Sony Google Assistant Built-in Wireless Speaker - $199 Delivered @ Addicted to Audio or $179.99 @ Costco (Membership Required)

580

I saw Addicted to audio sales with free express shipping.

I got it from JB hifi with price match because Goodguys and HN don't sell blue one, however I saw the price $179.99 @ Costco Ringwood after purchase from JB, but costco only sells black or white.

I am not sure Retailer like JB or HN, goodguys etc. can match Costco's price, because Costco is membership request and they don't show price online.

How is it compare to Google Home? (in term of speaker quality and speedy update. And everything else).

  • Wonder how this compare to Sonos

    • What HiFi answer:
"With a significant price drop, the Sony LF-S50G could be worth considering - but while it sits shoulder-to-shoulder with the Sonos One (which itself has Google Assistant functionality coming in the new year), it is poor value and struggles to make a strong enough case for a place on our audition list.

Go the Sonos One if you can afford it.

I did get the Google Home earlier this year from Shopmonk and quite like these type of "smart speakers" for alarm/reminder type and limited listening purposes.

      • Sonos one is 50% more expensive though… Decisions decisions.

      • Google Home for Bedrooms and Sonos for living areas maybe?

        • Yes, that is what I think.

I'll be interested to see what you think of the speaker. I'm currently weighing up 2 of these vs 2 of the JBL link 20's to start a Chromecast audio network around the house. I think I'll hold off until the Christmas sales to see what prices do, as well as whether any new speakers hit the market

It's slightly less ($193 inc delivery) at Videopro.

Probably was one of those one's who just paid $199 and realised they could have saved $6.

        • that's ozb spirit fired up, probably neg himself

The sound quality on these is vastly superior to the Google Home speaker. Much louder too. So basically Its better sounding Google Home with a clock on the side as a bonus.

    • Have you got more than 1?

I think it has some limitations - ie. Cannot control chromecast/smart devices..
Might be best to look it up if you're expected the full google home experience

      • +2

Not really, it works the same as Google Home. It just can’t do the handsfree phone calls yet, but that’s coming soon apparently.

Looks like you and @babeface are right.
As of October 13th 2017, chromecast can be controlled by assistant. Can't really think of anything else it couldn't do..

Neat. Might check out some third party speakers then.

It work well with chrome cast audio, I group 2 chrome cast audio and google home mini with this Sony one, play music together with 4 device.

    • Interesting!
I tried them both at DJ, and personally I like the sound of Google Home more (it's warmer sound). Sony was a bit sharp and high pitched. But I guessed it might be affected by the 3 glass walls around the Sony one. Might be not!

  • If Bose soundlink mini III has google assistant (like the QC35s) that would be my next purchase

    • SoundLink Mini has been discontinued, replaced by SoundLink Revolve

      • Really? The revolve’s shape sucks

        • all roundshape now

        • @Jamesx: I take the soundlink mini 2 to work every day. Perfect shape and size. The revolution looks kinda obnoxious.

  • Waiting for Google Home Max

    • Just be mindful that it might cost north of $600 here.

      • Good point. Might look at the Sonos One when it gets Google Assistant or the JBL like 300 as suggested by ebosh

    • JBL link 300 might be a good alternative

Google wants world domination; these might be compulsory soon, so I wouldn't pay for them.

Can I log into my gov with this speaker. Deal breaker for me

  • So is this the same as Google home? But made by not Google…?

    • Yep and Yep - both products are powered by Google Assistant as the underlying search/automation engine
