        • @smuggler: Yeah. This is a recourse for PR, you probably won't see any change. But the damage has already been "undone" and "done" in a sense. You were slow, now you won't be. The battery replacements are nothing to do with the issue. Batteries were dying slower, so replacements aren't NEEDED.

It's like giving someone a new bowl of soup when one had a fly in it. The soup was always fine.

  • Judging by the currency, is this for USA only?

    • +1

      Starting worldwide next year.

I did it ebay and youtube for around 10 dollars

Just be aware for anyone thinking of doing this - you could potentially void the warranty on the phone. No biggie if your phone is old and falls out of ACL etc, but if your phone is fairly new, probably best to get them to do it so warranty isn't voided.

I had an iphone 5se (the one where you could choose colours, I forgot the specific model number) and I had a cracked screen. Got it fixed at one of those mobile phone shops while overseas. Anyway a few months later, I went to apple with another issue, Apple were happy to get it swapped over free of cost, but when the technician checked it, they advised me due to the screen being changed at a non authorised apple store, they wouldn't be able to swap it for free, due to voiding the warranty.

I'm sure most people are aware of this, personally I somewhat wasn't, yet wasn't surprised when they advised me of this.

      Food for thought.

Why neg this comment? Ozbargain really ought to make people reply to comments before negging them as well.

I agree with this comment entirely. Although, I did replace the battery on my iPhone 6 myself. I wouldn't be doing it again. They've hot-glued the damn thing to the inside and it's an absolute PITA to replace. Took me > 1 hr of heating and worrying if I was going to overheat something else and wreck it.

    • Same here, but once you check the battery charged cycles on those “Brand New” batteries I bring it back to Apple store.

  • +2

Pretend like its not a problem and then make money from it. The Apple way!

    • -1

They are charging less for it, so how is that making money?

      • you're right. poor apple, scraping the bottom of the barrel.

How about they don't slow it down in the first place?

        • +3

How about letting your device shut itself off when you are in the middle of an important call?

        • -1

          @darthsparrow:

lol. ok mate. Apple is the best.

          I apologise.

        • @darthsparrow:

Can't remember that happening on my 5 year old Android phone.

        • @darthsparrow: I'm in favour of my phone not being bricked like the many LG phones out there. They literally can't boot up because a battery problem occurs and there's no management.

        • +1

@smuggler: You forgot your meds, that's why.

        • @StoneSin:

          Samsung —-> Phones

LG ——> TVs and home appliances

        • @smuggler: I have an S7 Edge. Great phone, great use, etc.

I agree. Samsung are great at what they do with phones. They are good at everything else too, you just have to be in Korea to appreciate it, their external stock (profanity) sucks. Their TVs are nice.

LG definitely (profanity) sucks at making phones. I've never heard of one that didn't brick.. Bought one for my parents, $500'ish Nexus 5X, it bricked after a year. What the (profanity) is up with that.

        • @StoneSin:

Their screens are the best. Their Korean stock is amazing. I agree.

SK hospitals use OLED panels with DICOM calibration and make you jizz when you see an MRI or CT scan on the big screen.

        • @smuggler: It's amazing, stepping into SK and realising that every TV is a brand new model, paid for by Samsung (just give us the advertising) and are all curved, OLED, etc. The airport would have millions of $$$ in TV assets alone, but it's just Samsungs way of advertising so they give them out free/cheap.

Samsung cars are pretty neat too. I like Samsung appliances too but I think LG trumps them.

They're a great company, through and through. Too bad it's run by weird relatives.

        • @smuggler: Nexus 6 throttles below 40% and can't be fixed without some hacks. Don't hear anyone complaining about that. In fact, Motorola come out and say they don't throttle, smh.

        • @smuggler:
I prefer to review these scans alone. Everybody out.

on apple au website it says replacing battery for phones that are out of warranty is AU$119. So with this it goes down to $69? Meh to me it doesnt sound like an apology :(

  • -5

Just get a new i phone. Do what apple says 😉

To all the Apple haters out there, been there done that 🤔 after a lot of money spent on Microsoft and then android. Back to iPhone pleaded Apple to take my $$ so I can use something that doesn’t suck like poo after a few days

    • +1

      Username doesn't check out :-)

  • +8

Cheaper than a class action lawsuit.

