It even comes with a wire choker, perfect for the survivalist hitman.

Isn't that for sawing through your leg when it's trapped under a big rock or such?

I recognize some of those tools from giveaways by Zapals and GB. The ones where you just pay postage.

It's ironic that most "survival kits" contains poor quality products. The price is cheap, but i hope people don't buy these thinking it will save their life in an emergency.

  • Stuff around with this heavy 'fire starter' or carry a few matches. I know what would be easier to use.

This would be an interesting gift to give to a 10yro to keep them occupied on a camping trip and help them grow to appreciate what is required for a degree of self sufficiency.
I can't think of any real situation where $12 couldn't be better spent in another way to deal with an emergency. Either you aren't worried about weight/bulk, so you can stash a small first aid kit etc. in you glove box.
Or you have to carry it on a hike or even commute, where this is too heavy and bulky.
So odds are this will be left in a drawer in a place where you have a better knife/saw/pliers/bottle opener/lighter, and no need of a whistle or compass.

Ironically, I own almost all these items thanks to gearbest/zapals almost freebies and the odd dodgy father's day present. I hold no regrets at 60c each, but $12AUD could buy a 6-pack!

I have 4 kids and if i was to buy them something to learn about self sufficiency, first thing i would and have taught them is only buy quality things and how to tell quality things. Cost more but like everything in life its usually worth the extra money:)
A good lesson for kids is walk them through super cheap auto and explain the tools are cheap as there pre broken:) hahaha

you don't need to buy kids quality things. mskeggs point is that this low quality kit would be better for a kid to play and learn with, than to have nothing.

people are quick to point out the low quality china products, but unless you have ever considered buying a proper/high quality survival kit, this will be much better than nothing.

you mean a good quality knife, lighter and bush saw:) I dont care what country the low quality comes from, there are times when you dont skimp on quality. Call me silly but a survival pack would be one you would not skimp on if you want to survive:) Sorry but an axe, good flint and a quality multi tool smashes a cheap kit and far better. Just my opinion:)

+1 on the avoid poor quality bandwagon. I got a cold steel survival edge with a hollow handle and stuffed it full of goodies - fishing line and mini hooks, cotton wool, waterproof matches, wire saw, button compass glued on top and a bunch of paracord weaved around the handle. Oh, and the sheath comes with a flint. Cost me under $40 all up, but is certainly very practical.

  • This discussion has got me curious. What survival items do ozbargainers carry with them day to day? In the backpack I carry to work each day I've got
    - nitrile gloves
    - resus face mask
    - triangle bandage
    - bandaid
    - emergency blanket
    - nitecore tip torch
    - basic Swiss army knife with knife, scissors, screw drivers etc

I keep a better first aid kit etc in the car and emergency kit at home etc but the list above is what I carry on my daily commute on the train and while I'm in the office.
