What gifts did you give and receive for Christmas this year?

Merry Christmas! Just curious about what Ozbargainers gave and received for Christmas this year?

I'll start:
Gave - cash to parents (they requested it), bought a washing machine for the family, Estee Lauder gift set for the older sister and Plantronics headphones for the younger sister.
Received - Mum bought a whole salmon and sliced it into sashimi pieces for the family, which was great. I believe my older sister has sent something in the mail as well, which hasn't arrived yet.

    None…life is good..marry Xmas…

  • -2

    Why compare

    • +10

Not really to compare, just curious about other people's gifts. We're usually pretty boring and just give whatever each other ask for, so there's not much creativity involved during Christmas time.

  • +1

I just got this book. Can't wait to read it.

    https://www.amazon.com/What-Fish-Knows-Underwater-Cousins/dp…

    • +1

What does it say about Goldfish in Aquariums?
(I think they are planning something). lol

  • The only gift I've gotten is the German kind, with all this damn homework, literally driving me up the wall.

  • +15

I think the question should be, "What act of religious significance did you engage in this Christmas, apart from rampant consumerism?"

    • +31

I asked Santa for freedom from religion.

      • +11

What a waste, considering you already have it, lol. :D

        • @chumlee:

Anything specific? Or you just don't like religious people talking to you?

        • I'll take your word for it as I'm not an atheist or homosexual

        • @chumlee:

If only the internet were as accepting as you !! Merry christmas and have a happy new year.

        • +1

Oh man you're hateful at multiple levels

        • -1

          @dealman:

          Just a realist, not hateful.

        • +2

          you voted 'no' im guessing?

        • It's not analogous, but yeah, religion is not the basis of marriage or Christmas despite claims otherwise, so I can see the relationship.

        • -3

Lol describing gay ppl as ‘homosexual’ is always a give away… (as the kind of person you are).

        • +3

I suppose this comment is grounded in the assumption that Christmas is of Christian origin. It's not, it's a pagan celebration that was coopted by Christians.

I'm sure they're happy to share the Christmas spirit with you though 😆.

        • -2

@DevilsPredicate: Say What? Christmas was first celebrated by the Christians then with time everyone just forgot about its real meaning and assumed it was just about gifts and giving. Religion??? Out the Window!!!! Sorry to break it to you it first did originate from Christians

        • +1

          @DevilsPredicate:

Are you saying the pagans showed the Christians how, when, and where to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ?

        • @MrB: There is no teaching some people.

        • @MrB: Nope. I'm saying that pagans started the Christmas tradition. Christians later see the bandwagon and jump on board. Not that it matters, but if you're interested in historical accuracy…

  • +5

hahaha all of my work colleagues (at both jobs!) made me out to be the Grinch, since I didn't bother putting a Christmas tree or Christmas lights up, or give out Christmas cards and the like. Then I come on here, and I feel like I'm Santa Claus 😂

  • +2

I find it surprising your parents asked you for cash!

    • +2

I know, I hate giving and receiving cash. Most years they'd say that they didn't want/need anything, but after our overseas family trip and large expenses this year, I guess they've felt a bit strapped for cash.

  • +1

    Socks n undies

    • +2

I didn't get socks for Christmas.. Lucky you!

  • +1

    Nothing.

We don't celebrate Christmas. A lot of the white families in my street did, though. Kids are playing with their water guns and balls outside as we speak.
I did give my two adjacent neighbours a Christmas Hamper. Handmade chocolates, fruit desserts and small cupcakes.

    • +13

A lot of the white families

      How about the non-white ones?

  • +10

It's hard for us to have a big Christmas celebration with small ones.

This year we had Christmas breakfast at a friend's place with her parents who are also good friends. It was lovely. Exchanged small presents - seasonal fruits and the like, and then we all went to our local church.

This year our church held a Christmas lunch for all, especially those who might not have anyone to spend Christmas day with. Next year we might help out by giving the gift of our presence to those who need it.

    • +1

Next year we might help out by giving the gift of our presence to those who need it.

I hope you meant presents and not presence :)

      • +8

especially those who might not have anyone to spend Christmas day with

        Nope, presence.

People in health services like the dr, dentist, physio etc. - Flowers/Wine
    Agent/Manager - Flowers + handcream from MOR/L'Occitane/Jurliqe or a candle
Friend - Harry Potter merch + an awesome cookbook.
Family - Dinner at a nice place.
Pets - Toys, capes and treats.

KK - Nope, generally don't do this or we get them a giftcard/wine/chocolates. Something generic or a small branded gift set e.g. C&E handcreams

He's getting me a book I want, a gift vou for high tea and some tickets (I sent him the link for everything). Everyone else gave me cash because I'm hard to shop for, I'll be buying shoes and tickets for concerts.

  • +38

    Received: chocolate.

    Re-gifted: chocolate.

    • +1

^ True ozbargainer right there! :p

      • +14

Also re-wrapped it in the same paper.