    Merry Christmas, you filthy animal

It just makes me wanna go and buy the replacement battery for $29 with $30 cash and say "keep the change you filthy animal".

    • +2

How does doing a program like this avoid a class action at all? Never knew apologies got you out breaking the law in the past, otherwise I've doing it wrong this whole time lol.

      • Not to mention that the case they're putting forward is that they have spent money on upgrading their phones unnecessarily, offering discounted battery replacements doesn't reverse that.

    • +1

Lol you show that 18 year old uni student working at the Apple shop who's boss.

  • +14

Apple has $250 Billion USD of cash reserves sitting in tax havens and they have the nerve to charge us for batteries, because of their incompetence. Lack of responsibility and unwillingness to fund the cost of replacement batteries = neg from me.

    Not a bargain at all!!!
This also might not be available for people who don't have aged batteries.

    • -8

Oh the hate. It must really hurt to be you. Plus having to work with 500 of those devices every single day squashing bugs on them so they are perfect which in turn helps Apple make more money. The irony. Now I understand why you care so much.

    • I mean, I don't know why people are down voting this "deal". I guess for people who wanted to buy a battery replacement at some stage (me), this is a pretty great deal. Not defending Apple, but personally, the timing is good for me.

      • this is a pretty great deal. Not defending Apple, but personally, the timing is good for me.

Because I have multiple iphones for personal use. It should be covered under warranty, but I have to fork out hundreds to fix this issue.

        • go with android then, there are other options.

        • @inevaser:

I am an Android user. iOS is still needed for work purposes.

        • @smuggler:

Because I have multiple iphones for personal use.

You said it was for personal use?…

        • @inevaser:

Shit I meant multiple iphones for business* use in my above comment.

  • +1

Do they really reduce the speed because of battery life?
I suspect they do based on the iPhone model version.

    • 6s, SE, 6, and the update was applied to 7 this year.

    • Their lawyers came up with a story to blame the battery, will be a cheaper payout for them globally.

Far cheaper to charge less for service than organize a global recall of batteries, they have already learnt the lesson from likes on Sony doing such recalls and how much it costed the company.

    • Officially, yes.

For what it’s worth, I have a MacBook White mid 2010 and even with the battery technically at the point where it’s not holding as much charge (I notice the battery doesn’t last as long but performance has not suffered IMO) recent years OS have been running admirably, so considering that my computer is roughly seven years old and still runs quite reasonably and my previous iPhone 6 Plus noticeable lost a lot of performance after updating to the latest iOS, my own feelings is that this is really stretching the friendship.

I get it, eventually things will go slower but do I believe that it’s by its sheer coincidence that my ‘battery’ went to shit just after updating to the latest iOS? Personally, nope not a bit.

    • Not battery life, but the peak current the battery is able to provide, which also decreases over time. It turns out Apple didn't build any headroom into the battery so as it ages it can no longer provide the same current even at full charge. This caused phones to power off even when they had plenty of charge left. As you can imagine this caused plenty of people who were still under warranty, whose batteries had plenty of charge in them, to be looking for warranty replacements. So Apple 'fixed' the hardware fault in software….

  • +4

    Should be free

    • -6

Yup, everything should be free. You should work for free too.

  • +6

How is this a deal! Deliberately slowing down the phones without letting know their customers and this is what they come up with? (profanity) this!

    • +3

Totally not a deal! They created the issue, and now selling the solution

  • +4

    28 upvotes so far??

    1. Ok, sh$t the battery so they will buy new phone.
    2. Ops, got caught, ok, sell the battery half price, still make profit anyway.
  • I paided $120 to get crappy iphone 6 battery replaced. It was turning of at 60% 40%.
    Can I get $90 credit?

    • only when you pay extra but you padded?

    • You should definitely ask. If you still have the receipt and it was done at an Apple store, myself I’d be pushing the barrow on that one for sure.

    • I replaced my iPhone 6 battery just under two weeks ago, went to the store and they told me to call Apple Care as “they are the ones handling the battery replacements”. Called and told them how I paid full price to replace my battery for this very issue and then was offered my $80 refund as either store credit or a direct bank deposit.

