
      2. Hm… Not sure. I remember reading people having problems porting between Kogan and Vodafone I think it was!? They had to port out to a completely different provider first, then back in. Try it, and if you can't, then just go get a Coles $2 Telstra SIM.
  • Mmmm you can't keep your existing number? Is this optus only, because I just signed up with $30 a month and they let me keep my number?

If this is the case, could you not port to another service and then sign up under that new MVNO, thus you'll be registered as a new number right?

  • Does anyone know when does this offer expire?

    • Offer ends 03/01/2018

Maybe telstra will match before then?

  • +2

Beware of shady Optus. I signed up during Black Friday for the same deal. The first bill, as mentioned in comments in earlier Optus deals, will be of around $40. Be ready to spend some time talking to one of the support staff to get it sorted. In my case, I haven't been able to get it fixed yet. :(
