  • Good for kids but not really practical if you have a smart phone.

On the contrary, I plan to use this instead of a smartphone. I'll be standing near a bunch of drones with their heads in their phones while I'll be staring at my compass as a parody. This will replace the calculator that I currently use for that purpose.

      This doesn't need a battery.

    • I was thinking of attaching one to my budget smartphone that doesn't have a digital compass :)

    Any deals on monocles too?

I'm guessing they're a banned item on ozbargain because they're too sexy.

Is this suitable for the Southern hemisphere?

    • The needle isn't damped so a little tilt isn't going to make a difference.

      • You really know your needles.

    Nobel prize time.

thanks - exactly what I needed! I'll finally be able to stop using the stars to navigate

    • You'll still need the stars at night.

it's almost a lensatic lookalike. I know it's cheap, but I wouldn't bother. You can get a basic silva for $10; fluid filled, accurate, last for ever. I carry one in daypack, motorcycle panniers etc. Because they are oil filled nothing bothers them. Those old school compasses, if they were good, had a lock on the needle when you shut the top so that they could survive constant movement in a pack or pocket - no mention of that in this one. And you have to stop still till everything stops moving; with a silva type you can follow it while walking or running (like in a whiteout). I find a compass useful; orienting a map, where is the sun coming up in the morning, orienting a tent for whatever the prevailing wind is etc. And of course, navigating. GPS, as you all probably know, are good, but do some funny stuff sometimes. If the sun is out, and I'm going in one direction, I'll take a bearing, face that direction, and take note of where the sun is relative to my position (hitting me behind and to the left). If the sun moves from that place, I know I've changed direction. Saves looking at the map so often, and if you're following a track you can match up the direction change to the track on the map.

    • Holy cow, it almost sounds like you wouldn't die in a real survival situation like everyone else will when their "practical" smartphones die. :D

He's a duck. Ducks are natural navigators :)

Anyone else having spam email un-subscribe issues with this mob?

    • Yep, was just about to post this.

Have unsubscribed twice and I still get their spam.