        • +2

Just be careful about reusing the card. I had a flatmate that reused a card. Just tore of the right half and wrote a message on the left half. He was so chuffed with himself.

I was there when he gave it to his sister. She wasn't pleased to have her card half returned to her.

        • If it's from Sweet As you won't even have to open it XD

    • +1

  • +1

Received: gift cards x 4, fry pan, makeup set

  • We all went to Four Seasons Resort in Punta Mita, Mexico for 7 nights courtesy of my brother in law. The trip would’ve cost over half a mil and there’s four families in our extended family, all paid for including food and activities. We gave them back a photo album from the previous trip two years ago (he doesn’t need gifts that have monetary value).

    • What does he do so he can afford that??

    • +2

Only if there was a deal on brother in laws like that

  • +1

Gave Mrs 1/2kg green king prawns & 1/2kg salmon. Lass in the shop laughed when I gave it to the boss & said Happy Christmas.

    Incoming: zilch.
If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.

  • Nothing.

  • -8

Gave sewing machine and bluetooth speaker, recieved drone,200 $ postshop card a nice tshirt and a lovely mug. Had the black family from next door over for dinner. Went fairly civil till the mrs gave the kids raspberry juice..

    • -2

Had the black family from next door over for dinner

Was that extra description really necessary??

Why not just: "Had the family from next door over for dinner"?

      • +8

No. They a literally the 'Black' family. Their last name is Black.

He just forgot to use a capital B so you would not confuse a noun as an adjective.

  • +4

gave : new razor scooter to my first son
received : my second son ( Born on 20th Of Dec but actual due date was 25th Dec ) !!

    • +5

Born on 20th Of Dec but actual due date was 25th Dec

Are you going to be using that line every year to give a single present for both his birthday AND Christmas? haha

    • +3

Congratulations :) Couldn't ask for much more, right?!

      • +1

        Yeap.best gift forever.

    • +5

Recommend not regifting the second son. Frowned upon despite the long term savings.

…but more importantly, congratulations. What a lovely Christmas celebration for your family.

    • +1

    • +2

Jesus, wish I had that kind of cash to splash around. Props to you for your generosity!

      • +6

Thanks for your kind words but these people in my life deserve more than what I gave them. These are just small tokens of my appreciation.

Edit: and thanks to the ozbargain community for finding the deals to most of these gifts.

        • Still nice of you to splurge so much money on friends n relatives..

    • +4

Hello, would you like to be my friend.

  • I am a new staff member (under temporary contract). I thought of giving handwritten personal Christmas cards and small bag of chocolates to people I’m close to at work (also my boss). Received so many thank you emails and messages :). I don’t regret it at all. I am so glad that all of them were touched by my words. At the Christmas work lunch, I gave out bon bons to make things festive. People were impressed haha.

On second thought, I should have given a card to my director… haha (but at least I gave him a bon bon). 😂

In return, I received a beautiful mug (I actually love it), origami trees, three large boxes of Ferraro rocher and a gingerbread plush).

I’ve applied for other jobs just in case I can’t continue. It’ll be sad if I have to leave.

  • +2

For extended family and friends all got variations of the same thing. Google Home Mini, Xiaomi Mi Band 2’s, and Yeelight bulbs/ lightstrips. All items bought on specials over the final quarter of the year.

    Feel that was ozbargainy enough.

  • +18

I'm becoming a father.best gift of my life.

    • +1

      Congratulations!

    • +2

Congratulations… And if your still awake, suggest you stock up on nappies. Huggies is premium, but worth it and on sale at Amazon with 10% cashback in the next 51 minutes.

      • Thanks Harkoliar.

        I'm onto it.
Currently in Singapore for business and found out over the facetime

        • -4

How can your partner be pregnant if you are in Singapore?

        • @Save Medicare: I went there on 22nd December
She's 2 and half months pregnant.

  • +1

Another year of free Ozbargain (hopefully) :D

  • Our family didn't do presents apart from for my niece. It was great not having to stress about what to get everyone. I bought myself an early present in November, an LG OLED. That's kept me occupied so I didn't have to think about Christmas too much.

  • kk gave: 2 potted plants (per her wishlist)
kk got: a novel i wanted (per my wishlist)

    gave:
neighbours: chocolate, nuts, pretzels, wine, small puzzles for the kids
    friends: chocolates, cherries

PS: I got most of what I gave as presents from the prize I won for Xmas comps :D

  • i wonder if someone on the transplant list got a lung or a kidney. that would be a good news story.

  • +3

I got: quality time with friends
I gave: time to look after their kids so they could get stuff done.

    Win/win for all.

  • +3

I dislike receiving gifts because no one in my family scrutinizes products quite like I do. Like a true ozbargainer I read a few hundred opinions of a product before I buy it. Just give me cash or whiskey thanks.

  • none and none people some times forget that it isnt about the material gifts but the gift of spending it with some one, sometimes people dont get to get that gift

    • But what if you don't have anyone, or just aren't wired that way?

  • nasa apollo 11 command module cookie jar

  • +4