  • +3

Would the slow down also apply to iPads? Have an iPad Air 2 and though it’s not slow, per se, you’d imagine that the same process would apply to iPads as it would for iPhones? Both have similar processors and use very similar operating system, if not essentially being virtually identical? I love my iPad but if they’re doing the same funny business with iPads I’d think it’d be fair to get cheaper iPad batteries as well.

    • +3

iPad Air 1 is worst and slow as a dog since iOS 11.
      iOS 10.x.x was much better

      • Urgh. That sucks. I guess we’re supposed to just buy new iPhones and iPads every 12-24 months? ‘Hey folks, buy a new phone when you buy new sheets! /s’

    • +1

I would replace my iPad batter too if they extend the discount for iPad devices.

  • +3

I agree with the above negs regarding Apple being a terrible company (planned obsolescence, not paying their share of corporate tax in Australia).

However, for some reason iPhones continue to have a huge market share and a lot of people will only use an iPhone. For those users, this might be a good deal to save them an upgrade for another year or two!

(For the record, I am an Android user.)

    • They have plenty of arsenal left to slow down your iPhone using other means apart from the battery.
Remember, they have their own hardware and software working together in iPhone so they can do a lot of funny things to slow it down.

  • Thanks for your nice posting, great share.

  • no iphnoe 5s?

    • put a 'iPhone 6' sticker on the back and you may be fine for a replacement

    • Did the webpage stutter?

  • We don't know what the local price will be yet

  • +3

wow…reading the comments. I never understand why some people get so emotional about their phone brand and display such fierce loyalty to big corporate companies.

    • +1

how do you think these companies were able to become giant multi millionaire empires in just a decade by selling smartphones?

    • I tend to agree, but remember brand loyalty and recognition is big business, that’s why these big companies throw so much money at lawyers to savage anyone who’d dare besmirch or dirty or even try and copy their logos and brands etc.

      But yeah, I really agree.

  • Does this include those who have already got a battery replaced? Well they had to give me a refurbished iphone 6 at about a year old as they couldn't remove the battery, Just over a year later and it needs another one!

  • Major issue with retailer - enough said.

  • +3

$29USD for a problem they created themselves? Lol, good one!

  • It will be easier to ask Apple to stay away from Fed square if they plan on stocking so many replacement batteries over there for these replacements

  • +1

Paying Apple to fix their problem.

  • Hmm I have booked an appointment with Apple genius tomorrow to assess my old iPhone 6 which has intermittent unresponsive touch screen after upgrading to iOS 11. Not sure if it is battery related issue, or defective touch screen, or iOS bug:(

  • So if I get this done on my iPhone se. It will trick the new update to not slow my phone down. Making my phone quicker again. A hardware fix to fix a software issue?

    • +2

The iOS update looks at your battery's health percentage. A new battery will not be affected.

      • So the older the battery gets. The health percentage drops. Now the new IOS update will slow your phone down because the battery has degraded. So a new battery will trick the iOS into thinking I have a new phone.
Artificially the iOS is simulating the effect that the phone is getting old just because the battery is degrading. Not because the software/ apps are advancing and needing better components and more resource.

If they really wanted to fix the issue they could patch the update. And let a phone organically get old and slow down because of technological advancement and improvement.

        • And let a phone organically get old and slow down because of technological advancement and improvement.

They're gunning for that $1 trillion dollar market worth.

        • Crazy figures when speaking in billions let alone trillions.

    • The software fix was to fix a hardware issue. They designed the battery too small, after a year it started causing phones to shut down when they still had more than 40%+ battery remaining. To fix this warrantable issue they made the software slow down the phone so this problem was no longer apparent. When you replace the battery the software knows and will speed up the phone again.

Without replacing the battery if the software just made the phone faster it would power down, even with high battery % remaining because at peak speed it draws more current than the battery can handle.

Basically they could have put in a larger battery so that as it aged it still kept providing enough power to operate the CPU at full speed. They did not. This goes part of the way to explaining why Android phones have bigger batteries and why iPhones are about 2 generations faster than the competition. They push everything to the limit so it works the best 'on release day' but to hell with anything lasting the year.

  • +1

Thankfully I upgraded to android so I don't have to deal with this shite.

    • -3

      Upgrade? Yeah, sure…

      • +1

It can be an upgrade for him.

  • +5

not going to help with the class actions. lol

  • Paying to fix a product that the manufacturer deliberately hamstrung? Not a deal in my opinion.

