Are There Any Real Deals on Boxing Day Sales?

I am very curious to listen what others have to say regarding Boxing Day sales. Most people seem to rush to the shopping centers to find bargain and buy in bulk. So my question is it worth going to the shops on the Boxing Day or am i better off going some other time and find similar bargains?

  • The thing I look out for from the department stores is food boxes/baskets. e.g. Simon and Johnson stuff - however, I would wait for a little while after the day as they can become 75% to 90% as time goes on. Also if you want to get your early Christmas decorations/wrapping paper they are heavily discounted.

I think boxing day sales have been replaced by other events like black Friday. They are usually meh unless you are after discounted Christmas stuff. Definitely will not be participating (unless it is online and posted here so I can shop from the comfort of the couch whilst watching the boxing day test)

Sounds like you will be looking out for Dominos Pizza and home delivered beer bargains.

      • Yep, maybe a new kfc promo item as well

My wife works in retail and says its better to come a few days after boxing day when they have had a chance to restock but specials are still available. Boxing Day itself is people fighting over scraps left over from last minute Christmas Eve shopping. Stores don't have enough time for a full restock for Boxing Day.

    • I was out shopping the other day and the salesperson at a store also mentioned it makes little difference between shopping on boxing day or going a few days later when it's quieter, since sales are the same. The only exception is that some stores may not restock certain things so you either miss out on sizes or clearance items.

  • I still remember making a run for it at Kmart a few years ago for Guitar Hero Rock Band bundle (was on here at the time). Then subsequently bought a spare guitar from JBs that same morning for $10 (just saw it under the counter lol)
    (looks like this deal)

    Both were very cheap

There's always going to be major deals, but they're designed to get you in the door to buy other stuff

Boxing day rushes rock! I put on my headphones, turn up the volume, play some metal and pretend I'm in a mosh pit.

Have you been to Lush? XD People fighting over bath products, stealing from others' baskets.

Best story ever was I saw a bunch of girl push another girl into a window to outrun her. They appeared to be strangers.

  • I think better deals can pop up in Jan.

But fantastic deals on Christmas-themed FMCG of course!!

  • I am hunting for a PS4 pro deal…

I always come home with something good, one year I came home with 3 lady's numbers for free! Ozb life

  • Not expecting much after the Amazon flop launch and last year's effort.

Probably not from Amazon AU. Any form of decent deal from that site only seems to manifest itself from a pricing error.

Worked retail Boxing Day for the past few years. You might get a few good sales here and there that's for sure, however I definitely don't think its worth the crowds. Furthermore, they will usually keep selling the stock at that given price until stock runs out meaning you can pop in on the 27th/28th/29th and still get your stuff.

You can find plenty of amazing deals (both online and in-store) through OzBargain through out the year, hence there is nothing unique about Boxing Day anymore. Good example I can think of, setting up for Boxing Day on Christmas Eve. All we did was kept the same price but added the flashy label of "BOXING DAY SALE". People see the sign "BOXING DAY SALE" and automatically assume it has been heavily reduced, when in reality that's the price it has been like that for the past few weeks. Salespeople thrive on telling their customers "it's 40% RRP…great deal" when retailers would sell it for 40% of the RRP on any given occasion.

i just expect an ebay sitewide discount. i am even happy with 10 percent off.

Not worth it in my opinion. Both Boxing day and Black Friday are just a marketing tricks for non-ozbargainers.
Deals published throughout the year on this site are usually better than what you can find on Boxing day.

    • Correct just like Costco. If you are prepared to do research throughout the year you can do better at Colesworth.

They are just trying to get you to buy stuff they couldn't sell during the normal season. As much as I like a bargain, I'm now too jaded from the constant 'best/biggest sale ever!' and 'never to be repeated prices' promos to bother hitting the shops in the sales.

I'd rather be at the beach, or camping (free/cheap entertainment).

You missed one poll option: You wont find me at the boxing day sales.

    • im the same as you. i now totally filter out "sale!" signs because some stores have them up all year around

ive also seen some shops having a "closing down sale" for several months, only to stay open

  • Some years it's good, other time's it's a waste or just average. Last few years I think the discounting happened just before Xmas, so boxing day prices were normal. I still think premium brands are worth going for, depending on the year they have had. The best ones I have been to were in Myers in Brisbane Cbd about five years ago. Harbour town can be good. We went to Robina in 2015 for Myers and David Jones and it was a total waste. I think I'm going to Brisbane Cbd this year and hoping Uniqlo does a few discounts.

  • I've worked retail casually a for a few years during my studies and I've noticed that (at least in my opinion) that the mid-year sales are far better than Boxing Day for Myer and DJs. Mid-years generally come with further % off, while Boxing Day is just mark downs. They often markdown a few days before too so you can essentially get the same deals earlier. If there's a promo on it will often stay the same from a few days before right through Boxing Day/end of year sales, though sometimes (and it's very random) they'll switch it up to a different promotion for a few days to a week after Christmas.

  • You see better deals during fake Chinese holidays. But usually the stores here are flogging off something cheap after xmas. The way they do business means it's better to slightly overstock than under stock popular stuff before xmas so they need to get rid of it somehow. Cadbury Favourites and Ferrero Rocher boxes should be really cheap.
