Panasonic UB300 4K Blu-Ray Player $190 at JB Hi-Fi - 20% off

150

Been looking for a 4k player and saw this one pop up at JB for $190, looks about $50 cheaper than the next best I can easily find at Betta. Supposed to be an excellent player for the price, just no bells and whistles. http://www.techradar.com/reviews/panasonic-dmp-ub300-4k-uhd-…

They actually had 20% off all DVD/Blu-Ray/4k players from the major brands 20% when I went in store at Altona yesterday, but YMMV. Also got Planet Earth 2 on 4k Blu-ray for $30, which seemed pretty good too.

  • (Sorry noob question) is it better to buy PS4 Pro as bluray player?

    • +2

No. It can’t play 4K blurays

Although for the extra 60 bucks an xbox one s will do it and is compelling

        • +1

Yeah I thought about that too, but a) I've read that the xbox one s is not a great 4k player (apparently there is actually a difference ;) and b) I've got far too many games consoles as it is and would simply never play it!

But certainly the xbox one s would be a better option for some people.

@Birdseye: fair call, however if you have a 360 you might find you can replace it to a degree if all your games are supported, and I agree with your sentiment but would substitute the word 'some' for 'most :)

  • Still waiting 65" panaoled to come down in price. Targeting 1500 in 2020.

Just paid $164.99 at Costco yesterday. The Samsung UBD-K8500 is $225 (from memory). Decided to go the cheaper as they are pretty much the same, except for no wifi or 2nd hdmi output. Panasonic use the same chip set in all their 4k players. Build quality is on the cheaper side too.
I have an xbox One S, and the stupid thing keeps crashing on just about every 3D bluray when loading the movie (black screen or no signal until you take the disc out). Takes multiple reboots, and trying to skip menu or start at chapter 2 to work. Also annoying when you want to watch a bluray and when you turn it on, there's an update to download first. On reading, its a known issue, that they don't seem to be able to fix even with the latest update. So decided that was it, getting a dedicated player.

    • ok thanks for input, but does it do 4k movies fine/good?

      • +1

Yeah plays them well, 3d and 4k. Only weird thing about it is that there is a red power light on the front of the unit, which doesn't change when its on or off.

        • thanks 4 reply amigo. oh i meant the xbox s, does it play 4k movies well? i know the 3d ones play up

        • +1

@rodie: Actually I don't think the quality esp with HDR is as good as the dedicated player. For $164, it really is worth it. Consoles just seem to suck at being media players.

        • @Sammyboy: awesome!! thanks so much for input amigo. merry xmas

  • Too bad there are no 4K plasmas to go with it.

  • I went for the Samsung M8500 too, picked it up on black Friday deal from Bing Lee for $165 delivered, it is an excellent 4K unit.

  • for those that have a 4k player i came across this webiste. i believe it. whether its bull or not i dont know. its to tell if 4k blurays are mastered in 4k or upscaled

  • Does this unit also serve well as a media player? ie; can map a network share and does well playing streams?
