Received an Opened/Partially Consumed Bottle of Wine as a Gift

Hi OzBargainers,

Today I did a small job for a lady from work after hours. She informed me that her sister would be at her house, as she was finishing work late. I went around to her place and was there around 25 minutes, but could not fix her problem and was not prepared to take any form of payment, however her sister insisted by handing me a Christmas bottle bag.

Upon returning home, I opened the bag and saw a bottle of wine, however I could see that the seal was broken. I lifted it out and noticed it 3/4 full!

Other than saying hello at work, I do not know the lady at all. I'm not sure what to do with it (I'm not going to drink it, at the end of the day I can just buy it for $7 at Dan Murphy's), but I'm afraid that come Monday, she may say something like 'Did you get that bottle of wine?' or similar. I'm afraid that if I did say something to her about it being 3/4 full that she may get embarrassed and I don't want to put her in that situation.

What would you say or do? Have a poll below if you were in my situation. Has anyone else ever received used alcohol or the likes?

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Maybe the % of wine correlated with the amount of her problem that you solved?

Haha no who gets an open bottle as a present.

Give it to a homeless guy

    Use it for cooking.

very weird. maybe the sister didn't realise the other sister opened it and drank some!

    • yep. Maybe took the wrong one from the cupboard.

Just tell her thanks, simple. Don't go into if you have had it or not, if she asks just say no you haven't opened it yet.

You sure you really needed to ask here?

    Hi OzBargainers,

Today some guy from work did a small job for me after hours. I told him that my sister would be at my house, as she was finishing work late. He came around to my place and was there around 25 minutes, but could not fix my problem and was not prepared to take any form of payment, however my sister insisted by handing him a Christmas bottle bag.

Upon returning home, I noticed the Christmas bottle bag was missing, where I discovered my sister had gifted it. She didn't know it was only 3/4 full!

Other than saying hello at work, I do not know the guy at all. I think that this guy will be afraid of embarrassing me by bringing it up. Do you think the guy will just assume the partially empty bottle was the intended gift or should I apologise for the gift preemptively come Monday.

What would you say or do? Please reply with suggestions below. Has anyone else ever given used alcohol or the likes?

    Thanks and Merry Christmas!

P.S. I have another bottle in the cellar that's about a 1/4 full.

      I like this!

    • Sorry, what I meant was that the sister had been told to give me the bottle (wasn't the sisters idea).

  • Ah. I misread and thought she was offering you half bottle as actual payment. It sounds like maybe she was embarrassed and just wanted to do something to say thanks, but giving someone a partially drunk bottle of anything (when it's not someone like family etc) is a bit odd.

I’m thinking either unintentional or the sister was flustered.
Just say thanks if it comes up.

Oh, and I think the title means something else. Maybe ”opened” or partially consumed rather than used (unless the wine was a golden colour).

      • Thanks mskeggs - will change the title to reflect this

This story started off so well until it was ruined by the beverage. Alternate ending:

"Oh, I can't accept your money."
"Then how about ziiiiip this form of payment?"

  • she may say something like 'Did you get that bottle of wine?'

Then just say "yeh I did, thanks". If she ask about taste, just say you haven't had the chance to try it yet. Why do you have to tell her everything? If it's a $7 wine, just dump it and let it go.
