Maggots in Bin Room

We have been getting maggots in our bin room in our 27 unit apartment complex. The pest exterminator came and sprayed and said the area is spotless and the maggots are being brought in possibly by someone leaving their garbage on their balcony before bringing it down. A note has been sent to all residents and tenants but it continues to occur. The maggots are always on the floor just as you enter the room. Short of bikies , CCTV or a security guard can anyone suggest a solution?

Lol at the thought of employing a security guard for a bin room.

Why are you so concerned? Maggots turn to flies then fly away, as long as they are not in your apartment I don't see an issue with the odd maggot here and there.

Dead body in the ceiling above the door?

Why not spray the floor area around the bins with surface spray. It should kill maggots on contact.

The room has been professionally sprayed and I go down everyday with a surface spray and reapply.

You might be harming your health more with surface spray than the maggots are causing.

Thanks for your concern. I’ll take care.

If the maggots are on the floor that means somebody is overfilling the bins, or leaving the lids open and the garbage has become a breeding ground for flies.

You either need to upgrade to bigger bins so as to accomodate the amount of garbage your residents are producing, or you just need more bins.

      This, or more frequent collection

    • We have plenty of bins and none are overflowing. The lids are all closed. We are only entitled to one collection per week and this keeps happening on a daily basis.

If it's daily, it's probably not someone bringing them in.

Most people wouldn't go to the bin room on a daily basis unless it's a large family.

  • That's quite strange. I hope you manage to sort out the reason. I have to admit I'm awfully curious as to how there's constant maggots on the floor.

How long do you reckon it's been happening?

    • It happened once before several months back but stopped. I do wonder whether it is heat related and , as has been suggested bags of rubbish are being left on a balcony before being put in the bin.

If you suspect garbage is being left on balconies then from ground level look at balconies and see if you can spot any?

Is there any signs that a bag has split that is
Has some lazy arse dragged the bag into the room rather than carry it?

    • Good idea but they aren’t all glass balconies and it’s difficult to see more than a couple of storeys up.

  • Leave the lights on in the bin room.

So the maggots can see where they are wriggling?

      • Light sensitivity.

    • It’s common property so lights are always on.

Three things that works for us.
Increase the light. E.g keep the bins under strong lights or in the sun.
Dump sodium chloride inside or/and outside of the bins. This stuff have so many uses.
Drill holes in the bins. This could lead to ants finding their way to waste foods. Any maggots will be food for them.

        • Thanks for your suggestions.

  • Short of bikies

You tried getting bikies and it didn't work?

  • Make Casu Marzu?

    • I’m glad it’s not allowed in this country!

  • units are impossible to reform. the 'nicest' people turn nasty when you point out their flaws. Letters from strata manager were just thrown out when I was on the committee. we were a block of 5 and I separated bins and identified the dirtbags and told them to bag and seal all rubbish but their ignored me. the strata manager suggested paying for someone to come once a week and get paid for putting out and clearing bins. some firms do this.

The bins are hosed out weekly and are now being rinsed with vinegar. The bin room is spotless except for these maggots. The garbage man comes to us. He drives right up to the bin room and empties the bins weekly.

This is why I won't live in a flat, too many idiots that you have no control over.

  • Its and act of god. I perceive the second coming. The end is neigh. Repent I say. Repent now.

  • We employed a professional bin cleaning company to clean all our bins after they were emptied at the end of last week. Two days later the maggots were back. I think we have now tried all avenues and can only hope some cooler weather and continued good hygiene procedures will stop the problem.
