Mate 9 ! Too good for this price.

    • It's a fantastic phone. I got one a couple of weeks ago as a warranty replacement for a dying Nexus 6p. Great screen, super fast, fluid UI, and even with the 5.9" 16:9 screen, it's almost exactly the same size as a Note 4.

  • Rep: Why is discounted price only on Mate 9 in Mocha Brown? Is this colour less appealing than other colour(s)?

    • +10

      Hi ifonlyiwasyounger,

Mate 9 dual sim AU stock is only available in the Mocha Brown colour. Thanks

Why would they do deals on a product they sell out?

      • count me in for the mocha brown mate 10 pro :)

      • Yep, I'm also in for the mate 10/mate 10 pro!

The Oppo, I wouldn’t buy it if you moved the decimal place to the left once or twice. There is a reason it’s on sale. Well built phone but with no NFC and the worst OS experience and zero updates and no firmware fixes with a locked out boot loader. Can’t even install custom ROMs on it to try and get around the issues.

I wanted so much for the R9S to be a great phone, and it just turned out to be trash. So many bugs. The Oppo site has its own forum that is full of spam from bots because they don’t even care about that side of customer service. Oppo now makes the One Plus range and the One Plus 5 is what the R9S should have been…

    • +5

Seconded on the Oppo issues. I had an R9S plus, just sold it and bought an LG V20. I'll never buy another Oppo. What they've done to the android OS is a travesty. More bugs than a vegetable garden.

    • +2

You wouldn't pay $3.90 for it?

      • +4

Having owned a R9S and R9S Plus, no, I would not pay $3.90 for it. The garbage experience from it is a disaster. It would be a waste of $3.90.

    • +1

I have an R9S and the hardware is great. Beautiful OLED screen, fantastic battery life and the best fingerprint scanner I've ever seen.

Unfortunately like what other comments have said, it's really let down by the unintuitive software, lack of updates and locked bootloader.

      • +2

Yes. I couldn’t agree more. The phone itself is beautiful. It’s thin, feels good in the hand and is very impressive. Lots of grunt and on paper, the specs were awesome at this price range. The fingerprint scanner was the quickest I have ever used…

Then I made the mistake of turning it on…

    • +1

Fully agree. And the alert management is the most stupid thing ever. One can get around with overly eager memory management which shuts down apps at random, but there is no way to change some of the alerts. For eg., gmail alerts will only show up as 2 new messages - with no preview. And there is no option to enable previews. Why ? I don't know !
Can't wait for my kids to break this phone so I can go buy another one.

    • So you are saying they can't be flashed to LineageOS? I have an A77 and was wanting to get rid of coloros and get LineageOS.

      • +2

I wanted to do the same thing. Go to Cyanogen/Lineage and after spending weeks looking into it, it was impossible at that time due to Oppo breaking the Android open source agreement and making it proprietary. They locked the boot loader down that hard that most of the work arounds only allow you to install ColorOS builds. I remember reading about it ages ago, but it was just the scummiest of things they could do.

        • +2

Yeah if they're going to lock down the software on the phone the least they could do is update the bloody thing. Their strategy appears to be to force their customers to buy a new phone if they want a newer Android build. Well I'll be buying a new phone alright, but it won't be an Oppo.

  • LG G6 Deal please. We are ALL hanging out for a Sub-$4XX deal again!

  • Good price on Mate 9. I have a note 4 currently and looking to upgrade.

I love the super AMOLED tho, does anyone know if the Mate 9 display is just as good?

    • I think vodafone stores still have the mate 9 on display.

From personal experience, the mate 9 lcd is really good, also nice and bright.

      • Samsung note 4: 5.7 inches/1440 x 2560 pixels/515 ppi/Super AMOLED
        Mate 9: 5.9 inches/1080 x 1920 pixels/373 ppi/IPS LCD

Based on the above, Note-4 has better screen than Mate-9?

        • On paper, yes. IRL the Mate 9 is slightly superior, because it doesn't have the black smearing that the Note 4's AMOLED panel has. Also, despite the lower resolution, you have more usable real estate on the Mate 9 because you can adjust the size of the on screen elements. This gives a much higher density of information.

        • @thatguyfromthatplace:

Not sure what u mean black smearing……

Adjust the size of the on screen elements? How do u do it? Normally I do not change the screen settings during everyday use of the handset.

I guess this screen thing mostly depends on individual experience and preference. For myself, I definitely feel note-4 have a better screen in real life and on the paper.

        • Listing resolution is a joke.

Lets talk about something that actually makes a difference, brightness.

Gsmarena has the note 4 at an unimpressive 399 nits at 100% brightness.

While they also reviewed the mate 9 and it comes out at a very healthy 665 nits.

        • @toto: Settings -> Display on the Mate 9. There's one setting called Font Size, which adjusts the size of all your text, and another called View Mode, which you can set to small, medium or large. That one controls how big all the on-screen elements are. You can mix and match the two to get something that's just right for you.

Black smearing means exactly that. When you have black text on a white page on the Note 4 and you scroll it up or down, you can see black trails after the letters.
