Looks to be 30% off at big W on Corelle as well . https://www.bigw.com.au/search/?sort=pricewa-desc&q=Corelle%…

Trust me……Corelle is VERY average stuff. And I don't recall it as being microwave safe.

    • Didn't they use to be considered pretty high up in the china range?

      • +1

In my experience, they survive all sorts of drops, bangs etc, then one day you'll just bump it in some unknown wrong way and it explodes into thousands of tiny razor-sharp shards.

        I absolutely hate the stuff.

        • I have a plate that has a 1cm x 4mm chip on the edge. Nothing's happened to it yet. I hate ceramic plates.

And I use them in the microwave all the time to defrost meat.

i put mine in the microwave … it’s fine. i switched to corelle and retired my other plates because corelle seemed to fit into the dishwasher better that i had at the time and my other plates were too large.

yes it’s very average but sometimes average is good.

also make great picnic plates, much nicer than melamine but thin and light.

yes, the mugs aren’t glass like the plates.

      • +3

Just to add, the mug is Made in China, while the Plate/Bowls are Made in USA.

I don't think that it is safe to use in the microwave - health wise. There are many materials we should not use to heat food on/in.
BTW I don't think that Corelle is 'China' either even though it may be 'Made in China'. No idea what it is made of.

        • +3

Corelle's stoneware is ceramic & Vitrelle is glass.

        • +3

sounds like you are insinuating that corelle has bpa or something?

No idea what it is made of.

          vitrelle is glass

if you dont trust this type of stuff in the microwave - you basically cant put other glass in the microwave? what else you going to use plastic? LOL… stone??? OK

        • -1

@voter1: I find the Vitrelle gets too hot when used in a microwave. I just use microwave safe plastic containers.

        • vitrelle, which is a brand name for a type of tempered glass, is actually a poor conductor heat…. i have one of their dishes with handles for cooking vegetable in water in a microwave.

          trick is the handles.

@voter1: No need for the sarcasm. My advice is to just read the bottom of the plates.
          China plates state "Microwave Safe"
Corelle DOES NOT! There 'might' be a reason that Corelle does not state "Microwave Safe".
I don't know why this is the case.
          I am not insinuating anything.

        • +5

@Peck: It might not be on the bottom of the plates but it certainly says it on the box they come in.

        • @Peck:

You mentioned "microwave safe" and "health wise" in same sentence, that's why people commented that way.

I am also concerned about food stored/heated/frozen in containers that could leach chemicals in food.

I would say Corelle is pretty safe to use, can't say the same for using a microwave though ( as in getting maximum nutrition out of food compared to being warmed/cooked in pot or pan ).

        • +1

          @Peck: From the manufacturer's website (https://www.worldkitchen.com.au/6022003.html):

Corelle® products can be used for serving and re-heating food in microwaves or pre-heated conventional ovens up to 350° F (176° C).

        • @Peck: I have been using these plates in the microwave for 20 years. They're as safe as it gets. They're glass.

I think it depends on what you want in plates and dishes. Corelle is perfect for day to day use, and I can't count the number of times I've accidentally banged or dropped one and it didn't smash - these things just bounce. If we'd been using some fancy actual china instead of glass I'd be picking up broken shards every month or so.

  • Just to add, they're very "grippy" when hand washing. Place one plate atop another and they resist sliding.

They stack nicely in our dish rack too. Our thicker plates sometimes jink forward 40 degrees, starting a chain-reaction.

Regret leaving behind a full set ten years ago. Circa 1981, red floral border. It had dainty Vitrelle teacups instead of stoneware mugs.

Does anyone own Corelle with a pattern? I've always wondered if the pattern holds up over time, or if it soon gets damaged by knives/forks.

    • See above, yes we did for 12 years. Google search yielded no matches, but the missus is sure we still have the teacups packed away somewhere.
      Will dig them up hopefully.

As for durability, to be honest we didn't use the set daily. A few times a week I'd say. As the pattern was around the perimeter of the plates, I can't recall any marring from cutlery.

For us that set was a regrettable loss as they were a gift from my grandmother. I'm told she brought the set in her luggage from the US in 1979. We moved interstate in 2007 and stupidly left some kitchen stuff behind.

    • i have a corelle set that is probably 15 years old - with a colour pattern on the inside - nothings changed in that time imo regarding fading or scratching on the plates/bowls.

I think a few cups have some scratches down the bottom probably due to metal spoon stirring. The cups didnt have a pattern on the inside though.