  • +1

Makes me think if the slowdown effects iPads also, as certain models do significantly slow down when a new ios comes out.

  • +2

I wouldn't call myself an Apple fanboy or anything - frankly I don't really care about the debates of what is better.

I've had an Apple Iphone for about 4-6 years now, and although I loved them when they first came out, it's just not the same anymore. I've currently got an iphone 6s plus, which was replaced 1 year in (due to battery issues) and now this is having issues 1 year in. I understand phones are not built to last years and years - but the fact that they admitted to slowing down older iphones - and in my opinion obviously hoping for consumers to upgrade, kind of pissed me off.

It's one thing to do it (as I'm sure all companies are in the same boat) but it's another to just admit it.

My current Iphone has issues and to be honest I've been looking at other alternatives, mainly the pixel 2 (even though that has its own current problems). I guess for me the biggest change would be going from iOS to android. I've used Android before on family phones and it's quite annoying - although I'm sure it is like anything else - learning curve.

If I do swap over, I will definitely miss the ease of facetiming and being able to message from phone to macbooks - although they aren't big issues, due to other programs available.

    • +2

You'll be fine mate. Make sure you add the google account to sync on the iPhone so that contacts etc sync to the Google address. Then when you log into Android all contacts will be there ready to go.

      • Thanks for the tip!

    • I feel exactly the same but I'm scared to make the switch. I really do think this is the beginning of the end for Apple. I was a fan.

      • +1

Just do it! I just got back from JB, got my pixel for $899 with free headphones (they look pretty average) and home mini. plus with trs refund it'll be cheaper.

  • +1

Thanks for the pixel 2 deal posted on ozbargain, now I am with android.

    • Any regrets?

      • Photography APPs are better designed by Apple developers, and there exists no color distortion among Mac, iPhone and iPad. Otherwise no big difference.

        • +1

When u say no colour distortion between the 3 products, i’m assuming you mean if u take a pic on iphone, it’ll look the same on a mac and ipad, compared to., say if u took a pic on a pixel and then uploaded it on a mac, the colour might be distorted?

        • @eltito: Exactly. Consistency is very important in post processing.

  • This should be free in my opinion. My 6s+ had this issue yet because it wasnt in the battery program, I wasn't entitled to a free replacement. This is from a $1529 phone a year into its use, I expect better for that sort of money.

    • +1

I had the same issue, with my original 6s plus and they did a swap over no questions. Apparently I was border line 50% battery health 1 year in, which isn't normal (according to apple rep)

      • +2

They told me mine was fine even though it was jumping 10-20% in the space of a minute. It'd get down to 1% mighty quick, then just sit there for well over an hour. At some point it starts getting mega-stuttery as if the CPU is struggling for power and eventually shuts down. I still have the phone and other then the battery its been pretty good. Also got a 7+ which didnt do this.

If their batteries age so quickly, perhaps they should thinkg about using a better quality battery given the phone is well over $1000+ ? Might save them on support costs and litigation down the track.

        • If their batteries age so quickly, perhaps they should thinkg about using a better quality battery given the phone is well over $1000+ ? Might save them on support costs and litigation down the track.

nah, their strategy is to milk as much $ from iherd with hope they buy new iphone each year. and pay peanuts to the labours.

        • Just to let you know, my other half had the same exact issue. Basically her phone would legit drop down some crazy amount in % and then do ok, but essentially there were spikes. The phone was also a year old (6s plus). When she first went to apple they ran the battery check, and said that there wasn't any issues. They couldn't find these spikes as they can only see (IIRC) 24 hours past usage (and this happened while overseas). They did advise if it happens again to come see us ASAP so we can look at those history spikes.

Happened again, so she went back, this time they saw the spikes and looked at apps, and advised of other issues that could cause the battery to stuff up (Netflix, games etc) they said to give it one more shot - and did resets etc, and advised they left notes so if it happens again they will swap it.

Third time it happened, they finally replaced the battery.

They were quite nice throughout the process, so I can't fault them - I had been there when her battery would drop a stupid amount in a matter of a short time - so I understood her frustration with them saying they can't see anything wrong/ apps she's using are draining it - but I also understood, that they can only go by what they see on their screens.

Just be persistent and it should work out (unless you've already moved on)
